Interceptive orthodontics refers to procedures that eliminate or reduce malocclusion in the developing dentition. The causes of malocclusion can include skeletal discrepancies, soft tissue factors, and local dental factors. Local dental factors that may require interceptive treatment include delayed eruption, retained primary teeth, infraocclusion, unilateral retained primary canines, double teeth, ectopic eruption, hypodontia, diastema, ectopic canines, thumb sucking, transposition, crowding, and space management. Serial extraction and first molar extraction are two interceptive approaches used to address crowding. The timing and specific approach to interceptive treatment depends on the individual clinical presentation and malocclusion.

with or without tooth exposure.
• Treatment timing: as soon as the supernumerary
tooth is detected.

• Definition: premature loss of one deciduous
canine as a result of early root resorption by
a crowded lateral incisor.
