conventions
Masthead – the title block for the magazine
Menu – the list of contents inside the magazine
Pugs – the sticker which can be seen in almost every magazine and is used for promoting
something inside the magazine
Secondary lead – a preview of an inside article or story
Sidebar – an additional box next to the main feature of the magazine
Splash – a main story of the front page, which is accompanied with a headline or a
photograph
Spread – a story that covers more than one page
Stand first – a sentence after a headline and before an article begins that 'sells' a feature to a
reader
Strapline – a subheading below the initial headline
Tag – the use of a word or a phrase to engage the reader's interest (e.g. sensational, new,
exclusive)

Box out – a coloured box behind some text, to make the text stand out
Cover line – text that tells us the stories that are in the magazine.
By-line – name of the reporter
Caption – text underneath an image explaining it
Credits – in the form of a beeline the author is credited, photographs
may have the photographers name underneath
Crosshead –a subheading that show in the body of the body the text
and is centered above the column of text
Headline – the main statement, describing the main story
