1. Columbia County Board of Education BYOD/BYOT Policy
2. Platform – Apple Devices
I chose to utilize the Apple platform for my PE classes because majority of the
students within my classes have some type of Apple device (iPhone, iPad, iPod, etc.).
Another reason for my selection is the wide range of health, fitness, and video apps
that are designed for Apple devices. These apps would allow me to incorporate a
range of activities within my class that incorporated the use of technology.
3. Student Accommodations
For those students who do not have their own devices, my school has purchased a
number of iPads that could be utilized during various activities that require the use of
BYOD/BYOT. I would also design lessons that would allow pairs or groups of
students to utilize one device instead of each individual student needing their own. In
the long run, I would look at writing grants that would help my school to acquire
more iPads or Apple devices to utilize within the classroom.
4. Student Groups
Depending on the activity (keeping track of pulse during physical activity, recording
the number of steps, performing exercises viewed on their iPads, creating an exercise
routine video, etc.), the groups would range from individuals to groups of 2-4
students.
2. 5. Apps
iWorkout Muse – Students can utilize music from their playlists and create
custom interval times for use during interval workouts.
Runkeeper – GPS Running, Walk, Cycling, Workout, Pace and Weight Tracker
– Students can utilize this app to keep track of their fitness activity (similar to the
wrist band technology ex: Fitbit) through their phones/ipods.
iFitness – Students are provided images of over 300 exercises being performed.
Students can click on a region of the body and exercises are brought up for that
targeted area. This app also includes videos for those exercises that students are
having a hard time understanding. This app can be used by students to develop
their own workout/exercise routine.
Hudltechnique – This app allows students to video themselves or classmates
performing various skills during a unit (hitting a baseball or shooting a basketball)
and then to go back and analyze the results. It also allows the students/teachers to
import videos that could be used as teaching aids/examples. This is a great way to
help students learn the correct techniques and to develop the skill of self-
assessment.
Skype – This app would allow the teacher to bring in experts on a particular
subject (tennis, badminton, etc.) and have them video conference with the
students/groups, explaining in detail about the sport and answering any questions
they may have.
iMovie – This app would allow individual or groups of students to create videos
about the various concepts they have learned about. It is easy to import videos
and photos along with allowing the students to edit them on their devices.
TempoPerfect – This app simulates a metronome and allows the teacher to
visually and audibly simulate various heart rates to help students understand the
differences between resting heart rate, target heart rate, etc.
