The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted agriculture on the African continent. Lockdowns have disrupted farmers' regular routines and reduced crop quality. Africa exports over $10 billion in agricultural commodities annually, but the virus spread is expected to lower earnings. Farmers are asking governments for support as the uncertain economic conditions add pressure to African economies already suffering from drought before the pandemic struck.

1. Impact on agriculture
 The outbreak of COVID-19 has created a huge impact on the agricultural sector of every country
under lockdown. It hinders the regular routine of farmers, reducing the quality of crops that have
already been planted.
 As a farmers’ organization, Agri SA has contingency plans in place and advises its producers
regularly on workplace hygiene and what to do when you suspect a co-worker has the virus.
 The African agricultural sector exports approximately 25 commodities amounting to a value of
more than $10 billion annually. The spread of the virus is sure to reduce earnings.
 The current uncertainty of the markets and the subsequent global economic slowdown is adding
pressure to the debilitating African economy.
 Farmers are now clamoring for government support.
 The continent was already suffering because of serious droughts even before COVID-19, so the
pandemic has struck at the worst possible time.
Solution
 Our app intends to provide all information that a farmer could use to make smart decisions about
his/her/their crops.
 It will provide satellite data to the farmers so they can see general indicators of the health of their
crops and whether they are planting in ideal locations.
 This will be done by providing NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index), UVI
(Ultraviolet Index), LST (Land Surface Temperature), EVI (Enhanced Vegetation Index), and soil
grade, mapped to the plot of land owned by the farmer. They will be asked to mark this when
using the app for the first time.
 The app will also provide information on weather conditions and forecasts.
 The app will provide recommendations on the suitability of certain crops to the plot of land. The
idea for this feature came from on an Indonesian study on the suitability of land in Serang for
cassava growth on the basis of satellite data.
 Our app focuses on changes in local environmental conditions that might affect agriculture such
as a sudden increase in temperature.
 The app can easily be installed and used on GPS-enabled smart phones making it rather easy for
the farmers to access the information in it.
