A typical remote telecom tower site has operations expenditure to power
active and passive assets on the remote cell tower site. The active assets
include the base transceiver station that consumes 1KW to 8.5 KW where 80%
of these configuration has power demand of less than 3.5 KW.
INTRODUCTION
Telecom Towers are key ingredients in ensuring the success of Telecom
Operators’ quality of service and is an important determinant of the Tower
Company’s success. Efficient management of these towers has a direct impact
on the operators’ service and also significantly contributes to factors attracting
new tenants. Since these towers are in thousands and are spread over a
geography, many in remote areas, efficient management of these towers is a
challenge. Leveraging remote monitoring technology to manage these towers
has been found to be a significant challenge to the worldwide operators.
The ability of having multiple tenants helps telecom operators to share passive
infrastructure operation costs. The passive infrastructure includes the battery
banks to supply backup power, the air conditioners to keep the shelter cool for
the electronic equipment’s and power interface unit.
The grid availability has a great influence on the operations and
maintenance costs of telecom towers. The sites located in areas of
lower grid availability (power supply of 8 hours or less) have higher
fuel costs due to extensive use of the diesel generators.
