3. OUR MISSION
Ignitia’s mission is to empower intelligent decision
making by providing custom, highly accurate weather
forecasting data to customers in emerging markets -
allowing them to stabilize operations, mitigate risks,
and maximise profits.

4. THE PROBLEM
40% of the world’s population lives in the tropics, the
majority of whose livelihoods are dependent on rainfed
agriculture. The yields of small-scale farmers in Sub-
Saharan Africa are the lowest in the world, negatively
impacting livelihoods, nutrition and food security, and
broader economic growth.
Contrary to public belief, the tropics have never had
reliable weather forecasts. The understanding of how
tropical weather patterns should be simulated in a
forecasting model has been lacking, resulting in very poor
results of forecasting accuracy in West Africa
Other methods of receiving forecasts from outside sources
such as radio or newspapers have been historically
unreliable, and farmers no longer trust them to make
decisions based on their predictions.
96% of all agriculture in tropics
uses rain as the only source of
water. All actions on a farm are
rain-dependent.
20-80% of yields loss due to
weather.**
More than one billion small scale
farmers are affected.
40% of the world’s population
lives in the tropics. In 2025, it will
account for 55% of world’s
population.

5. THE SOLUTION: iska™
Ignitia has developed iska™, a highly accurate, localized
weather forecast delivered via SMS in partnership with
major telecommunications firms. Forecasts are delivered
daily, monthly, and seasonally to farmers’ phones. Each
message is tailor-made to the farm location using GPS and
delivered to any basic mobile phone via SMS.
The daily message includes a 48hr forecast that details
the likelihood, timing, and intensity of rainfall. Monthly and
seasonal outlooks are sent at the beginning of each month.
Our messages are always simple and clear. In partnership
with local communities, we developed a simple text-based
48hr weather forecast message that most illiterate farmers
can understand by recognizing keywords. User-testing
results have shown that keywords, rather than icons, are
more easily understood by farmers. 4

OUR
FORECASTING MODEL
Data gathering: Ignitia relies on satellites and remote data to source our information. This allows us to predict
the weather without the need for expensive infrastructure on the ground in traditionally remote areas, while
giving us the flexibility to quickly expand to new geographical areas and markets.
Computing: Ignitia’s high-resolution tropical forecast model runs on its own supercomputer cluster
underground in Stockholm, Sweden with a weather research and forecasting model (WRF) that has a high
degree of geographical specificity.
Distribution: After the forecasts are run through the computer models, a short, simple, and easy-to-read 48-
hour forecast text update is generated based on the farmer’s GPS location and sent to their mobile phones via
SMS.

12. CORE CHALLENGES
• Our service has to be
understandable by
subscribers with low
literate capabilities.
• Keeping our messages
as clear and simple as
possible is crucial.
LANGUAGE
• Cultural differences in
Ghana, Mali and Nigeria
must be respected.
• Individual marketing and
training approaches are
necessary in each
market.
CULTURE SEASONALITY
• Seasonality sales of
forecast are the most
relevant during the
rainy season in West
Africa.

WEATHER INDUSTRIES
• Government-owned institutions
in tropical countries.
• Technology is outdated by 60+
years
• Lack the knowledge to improve
weather forecasting capabilities
• Use sparse ground observation
data collected in-country
• Media companies that repackage
global model forecasts to suit
consumer needs
• Main revenue source:

• Add meteorological analysis to
global models, but don’t do
forecast modeling themselves.
• Three global models (ECMWF, GFS
and UK MET) are the basis for most
forecasts seen over the world.
• They have the mandate to improve
forecasts for the countries that fund
them, such as EU or US. No/little
interest in the tropics.

TESTIMONIALS
“When I was growing up, the rains would come at
specific times. Now we can’t tell when it’s rainy
season because it rains so little and it’s so
unpredictable. Now I enjoy a bountiful harvest
because I know when to fertilize, plant and harvest.”
Araba
Eastern Region, Ghana
“When I subscribed to iska and started receiving the
updates on rainfall patterns, I knew that if iska says there
will be rainfall, then I plant crops that need more rainfall. I
have been able to follow the forecast and successfully
determine the best crop for that period of time for more
yields. This is exactly what I do. ”
