4. If You Wouldn't Say it to
Someone's Face, Don't Say it Online
Name calling, cursing, expressing deliberately
offensive opinions - if you wouldn't do it to
the face of anyone who might conceivably
see what you write, don't write it.

5. If You Wouldn't Show it in Public,
Don't Share it Online
Naked pictures, drunk pictures, drug-use
pictures, unedited home video - if you would
have a problem with your boss, your parents,
or your kids seeing it now, or at any point in
the future, don't post it online.

6. Don't Exclude Your Audience
If you have a joke to share with one other
person, or a small number of people in a
larger online group, send them a private
message. The same goes for laughing at
texted or emailed jokes when you are in the
presence of others.

Don't forward information sent to you
without checking with the original sender
first.
Don't sign up for newsletters and such using
someone else's email address.

your best friend that it’s not
cool to share mean messages?
Do you ignore it? How would it
feel if someone shared mean

9. Don't Repost Without Checking
the Facts
If you aren't sure of the facts, email it to
someone who does know or can find out or
just do a Google search.

10. Check and Respond to Email
Promptly
If it is going to take longer to reply, email the
sender and tell them that. Don't simply
ignore a question because you don't want to
give the answer.

11. Use Computer Courtesy
Whether a person is sending an email,
chatting in a chat room or speaking in a
forum, it is important to be courteous and
respectful of others online.

12. Use Emoticons
When communicating online, it can be
difficult to gauge a writer's emotion. By using
emoticons, the writer's proper emotion will
be conveyed to the reader.

13. Be Brief Online
It is important to keep messages short,
especially when writing an email or typing in a
chat room.

14. DON’T SHOUT
No matter what forum, writing in all capital
letters is considered SHOUTING and is
considered very rude. A word or two in caps
is fine, but shouting is not recommended.

15. Pay Attention to Language Issues
Improper, inappropriate or bad language may
get a participant kicked out or permanently
banned from a forum or group.

It is important to note, what is posted online
today, may come back and haunt the writer
tomorrow.

17. Keep Personal Information Private
Identity theft is a rapidly growing concern.
Divulging too much information could give
predators and those with bad intentions
valuable information.
Be careful where personal information is
posted.

18. Obey Copyright Laws
Obey copyright laws. Use proper referencing
and check the licensing on resources you find.
Always credit the creator.

19. Help Internet Newbies
Be patient and helpful with others.
Remember, everyone was a newbie once.

20. Be Aware of Cyberbullying
Cyberbullying is increasing rapidly. If targeted
by a cyberbully, do not respond. Keep all
ORIGINAL correspondence, with dates and
times if possible.
If the messages are of a threatening nature or
safety is a concern, contact the police as soon
as possible.
