2. FOREVER HAYES
On October 21st, Cardinal Hayes High School celebrated its 75th Anniversary
at The Plaza Hotel in New York City. We honored notable alumni who
continue to uphold our rich tradition of brotherhood and service. The
centerpiece to the evening was the announcement of an effort critical to the
future success of Cardinal Hayes High School – the Forever Hayes
Campaign.
This comprehensive campaign was launched to make certain the permanence,
prosperity and excellence that has come to define Cardinal Hayes for the past 75
years. Even more incredible is that through the generosity of only a small number
of Hayesmen and friends, more than $10 million has already been committed to
this cause. Please join us to ensure the viability of Cardinal Hayes High School for
the next 75 years and beyond.

4. that we try to instill in all of
our Hayesmen: A love for
learning, a desire to serve

BRIGHT SPIRIT
When Christian Martinez stepped
onto the stage of the Grand
Ballroom at the Mayflower Hotel in
Washington, D.C. it was a defining
moment in his life. As the winner of
The National Catholic Education
Association (*NCEA) Seton Award,
this night was a crowning
achievement to a promising future.
After four years at Hayes, Martinez
is a rising star among his peers. He
is a member of the Student Activities
Committee (SAC), a National
Honors Society inductee and a
permanent fixture at many other
award ceremonies.

5. “As men of Hayes, we are
exposed to a world of
cardinals, where every day
there is a new challenge, a
new threat, a new pain to
endure. And when you
face these cardinals, you
take on the fight and you
overcome, keep pushing,
keep going forward until
your cardinal becomes
your gold.” - Hayesman
Ezekiel Ayala-Santos.
STRIVE FOR
EXCELLENCE
Student Body President and First
Honors recipient Ezekiel Ayala-
Santos gave an impassioned speech
at the 2016 Fall Honors
Convocation. At first, Ayala-Santos
did not understand the impact of
being a Hayesmen. It was at his
father’s funeral when he witnessed
true brotherhood and
friendship. The Hayes community
gathered to give him support in his
darkest hour. This was the turning
point for him.
8. Louisiana Rapper Dee-1 is known for his energetic performances to sold-out
crowds. His lyrical skills have been widely admired, but it is his aptitude for
money management that is garnering attention from corporate America and
educators. In his quest to help students become fiscally responsible, he
partnered with accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) to spread the
message. The former middle school teacher spoke to Cardinal Hayes seniors
about the importance of money management skills. “I taught in mostly African-
American and Hispanic communities. No one was feeding these kids financial
literacy. The way we spent our money was erroneous. My financial literacy
came from trial and error. PwC saw the “Sallie Mae Back” video on You
Tube. They saw that I was passionate about financial literacy. It was synergy
after that.”
For the past several years, PwC has been a strong institutional partner with
Cardinal Hayes High School. Jeremy Philips, PwC Partner and his associates
have been instrumental in supporting key educational initiatives such as the
Earn Your Future™ Curriculum to promote strong monetary skills among
young people.
During his presentation, Dee-1 shared some of the financial pitfalls he
experienced during his college days at Louisiana State University. His hit single
“Sallie Mae Back” chronicles his arduous journey from being thousands of
dollars in debt with student loans to financial independence. Now, his thrifty
spending habits have led to a debt-free lifestyle. The rapper emphasized the
importance of choosing a career that will prove to be financially and
intellectually fulfilling. “The average college student graduates with $37,000 in
loans. Be smart about your money. At the end of the day you want to be
responsible and manage your money effectively.”
Seniors Julius Boateng and Alex Batista are taking his message to
heart. Boateng found Dee-1’s presentation very insightful. “Dee-1’s advice was
extremely helpful. It taught us not to waste money on frivolous stuff. His
message works hand in hand with my economics class. I would like to start
implementing these ideas very soon.
9. Seventeen-year-old Batista believes the rapper’s words of wisdom will help as he
goes off to college. “His advice gave us a guide for the future. When I get to
college, I will most likely take out loans to pay for my education. I will be very
careful about how I use my loans. I don’t need to focus on getting the flashy
things. It is more important to create a strong financial future.”
