From the high seas, via nautical cartographer, Information
Manager to Fleet Safety Officer. From a hands-on environment to
governmental and non-profit organisations currently employed
with an international commercial company.
Working independently and in a team were the first things learnt
being a deck hand. Working on vessels with small crew taught to
work with hands and head and assisted in forming the problem
solver.
Once ashore a cartographic career at the Hydrographic Office
started. Spatial visualization ability was developed and formed
visually oriented skills. Working with a lot of information was only
possible by learning to work in an organized and structured way.
The interest was born for information management and the
Information Management (evening) studies commenced.
The finalised studies brought new career opportunities. The
Netherlands Shipping Inspectorate was the new place of work.
Focus was on organising the large amount of information required
for international meetings as IMO* and EU. Current and new
legislation had to be stored in a structured way. The information
managerial skills were thus taken to a higher level. Another aspect
of the job was to manage young inexperienced staff, who were
hired to fill the rules and regulations database.
Participated in an international project, initiated by the EMSA**, to
develop a database (RuleCheck) of relevant documents published
by IMO, ILO and port state control to support PSC Officers
activities. Self-assertiveness, decisiveness and learning to speak
skills were honed. The knowledge for building websites and HTML
were developed.
Columbia Shipmanagement Lt. in Cyprus was the next step.
Knowledge of management systems, ISO 9001 and 14001,
Quality Assurance, Risk Assessments and Incident Investigation
were gained. Part of the job was designing and publishing a
magazine in regards to safety, environmental and quality topics.
A new role and challenge was assigned: to improve the
coordination of ISM / ISO audits of the fleet. In this context tools
were developed and the way of working improved and structured.
Managed four experienced ex-Captains (Auditors) from different
nationalities and cultures. Reduced the average overdue vessels
from 6 to 1. Monitored follow-up of Audit Non-Conformities.
Current responsibilities are following up on incidents on the fleet
and Incident Investigation. Developed a new incident database
and monitoring tool. Set up a new structure for incident
categorisation. Prepare, evaluate and present Incident statistics.
