3. Who are Civet cats?
• A small nocturnal (active at night) mammal native to tropical parts of Asia
and Africa.
• Some Asian countries use civet cats to produce high value products. But in
Sri Lanka they are least concerned.
• Sri Lanka has 3 civet species. One is endemic.

6. Reproduction in growth
• During breeding season males and females mark their territory
using oil secreted by their glands.
• It is thought that animals can enter estrus at any time of year in
India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka to enter year round breeding.
• Gestation period is around 65 days.
• One Female give birth to 2 to 5 kittens.
• The body weight of a kitten attained 1 kg at tenth week.
• Also they are weaned at 4 to 4.5 months old.
8. Economic Importance to Human
• As a pet.
• Food purpose.
– civet meat is usually consumed in village areas.
• Body parts are source of valuable material.
• Kopi Luwak coffee production
• Coat and tail – their pelts are sold as exotic fur.
• Controls pest population – mainly in India civets are used for
rodent control.
