T A l A N
.wi t h o u t t oi ,
If you read an ItaIian text without having studied the
language you will understand a certain amount. The
words of Latin derivatioli in your own Ianguage will be
easiIy recognisable in Italian, and you will lind this a
great help. Your understanding of ltalian will
progressively increase, aImost without effort• . and with a
minimum of attentÌon to grammar. It is rather à
question cf use cr habit than cf study.
Gel intc the habit of doing a quarter Df an
hour of Italian daily. The task is easy; you have only
to read each lesson, referring to the pronunciation, the
EngIish text, anci the notes.
Then take each sentence separately, readìng it aIDuci;
then repeat it aloud without looking at the text.
It is nct a questicn cf learning by heart,
but simply cf repeating the few wcrds ylOu
have just read, ccncentrating ycur aUention
on the sense, and only looking at the· English text
when absolutely necessary. In this way you will traÌn
yourself Ìnto thinking direct in Italian without translation.
;vou wiU graduic'tg'y assimilate the Ianguage.
Revise past· Iessons frequently, always in. the
same way. This intuitive assimiIatÌon will last
over about fifty lessons; then, thus tramed you will be
ready to tackle the active phase, progressìvely and
without efforl:. and finally arrive at the practìcal
knowledge of everyday Italian. (See lesson 49).
On the basis of one lesson daily, you wrnneed about
ne months to attain this result. In the event of urgency,
kam two Iessons daily, studying, for mstance, a quarter

of an hour moming and evemng, revlSlng as well during
your spare time.
lE you bave.the records, tapea or cassettes,
listening lo thc: conversations, 00 topical subjecls, inler
preted in a living and atlractive way by eclucated Italian
speakers simply becomes an agreeable pastime. You now
have Italy at your doorstep; with· this advantage,
thal wcre you lo make a stay in Italy. you would have
lo wrestle with ali the difllculties of the Ianguage al thc:
same time. whereas with .. Àssimil .. you tackle them
one aher another, laking Ihem in the easies! way, with
the advantage of listening lo a perfect pronunciation in the
meantime.
This is why we asseri that .. Italian
without toil, .. with the recording ilio allo good
allo a stay of several months in Italy. Once your
course is finished you are assured of ullderstallding and
of being understood..
The records each represellt six lessons, and are
enlivened by Italiall popular songs. The handbook
contains many humorous sketches.
The pronunciation of Italian closely follows the
spelling. and once you have mastered a few simple rules
you should not find it difficult. Remember that with
very few exceptions, ali letters are clearly sounded' nd
vowel sounds. whether accented or not, should never be
slurred.
The accent most often falls on the last
ayllable but one, but there are many exceptions lo
this rule which you wil! learn wilh practice. The only
written accenl in Italian is the grave accenl C), which
is used in words having the stress on the last syllable:
così, Ihus; carità. charify. Throughout the book the
accenled syllable of every word is printed in heavy
type. so that if you watch carefully, you should have
no difficulty 011 this point.
Some rules to help you with pronunciation are given in
lesson 7.
,
4. VII
THE TWO "WAVES"
uaming the language in two U waves " (Passive
and Active stages) i5.oDe of the most attractive features
of U Italian without toil. " It bringa you quickly
to the poin! where you can enjoy Italian even though
you do not understand ali ila grammatica! subùeties.
The first "wave " (passive stage) is intended lo
take you through the whole course al a lively pace. As
soon al you caD understand and repeat a lesson, you
should move OD lo the nex! one. In Ihis way you will
avoid tbe dullness of what used lo be termed "the
grammar grind." Ahwrb as far as possible with your
ear rather than your mind; you can, if you like. think
of the way in which a baby understands what il i$ lold
long before il lcarru; the niceties af written and spoken
language.
The second .. wave " (active stage) begins about
a third of the way through the fint " wave .
.
(lesson 50).
This is the proper lime for you to go back lO lesson l
and start lo Ihink about the language '3nd iu grammatièal
conslructions. and you will find thal you will leam ali
Ihe more easily far having postponed your more formai
attack upon it.
Do not let the second "wave" prevenl you from
keeping up a good pace with the Test of
the first "wave." Go on to the end of the
book at your originai pace, but t the same lime
link each new lesson with an old one studied in mOTe
detail. Thus the simple comprehensioD of lessori 50
should be linked with a new and analytical approach lo
lesson l; lesson 51 will be linked with lesson 2 and
50 on.
In the phonetic transcTiptions. the siressed syllables
are shawn in bold type.

