You will have Assessment questions and
vocabulary words to complete in your packet.
Watch for the answers as you go though the
pages and watching the videos. Copy down the
full answer onto your worksheet.
At the end of Interval 1 you will have completed
the following assessment questions, vocabulary
words, and had the instructor sign if needed.
Balloons Interval 1
Look through your packet and familiarize yourself with
these questions…
Assessment Questions:
• Show your instructor your 6 (2 piece) glued panels.
• How far and where did the hot air balloon fly
November 21, 1987?
Vocabulary Words:
• Hydrogen
• Teamwork
Balloons focuses on the achievements of the Montgolfier
brothers and their exploits in Paris, France. They helped create
aviation history by becoming the first to launch hot-air balloons
successfully. Those first flights, more than 200 years ago, set the
stage for later attempts at balloon flights around the world!
In Balloons you will work with your partner to build a hot-air
balloon from tissue paper. Your balloon will be modeled after the
ones built by the Montgolfier brothers.
You will discover that the less-dense hot air inside the balloon
creates lift and allows the balloon to soar. How high and how far
your balloon will fly depends on several variables.
Balloons Interval 1
In Interval 1 you will learn...
• Learn a little about the history of hot-air
balloons.
• Build a hot-air balloon from tissue paper.
• Team with your partner to complete the
Mission successfully.
Balloons Interval 1
Flying High over Paris
More than 200 years ago two French papermakers set out to realize one of mankind’s oldest
dreams.
Joseph and Jacques de Montgolfier believed men could fly. In 1782 they began the work to test
their ideas.
The Montgolfier brothers became interested in the possibility of flight by balloon. Their early
models were constructed from paper and filled with Hydrogen, a gas that is lighter than air. The
hydrogen quickly escaped, but they succeeded in a liftoff.
The first flights were unmanned. Later flights were to raise unlikely passengers of a sheep, a
rooster, and a duck in a wicker cage. Eventually, on November 21, 1783, Pilatre DeRozier and
Marquis D’Arlands became the first men to ascend in a balloon, flying some 100 meters above the
Paris landscape.
The Montgolfiers used teamwork to accomplish their goal. Teamwork is when two or more
individuals combine efforts to reach a common goal
Balloons Interval 1
Balloons Interval 1
Watch the video below that shows information about early ballooning and Joseph &
Jacques de Montgolfier.
You and your partner will begin construction of your
balloon. You will work together to construct one balloon.
We will have a competition at the end of the quarter.
Get your supplies you need for your balloon.
12 pieces of tissue paper
Glue
Scissors
Black Tracing Pattern
Read the information on the next page.
Balloons Interval 1
Balloons Interval 1
Video: Panel Assembly
You and your partner will begin construction of your balloon. You will work together to
construct one balloon.
Ask your instructor to get you the tissue paper.
Click the Button below to launch the video and watch how to construct your panels.
Balloons Interval 1
Balloons Interval 1
You should have 12 sheets of tissue paper. You
are going to glue the twelve sheets into six
balloon panels. Two sheets of tissue paper per
balloon panel.
12 sheets of tissue = 6 balloon panels
Follow the instructions on the next screen.
Balloons Interval 1
Balloons Interval 1
Balloons Interval 1
When you have all the panels arranged neatly, Staple them
together with one staple at each corner.
Locate the Balloon Pattern (A roll of Black Rubber Material) and
lay it on top of your stack of Panels. One partner should hold the
pattern in position, while the other partner carefully traces
around the pattern using a pencil.
Hold the pattern tightly and carefully trace your lines dark
enough so you can see the outline when you remove the
pattern.
Trace around the pattern to have a complete view on your top
panel.
Balloons Interval 1
Now you will carefully cut the balloon panels. Locate the scissors in your supply
drawer and follow the instructions below.
You will follow the outline that you just traced onto the top panel. One partner will
cut while the other helps hold the panels so they do not move around.
Balloons Interval 1
Carefully fold the panels and place them in the
correct storage cabinet / drawer.
Ask your instructor where you are to store your
balloon.
You will need to clean up your module and place
supplies back in the correct storage space.
Using a damp sponge or paper towel, remove
the glue from the tabletop.
Balloons Interval 1
Did you complete your Assessment Questions?
Did you complete your Vocabulary Words?
Did you get your instructor’s signature if needed?
Did you do your Mission Guide?
Balloons Interval 1
Summary
In interval 1 you learned...
• About the beginning of hot air balloon flight.
• About the Montgolfier Brothers and what they
accomplished.
• About building a core panel.
• About how to be a teammate.

  • 22. Balloons focuses on the achievements of the Montgolfier brothers and their exploits in Paris, France. They helped create aviation history by becoming the first to launch hot-air balloons successfully. Those first flights, more than 200 years ago, set the stage for later attempts at balloon flights around the world! In Balloons you will work with your partner to build a hot-air balloon from tissue paper. Your balloon will be modeled after the ones built by the Montgolfier brothers. You will discover that the less-dense hot air inside the balloon creates lift and allows the balloon to soar. How high and how far your balloon will fly depends on several variables. • 24. Flying High over Paris More than 200 years ago two French papermakers set out to realize one of mankind’s oldest dreams. Joseph and Jacques de Montgolfier believed men could fly. In 1782 they began the work to test their ideas. The Montgolfier brothers became interested in the possibility of flight by balloon. Their early models were constructed from paper and filled with Hydrogen, a gas that is lighter than air. The hydrogen quickly escaped, but they succeeded in a liftoff. The first flights were unmanned. Later flights were to raise unlikely passengers of a sheep, a rooster, and a duck in a wicker cage. Eventually, on November 21, 1783, Pilatre DeRozier and Marquis D’Arlands became the first men to ascend in a balloon, flying some 100 meters above the Paris landscape. The Montgolfiers used teamwork to accomplish their goal. Teamwork is when two or more individuals combine efforts to reach a common goal Balloons Interval 1

  • 29. Balloons Interval 1 You should have 12 sheets of tissue paper. You are going to glue the twelve sheets into six balloon panels. Two sheets of tissue paper per balloon panel. 12 sheets of tissue = 6 balloon panels Follow the instructions on the next screen.
  • 32. Balloons Interval 1 When you have all the panels arranged neatly, Staple them together with one staple at each corner. Locate the Balloon Pattern (A roll of Black Rubber Material) and lay it on top of your stack of Panels. One partner should hold the pattern in position, while the other partner carefully traces around the pattern using a pencil. Hold the pattern tightly and carefully trace your lines dark enough so you can see the outline when you remove the pattern. Trace around the pattern to have a complete view on your top panel.
  • 33. Balloons Interval 1 Now you will carefully cut the balloon panels. Locate the scissors in your supply drawer and follow the instructions below. You will follow the outline that you just traced onto the top panel. One partner will cut while the other helps hold the panels so they do not move around.
  • 34. Balloons Interval 1 Carefully fold the panels and place them in the correct storage cabinet / drawer. Ask your instructor where you are to store your balloon. You will need to clean up your module and place supplies back in the correct storage space. Using a damp sponge or paper towel, remove the glue from the tabletop.
