Purpose
To gain a better understanding of how to apply
effective make up and foley to our OTS. We will use
technique research to aid us. By doing this, the mise-
en-scene and sound effects of the characters will
become more realistic and believable towards the
audience. This goes towards our planning for our
horror OTS.
Here are some examples that I
chose…
Zombie make up
 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CtNYaXAGuyY (zombie make
up effects)
 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JMZ994SQeLE (zombie bite
mark)
 We could apply this to our zombie OTS which would make the
zombies’ mise-en-scene look more realistic in terms of make up.
 This can make the zombie look more grotesque. For example,
making the zombies’ skin peel, or give them huge infected pusses.
 We can show zombie bite marks on the humans as well, to show
their infection. This shows show the violent extent of zombies, and
can make our horror OTS look more scary for the audience.
Horror foley sounds
 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-LXBFmNRDwU (montage of
different foley horror sounds with vegetable and fruit violence)
 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oqkT9Q6iKZI (creating and
editing foley sound at home)
 We could make the sound of a zombie breaking bones (or a
vampire) by snapping celery in half. Or by beating a tomato to make
in sound like someone is being beaten to death e.g. zombies
beating (attacking the human characters).
 To use these sound techniques, upload them onto garage band to
make them sound even more effective, or edit these sounds to
make a situation sound more dramatic.
Technique – camera tricks
 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tbeVSx1Gf4k
 To make fake violence look realistic, which will ultimately make the
audience believe that characters are really getting attacked, which
they are in the story but not in real life (our intention is not to
physically hurt someone). This intensifies the OTS.
 For example, using the technique from this video, we could use the
over-the-shoulder camera technique. This is where you use an
over-the-shoulder camera shot, and is where it looks like one
character is hitting another, even though no hitting is going on. For
our OTS we could use this technique except a zombie is slashing a
human around the face with its sharp fingernails, and the human
falls down, and we see a close up of the human with blood. The
shot will have to be quick though.
