Problem Statement: A caring, informed, highly-educated, vigilent, honors professor needs to enhance
her promotion of non-academic experiences to students because they do not understand the value of
those experiences for gainful employment.
My three selected ideas
I. The most practical idea: Make applying for internships part of the class curriculum. Students
would be required to seek out a few employers, contact them regarding internships, and
submit applications. Accepting the internships, however, would be voluntary.
II. The most disruptive idea: Have the government pass a law mandating an internship for
college graduation. Anyone accepted into college would have to apply for and secure an
internship after the freshman year but prior to being awarded a degree. Those unable to
secure an internship could apply for extensions for up to three years after their classes
ended.
III. My favorite idea: Have a “50 internships in 50 days competition” between different schools
or departments. For large schools, the competition would be between departments.
Smaller, liberal arts institutions and community colleges could have the competition
between regional schools. The department or school whose students have secured the most
internships after a 50 day period would win some form of remuneration.
The initial ideas
1. Talk to them during lecture
2. Talk to them in the hallway
3. Organize a student-teacher seminar
4. Get employers to come to the classroom
5. Get the students to contact employers
6. Take the class on field trips to employers
7. Put up a sign in the quad
8. Talk to other faculty members to encourage them to ask students about internships
9. Organize a national meeting for students to attend
10. Take the students to other countries to meet international employers
11. Invite international employers to meet with the students
12. Encourage students to solve problems on their own to present to employers
13. Present a play for students to role-play as students and employers
14. Invite people who held internships before getting jobs to talk to students
15. Encourage students to seek out people who held internships and interview them
16. Drive around in a van with a loudspeaker encouraging students to do internships
17. Use sidewalk chalk to write messages on the sidewalk to encourage students to do internships
18. Hold a local internship day on campus
19. Do an internship fair
20. Give extra credit for applying for internships
21. Make applying for internships part of the class curriculum
22. Perform a song and dance routine promoting internships
23. Write “Get an internship” on all the students desks
24. Start each lecture with “Have you applied for an internship today?”
25. Have students encourage other to apply for internships
26. Have an in-class debate on the value of internships
27. Have “Internship” printed on your coffee cup
28. Have the government pass a law mandating an internship for college graduation
29. Lobby state and local representatives to promote internships through legislation
30. Have a plane sky-write “Internship” above campus
31. Put “Internship” on the Goodyear blimp
32. Provide “Internship” toilet paper for all the dormitories
33. Place propaganda speakers all over campus broadcasting the benefits of internships
34. Tattoo “internship” on your forehead
35. Have a moment of silence during class every day for “Internship”
36. Write “Internship” on the blackboard 1000 times
37. Create an pass/fail internship class, whose goal is obtaining an internship
38. Have a bake sale with “Internship” cookies
39. Shave “internship” into the fur of all campus squirrels
40. Plant an internship garden
41. Put “internship” art around the classroom
42. Put “internship” art around campus
43. Run a TV spot touting internships
44. Run a radio spot touting internships
45. Have internship day in the cafeteria, where culinary students make the food
46. Put together a faculty band and make an Internship CD
47. Sell “internship” memorabilia at the campus bookstore
48. Give away T-shirts that say “I did an internship” for those who complete one
49. Release 4900 helium balloons into the sky with “internship written on them