A NOTE ON
THE ASSIMIL RECORDS, TAPES
AND CASSETTES
These recordings will bring you, in your own
home, the voices of Italian actors and actresses whose
pronunciation is the standard one; you can Iisten to them
over and over again.
If you devote, say, a quarter of an hour (or even two
periods of ten minutes) daily to Iearning by the
" Assimil " method, you wiII achieve your object.
Listen carefuIIy to the records, repeat with the utmost
care what you have heard and you may rest assured
that once you go to Italy or meet Italian-speaking people
you wiII, from the very outset, make your meaning cIear.

REVISION AND NOTES
1. The pronunciation of ltalian is not difficuIt
provided that certain simple rules are borne in mind.
The main difference between English and ltalian is that
in ItaIian the unstressed vowels keep their pure sound,
and should not be slurred as often happens in English.
There are seven different vowel sounds which are
pronounced approximately as follows :
a as a m rather
e(close) » a » made
e(open} » e » met
i » ee » see
o(close) » o » pale
o(open) » o » not
U » 00 » soon.
20. quindici (kwindeechcee) 15
- 5 - Dan't mention it (I pray) if
you (of them) would like another now... - 6 - Thanks 1
don't wish to abuse... - '7 - Not at alI. Here is a humour
ous novel which will amuse you. - 8 - Don't let's speak of
it further. Au revoir. - 9 - Au revoir, and thanks once
more.
NOTES: (2) Nola Benel Ne, in ltalian has nothing lo do
with the negative, but means, some, any. of it, of them. - Se ne
vuole: if (you) want any. - Se non né vuole: if (you) do noi
want any.
1- I am pleased. - 2 You are sad. - 3 - We are at the
concerto - 4 - I have nothing far you. - 5 - Have yo'u
seen this book? - 6 - We have stilI the time. - 7 - J

Italian? - 13 - You will speak Italian. - 14 - Will you
speak Italian? - 15 - One (he, she, it) must work -
16 - One (he, she, it) will have to leave. - 17 - What
is there? What is the matter? -, 18 - There is nothing
the ma,tter.
As may be seen in senlences Il, 12, 13 and 14, lha inter
rogative is only indica/ed in the lJJriUen language by the query
mark, and by the in/onation when speaking.
The mouth should be we!! opened when pronouncing
the open vowe1 sounds. Care should be taken to keep
the vowe1 sounds pure. In English there Is a tendency
to combine two sounds, as for instance, the shght i ound
after the "a" in words like "day", "late"'. This musi
be avoided in Italian.
In the pronunciation given throughout the booi<. -.ve
indicate the close e sound by ay and the open e by eh;
the close o by oh and the open o simply by o, with very

Front now on, in every seventh lesson, we shall replace
the exercise by a snatch of a popular song. We are beginning
by a simple child'. song :
Mamma. - 14 Mamma, I am so happy, because I am
coming back to you. - 15 My song tells thee-that it is
the loveliest day for me ! - 16 Mamma I am so happy I

and o occur in unstressed syllables of words of more
than one syIlable they are always dose, i.e. pronounced
respectiveley like the English a in made and o in pole.
Remember that a, i and u are pronounced respectively
like a in father, ee in keen, and 00 in moon. Unstressed
i and u coming before another vowel sound almast like
an English y and w respectively; i.e. ieri (yehri) .
yesterday; uomo (womoh) , mano
After c and g an unaccented i is inserted to keep the
50ft sound, i.e. fanciullo (fanchuIIoh) , child; ragione
(rajiohnay) , reason.
Gli. - We have already met this sound in words
like meglio (mehlyoh) and voglio (volyoh) . When gli
is alone or comes at the end of a word the i retains
its " ee " sovnd, i.e. il figlio (filyoh) , the san; i figli
