IT’S AN OPEN SOURCE WORLD
• 78% of respondents* said their companies run part or all of its
operations on OSS and 66% said their company creates software
for customers built on open source. 93% said their organization’s
use of open source increased or remained the same in the past
year.
• 64% of companies currently participate in open source projects –
up from 50% in 2014– and over the next 2-3 years, 88% are
expected to increase contributions to open source projects.
• Open source has become the default approach for software with
more than 66% of respondents saying they consider OSS before
other options.

• Open Source SDN will succeed if we bear the work without striving to own
it only for ourselves.
• Open Source SDN will succeed if we act together and not lay claim
individually.
• Open Source SDN will succeed if we do the work together and let go of
our ego.
• When we let our ego subside, our work will endure.

ONF OPEN SOURCE SDN SOFTWARE PROJECTS
ONF Atrium represents a
set of open source,
software distributions
designed to enable Open
SDN applications. Atrium
aims to simplify and
accelerate open SDN
adoption by making it easy
to build applications in a
multi-vendor environment.

• ATRIUM 2016/A: Incorporation of
OpenDaylight into the Atrium router. The
router in this release is built on the
OpenDaylight framework and controls
OpenFlow® hardware switches using
Quagga’s open-source implementation of
the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP), a
control plane protocol for Internet routing.

iSDX (Software-Defined IXP) Software
brings the merits of SDN to interdomain
routing. Today’s networks can only forward
traffic based on the destination IP prefixes
and routes offered by their immediate
neighbors. SDN can give direct control
over packet-processing rules that match on
multiple header fields and perform a variety
of actions.

Project CASTOR is a controller-based architecture for interconnections in data centers,
specifically targeting two market segments:
(a) Public peering between domains at an Internet Exchange Point (IXP)
(b) Private peering between enterprises and cloud service providers
Timeline
• 2016 Q1: Development of various components, including CASTOR application on ONOS that
can establish basic L3 peering and L2 connectivity, web-interface to manage connectivity.
• 2016 Q2: Demonstration on a simple set-up of one switch and four peers exchanging traffic;
showing that hygiene is maintained and ARP storms are blocked.
• 2016 Q3: Enhancement of the user-interface, including support for VLAN-tagged frames.
• 2016 Q4: [tentative] Support for visualization of telemetry and rate-limiting of interconnect traffic.
