What Makes a Thing Living”Biology is the many-faceted study of.docx

1. Our planet Earth is inhabited by
so many different kinds of living
organisms. Some living organisms are
so small that hardly we can see them,
whereas others are quite large. But,
have you ever noticed why some living
things look different from others? For
example, a plant is very different from a
cat. Similarly, a human being is not the
same as a fish. This is because there is
diversity among the living things. We
can study different kinds of animals
easily, if we group them on the basis of
their similarities or differences.

Five kingdoms of living things
There are many types of living things on our planet Earth. These living
things are also called as organisms. Scientists have estimated that there are
about 10 to 100 million different kinds of organisms on the Earth, out of
which, only 2 million organisms have been discovered and studied so far.
With every passing day, many new organisms are being discovered. With
this growing diversity in organisms, it will become difficult for us to study
them. Therefore, scientists classify organisms based on their similarities or
differences. Classification means grouping things according to similarities
and differences. It helps us to study things in an organized manner.
Apart from the plants and animals, what organisms
can you see in the above picture? Circle them.
There are some organisms which cannot be seen with naked eye, such
organisms are called microorganisms. Sometimes, you fall ill due to
infection, this infection is caused by microorganisms. These microorganisms

We know how plants and animals are different from one another. But, can
you tell how fungi and bacteria are different from one another. Find out the
answer and hold a class discussion on the same.
