High Performance Schools Guidelines SED Priorities  School facilities must be durable- Consider material that will last 30 years or more  School facilities must be easy to maintain- Select materials that are NY – CHPS low maintenance, low chemical use  School facility materials and systems must create an environmentally safe interior environment for students and teachers  School facilities should maximize use of the site’s natural resources and reduce use of off-site energy and water

High Performance Schools Guidelines SED Priorities  High performance renovations can help NY’s older schools to take advantage of the many improvements NY-CHPS facilitates  Building in long-term savings in better NY – CHPS materials and more efficient systems is more important than lowest first cost  NY-CHPS will facilitate a better and higher level of expertise in the design, construction and operation of a new generation of renovated and new healthy and high performance school buildings in New York State

High Performance Schools Guidelines How Much More Will It Cost  National report indicates that High Performance Schools cost 1.5% to 2.5% more NY – CHPS  But High Performance Schools provide financial benefits 10 to 20 times larger  Saving accrue from reduced energy, water and sewer use, reduced equipment maintenance and replacement, reduced building and site maintenance, reduced materials wearing out, reduced sick building liability and reduced sick time losses for students and teachers
