The DIY Guide to Remote Filming
We all take videos on our phones. But we’re not usually focused on technique when we do.
Here is our starter guide to getting the best quality footage on your phone.
Minimum Requirements
• 1 person (2 people is ideal)
• A smartphone
3 Most Imporant Categories
• Lighting
• Sound
• Frame
Most Common Mistakes
• Camera is angle too low
• Subject is backlit
• Subject is not in focus
• Forgetting to hit record

Category I: Lighting
Good lighting makes all the difference. Check out these tips:
• Indirect daylight is best.
• Place yourself near a widow but not in direct sunlight.
• Ideally, the light is at a 45 degree angle from
the camera (this is called hitting the far side key).
• If you are able to be near daylight, you will
want to turn off artificial lighting. Natural
and artificial lighting don’t mix.

Category II: Sound
The mics on our phones can pick up unwanted
sound. Try the following:
• Choose a quiet environment.
• Avoid frequently overlooked sounds like ticking
clocks, planes overhead, air conditioning, etc.
• Speak up!

Category III: Frame
Grab a buddy and have some fun with framing.
It’s great to have a second set of eyes and hands
around to help with small adjustments.
• Film from eye level, not at an angle.
• Place your phone on a stable surface or tripod.
• Keep the phone within 3 feet of you, and make
sure that you are fully in frame.
• Keep 6-10 feet behind you. Don’t film yourself
directly against a wall.
