Christopher marlowe
Born :-26 February 1564
Died :- 30 May 1593
● He is one of the most suggestive
figure of the English Renaissance.
● He was English poet , playwright
and translator.
● His great works :
(1)Tamburlain the great
(2)Doctor faustus
(3)Edward II
Major themes of Dr faustus
● Pride : Hubris
● Quest for knowledge
● Power as a corrupting influence
● Salvation , Mercy and redemption
Pride : Hubris
● The pride is mejor theme of doctor faustus . Pride which
goes before a fall .
● Pride is one of the seven deadly sins , arguable that one
that leads to all the other . Within the Christian
framework , pride is a lethal motivation because it make
the sinner forget his fallen state.
● “”Faustus's” first great sin is pride. He does not stop here
. Reflecting the Christian view pride gives rise to all of
the other sin and ironically with the proud man's
abasement.
● His pride is the source of the his damnation .
Quest for knowledge
● Central theme of the play .
● He examines all the orthodox branches of all
knowledge and find them wanting .
● He chooses magic , for its promises “a world of
profit and delight , / of power , of owner , of
omnipotent ’’.
● For four- twenty years he seek experience of all
kind . However , finaly , his knowledge bring him
despair instead of freedom .
Power as a corrupting influence
● Early in the play , before he agrees to the pact with
Lucifer , Faustus is a full of idea for how to use the
power that he sick , but he also aspires to plumb
mysteries of the universe and to remark the map of
Europe.
● Though they may not be entirely admirable , thair plans
are ambitious and inspire away , if not sympathy . They
land grandeur to Faustus's scheme and make his quest
for personal power .
Salvation , Marcy and
Redemption
● Hell is internal , but so is heaven .
● For a Christian , all that is necessary to be saved from eternal
damnation is acceptance of Jesus Christ’s grace. Even after
singing away his soul to the devil Faustus has the option of
repentance that will save him from hell .
● but once he has committed himself to his own damnation ,
Faustus seems unable to change his please a course .
● While Christianity seems to accept even of deathbed
repentance is acceptable for the attainment of salvation ,
Marlowe play with the idea , possibly rejecting it for his own
thematic purposes.
Symbols of doctor faustus
● Blood
● The good Angel and the bad Angel
Blood
∆ Blood plays multiple symbolic role in the play.
∆ when faustus sing away is a soul , he sings in a blood ,
symbolizing the permanent and supernatural nature of this
pact .
∆ His blood Congeals on the page , however , symbolizing ,
perhaps his own body's revolt against what he intends to do .
∆ meanwhile , Christ’s blood , which Faustus says he is
running across the sky during his terrible last night ,
symbolizes the sacrifice their Jesus according to Christian
belief , made on the cross ; is sacrifice opened the ways for
humankind to repent its sin and be served.
The good Angel and the bed Angel
● The Angel appeared at fosters’s shoulder on in the play
● The good Angel urging him to repent and serve God .
● The evil Angel urging him to follow his a lust for power and serve
Lucifer .
● The two symbolise is a divided will , part of which wants to do
good and part of which is a sunk in sin .
● For example :
Good Angel urges faustus to “ think of heaven and heavenly
things”
While bad Angel encounter with “ think horror and wealth “
