The Official Multicultural Event of the North American International Auto Show
3
Good evening, and welcome to the 18th Annual Urban Wheel Awards.
From the very beginning, automotive industry CEOs, presidents, and a host of other top professionals in the business have
supported the Urban Wheel Awards. In addition to the value of promoting diversity, they recognized a significant aspect of the
value of the event lies in the positive content the event generates over a massive network of multicultural media outlets and
partnering organizations.
In other words, these executives know the Urban Wheel Awards have served to bolster brand recognition, as well as
establish trust among multicultural consumers. This is important, as study after study after study has shown consumers value
third party content over advertising tremendously.
In this case, this effort has largely been spearheaded by Decisive Media, the company behind the production of the
Urban Wheel Awards. Decisive Media led the automotive print industry by establishing the first automotive website back in
1995. Today, Decisive is the hub of a network of hundreds of organizations and media partners from every segment of the
automotive industry—as well as mainstream and multicultural media outlets.
The Decisive network was built to connect the industry, its leaders, and advertising agencies directly with diverse audiences.
Further, it was designed and developed specifically to save the industry millions of dollars by sparing each company the need
to build a multicultural communications strategy for every new campaign. This is because Decisive Media already has an
effective strategy in place of which they can take advantage.
Additionally, Decisive has developed a highly effective B2B content distribution platform, incorporating and informing
hundreds of multicultural organizations, dealers, media, and sub-segments of the auto industry. Partnerships with NADA,
AIADA, NAMAD, and a myriad of auto retail media outlets have helped establish trust among legions of dealers who use the
Urban Wheel Awards vehicles of the year to drive traffic into their showrooms.
Because of this, it can ultimately be said while the recognition of the people and products is very important, another
significant aspect of the Urban Wheel Awards lies in the engaging positive content the event engenders. The content generated
as a result of this event communicates to the multicultural consumer the degree to which the automotive industry values
their inclusion in a way even the glossiest award-winning advertisements could never convey.
And, just by being here tonight, you’re a huge part of that effort.
Thank You.

NAIAS is Proud to Embrace Cultural Diversity
The 18th Annual Urban Wheel Awards is a celebration that embodies the very heart
and soul of Detroit and the North American International Auto Show.
As chairman of the NAIAS, we are ready to welcome more than 5,000 international
journalists, and some 30,000 suppliers, engineers, technicians, branding people and
others who work in the auto industry from 25 countries around the world. And of course,
13,000 joyous Charity Preview fans who will be celebrating an already amazing week in
Detroit, while raising over $4 million for children’s charities. When it’s all said and done,
nearly 800,000 people will have visited the spectacular new Cobo Center – home of
arguably the top auto show in the world.
Like the fabulous vehicles at the North American International Auto Show, our industry
is diverse – from the auto manufacturers right through to the new car dealers, located
here in Detroit, and in thousands of communities across the nation.
Celebrating diversity and the accomplishments of those who have succeeded in one of
the toughest industries in the world makes for a wonderful event.
I know that my fellow members of the Detroit Auto Dealers Association, and everyone
connected with the NAIAS join me in congratulating the nominees that are recognized
here this evening.
Sincerely,
Bob Shuman

The broad diversity of America’s franchised new-car dealers is one

14 HISTORY OF THE URBAN WHEEL AWARDS
Founded as the Golden Wheel Awards in 1997, the Urban Wheel Awards were developed to recognize and honor
diversity in the auto industry. Some 350 people braved a major snowstorm to attend the first program, held on
Jan. 9, 1997, at the Renaissance Club in downtown Detroit.
The Golden Wheel Awards were renamed the Urban Wheel Awards on Jan. 7, 1999, to better reflect the mission
and purpose of Decisive Media (formerly On Wheels, Incorporated). Over the years, the venues have changed to
accommodate ever increasing audiences, and categories have been added to reflect progress in diversity.

Like A Man” (Kevin Hart), “Not Easily Broken” (Taraji Hen-
son), “The Game Plan” (Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson) and
“Ladder 49” (with John Travolta and Joaquin Phoenix).
Born in Cerritos, California, the athletic actor grew up
playing sports and attended college at Cal State Los Angeles
before entering the film business in 1990 with a small role
in “Freddy’s Nightmares.” This led him to a memorable
co-starring role as high school football player, Ricky

the Hood,” a part that brought the actor into mainstream
Hollywood stardom.
Among his many credits are the films “The Cave,” “Ana-
condas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid,” “Like Mike,” “The
Last Boy Scout,” “Under Siege 2: Dark Territory,” “G.I.
Jane,” “The Best Man,” “The Brothers,” “Breaking All the
Rules,” “Confidence,” “Two Can Play That Game,” “G.I.
Jane,” “Under Siege 2: Dark Territory,” and “The Inkwell.”
Recent theatrical releases for Morris Chestnut include
“Identity Thief” (Melissa McCarthy and Jason Batemen) and
“The Call” (Halle Berry). His current theatrical release in-
cludes the highly anticipated sequel to his starring role in “The
Best Man” entitled “The Best Man Holiday.” Television-wise
he stars in the recent and upcoming season of Showtime’s
critically-acclaimed “Nurse Jackie.”
He has also appeared on numerous television series such as
“American Horror Story,” “V,” and “C-16: FBI.”

