PROJECT BRIEF

TERRALINK
In a post-disaster situation, people are displaced
from their loved ones. Communication is vital in this environment,
and often the primary methods of cell phones and internet
access are shut down. In order to reunite people and provide
aid, communication must be re-established.
USER PROFILE
Calvin is alone outdoors when a Category 4 typhoon hits the city. He is two
miles away from his family in downtown Manila. Hearing-impaired and not
able to shout for help, Calvin takes cover under a slide in a city playground,
wind and debris battering the environment around him. The boy is frozen with
fear and must find a way to reconnect with his loved ones.

BRAND SELECTION
TERRALINK
Eton manufactures emergency radios for use in outdoor
and post-disaster settings. These rugged devices utilize
battery, solar, and handcrank power sources to allow
for function in almost any situation. Their product form
language was chosen as a reference for the design of
the Terralink. Ruggedization; large corner radii; durable
exposed fasteners and bright, highly visible color details
being a few of the key aesthetic features used.

Investigation of various building interiors was undertaken to
visualize the modernist yet retro ambiance of the Teslahaus.
Inspiration was taken from places such as
Tony Stark’s penthouse from the Iron Man films, the W
Hotel in San Diego, and the Elrod House in Palm Springs.
Envisioned as a pitstop for the Tesla driver on a road
trip, the Embarcadero in San Francisco was chosen
as the primary location for the Teslahaus.

Reading in bars, who does that? One would be
surprised to find out that a lot of reading actually takes place in bars.
The typical literate barfly visits their neighborhood tavern at happy
hour to catch up on the latest best-seller. The act of reading, is of
course, not limited to books. Reading menus, a credit card/ check,
and seeing the face of the person sitting in the bar stool next to you
is not very clear in the poorly-lit environment of a bar.

Exploring the concept of task lighting in bars for reading
necessitated visiting pubs and taverns with mellow atmo-
spheres, versus the raucous environment of a packed
weekend bar. Existing methods of illuminating reading
material were tested to compare reading comfort.
