5. 1st Visit
During our first visit, we were guided
by Ms. Inthira for giving us a brief
introduction on the shelter and about
their current situations. We proposed to
her that we are able to design and
construct a furniture to help improve
the living situations of the children.
After further discussion, she stated that
the shelter is currently sourcing for a
suitable dish rack that will be able to
hold a total amount of 40 customised
plates.
However, she was worried about the
quality custom made furniture because
of previous bad experience as the
durability of furniture was not ensured.

1. Shelter’s surrounding is in well-
conditioned.
2. Newly built roof and well-preserved
wall.
3. Lack of furniture to keep things
organized especially for kitchenware
4. No proper dish rack that can hold
the huge number of plates. The current
solution is by stacking all the plates
together to save space however the
plates are not able to drain properly.

During the second visit, we did a
thorough visit in and out of the shelter
to be more clear about the children's
living situation. However, for safety and
privacy reasons, we are not allowed to
take pictures and videos of the shelter.
There are approximately 40 persons in
use of the shelter. Since it is a
complete stand-alone organisation, not
being subsidised by any religious,
government, or charity organisations.
The estimated monthly expenses of the
shelter are RM 6000. It was such a
heavy burden to carry since the current
income is from donations by various
parties and carrying out charity sales.

9. Problems:
1. Ms. Inthira stated that the shelter had experienced a
total of 7 break-ins since their establishment. In order
to prevent further break-in, they would like to install
curtain blinds in the office for more privacy. The
curtain blinds material has to be non-fabric to prevent
catching fire because there are many electronics
equipment in the office.
2. Due to the heavy usage in the kitchen area, there
are mosses grown in the kitchen area. The mosses are
hard to remove and it required a water pressure gun
machine to clean it off completely.
3. Since the plates and dishes are washed in an open
area where volunteers and children will pass by, it will
be safer to install anti slip floor mat to prevent
sliding. The floor mats are preferably easily fixed and
removed for the flexibility of changing area in the
future.

After further considerations on
Agathians’ shelter situations and their
priorities, we decided to drop our
initial ideas of designing and
constructing a furniture for them. This
is to ensure the durability of furniture.
Instead, we listed out a few items that
could help to improve their living
environment. We sourced the items
from different stores and compared
their prices, to make sure the items are
at their best prices with ensured
quality.

12. Within the tight budget of RM960, we
had to decide which items are in more
priorities than other, and had to
eliminate items which were beyond our
expenses. The below four items would
help to solve the major problems in the
shelter :-

13. FUTURE ACTIVITIES
1. Installing & Cleaning
Once proposed item is bought, installation and cleaning activities will be carry
out by our group in Agathian's shelter, also engagement with teenagers from
Agathian's shelter under awareness of PIC will be the best if possible.
- Water pressure gun (floor cleaning and washing)
- Anti-slip mat (install after floor cleaning)
- Roller blind (install in the office)
2. Lunch / Teatime bonding session
If possible, we would like to engage with the PIC and the children's in Agathian's
shelter more by preparing a Lunch or Teatime and eat together or have some mini
games as a wrap for our community service work.