We commend you
on your recognition.
The automotive market is far from ethnically homogenous. One-size-fits all
messaging doesn’t work. IHS Automotive recognizes that these diverse ethnic
markets make up a significant portion of the country’s buying power.
Built from two independent sources, IHS Automotive’s ethnicity data is the most
complete and accurate in the industry, enabling you to confidently:
• Measure	the	new	and	used	actual	vehicle	volumes
• Analyze	loyalty,	conquest	and	defection	by	ethnicity
• Communicate	to	the	African	American,	Asian	and	Hispanic	markets	with
targeted	marketing	lists
Call +1 248 728 8394 today to gain market share and increase return on
investment by tapping into those ethnic groups with the highest levels of
purchasing power including African Americans, Hispanics, and Asians.

Over time, we’ve been led to believe that luxury is synonymous with legacy and heritage. While we respect
the past, we’re more focused on the future—one that’s innovative and progressive. We believe that luxury
should not be defined by where it came from, but rather what it is. A luxury sedan is made from the finest
materials available and comes equipped with the most advanced onboard technology. It is the perfect
combination of power and performance, designed to instill a sense of exhilaration and confidence. While
some may still be convinced that history is what makes a luxury sedan, we invite you to come to your own

  • 5. The Official Multicultural Event of the North American International Auto Show 3 Good evening, and welcome to the 18th Annual Urban Wheel Awards. From the very beginning, automotive industry CEOs, presidents, and a host of other top professionals in the business have supported the Urban Wheel Awards. In addition to the value of promoting diversity, they recognized a significant aspect of the value of the event lies in the positive content the event generates over a massive network of multicultural media outlets and partnering organizations. In other words, these executives know the Urban Wheel Awards have served to bolster brand recognition, as well as establish trust among multicultural consumers. This is important, as study after study after study has shown consumers value third party content over advertising tremendously. In this case, this effort has largely been spearheaded by Decisive Media, the company behind the production of the Urban Wheel Awards. Decisive Media led the automotive print industry by establishing the first automotive website back in 1995. Today, Decisive is the hub of a network of hundreds of organizations and media partners from every segment of the automotive industry—as well as mainstream and multicultural media outlets. The Decisive network was built to connect the industry, its leaders, and advertising agencies directly with diverse audiences. Further, it was designed and developed specifically to save the industry millions of dollars by sparing each company the need to build a multicultural communications strategy for every new campaign. This is because Decisive Media already has an effective strategy in place of which they can take advantage. Additionally, Decisive has developed a highly effective B2B content distribution platform, incorporating and informing hundreds of multicultural organizations, dealers, media, and sub-segments of the auto industry. Partnerships with NADA, AIADA, NAMAD, and a myriad of auto retail media outlets have helped establish trust among legions of dealers who use the Urban Wheel Awards vehicles of the year to drive traffic into their showrooms. Because of this, it can ultimately be said while the recognition of the people and products is very important, another significant aspect of the Urban Wheel Awards lies in the engaging positive content the event engenders. The content generated as a result of this event communicates to the multicultural consumer the degree to which the automotive industry values their inclusion in a way even the glossiest award-winning advertisements could never convey. And, just by being here tonight, you’re a huge part of that effort. Thank You. Randi Payton President/CEO Decisive Media, Inc. As chairman of the NAIAS, we are ready to welcome more than 5,000 international journalists, and some 30,000 suppliers, engineers, technicians, branding people and others who work in the auto industry from 25 countries around the world. And of course, 13,000 joyous Charity Preview fans who will be celebrating an already amazing week in Detroit, while raising over $4 million for children’s charities. When it’s all said and done, nearly 800,000 people will have visited the spectacular new Cobo Center – home of arguably the top auto show in the world. Like the fabulous vehicles at the North American International Auto Show, our industry is diverse – from the auto manufacturers right through to the new car dealers, located here in Detroit, and in thousands of communities across the nation. Celebrating diversity and the accomplishments of those who have succeeded in one of the toughest industries in the world makes for a wonderful event. I know that my fellow members of the Detroit Auto Dealers Association, and everyone connected with the NAIAS join me in congratulating the nominees that are recognized here this evening. Some 350 people braved a major snowstorm to attend the first program, held on Jan. 9, 1997, at the Renaissance Club in downtown Detroit. The Golden Wheel Awards were renamed the Urban Wheel Awards on Jan. 7, 1999, to better reflect the mission and purpose of Decisive Media (formerly On Wheels, Incorporated). Over the years, the venues have changed to accommodate ever increasing audiences, and categories have been added to reflect progress in diversity. 2013 – SEVENTEENTH ANNUAL URBAN WHEEL AWARDS Honoring Women in the Automotive Industry Sunday, January 13, 2013 – Sound Board, MotorCity Casino Hotel Co-Hosts Edward James Olmos, Actor, Producer, Director, and Community Activist & Niecy Nash, Comedian & Actress Celebrity Presenters Vickie Winans, National and International Gospel Re- cording Artist; K’Jon,National and International Urban Recording Artist; L.
