5. The Official Multicultural Event of the North American International Auto Show
3
Good evening, and welcome to the 18th Annual Urban Wheel Awards.
From the very beginning, automotive industry CEOs, presidents, and a host of other top professionals in the business have
supported the Urban Wheel Awards. In addition to the value of promoting diversity, they recognized a significant aspect of the
value of the event lies in the positive content the event generates over a massive network of multicultural media outlets and
partnering organizations.
In other words, these executives know the Urban Wheel Awards have served to bolster brand recognition, as well as
establish trust among multicultural consumers. This is important, as study after study after study has shown consumers value
third party content over advertising tremendously.
In this case, this effort has largely been spearheaded by Decisive Media, the company behind the production of the
Urban Wheel Awards. Decisive Media led the automotive print industry by establishing the first automotive website back in
1995. Today, Decisive is the hub of a network of hundreds of organizations and media partners from every segment of the
automotive industry—as well as mainstream and multicultural media outlets.
The Decisive network was built to connect the industry, its leaders, and advertising agencies directly with diverse audiences.
Further, it was designed and developed specifically to save the industry millions of dollars by sparing each company the need
to build a multicultural communications strategy for every new campaign. This is because Decisive Media already has an
effective strategy in place of which they can take advantage.
Additionally, Decisive has developed a highly effective B2B content distribution platform, incorporating and informing
hundreds of multicultural organizations, dealers, media, and sub-segments of the auto industry. Partnerships with NADA,
AIADA, NAMAD, and a myriad of auto retail media outlets have helped establish trust among legions of dealers who use the
Urban Wheel Awards vehicles of the year to drive traffic into their showrooms.
Because of this, it can ultimately be said while the recognition of the people and products is very important, another
significant aspect of the Urban Wheel Awards lies in the engaging positive content the event engenders. The content generated
as a result of this event communicates to the multicultural consumer the degree to which the automotive industry values
their inclusion in a way even the glossiest award-winning advertisements could never convey.
And, just by being here tonight, you’re a huge part of that effort.
Thank You.

NAIAS is Proud to Embrace Cultural Diversity
The 18th Annual Urban Wheel Awards is a celebration that embodies the very heart
and soul of Detroit and the North American International Auto Show.
As chairman of the NAIAS, we are ready to welcome more than 5,000 international
journalists, and some 30,000 suppliers, engineers, technicians, branding people and
others who work in the auto industry from 25 countries around the world. And of course,
13,000 joyous Charity Preview fans who will be celebrating an already amazing week in
Detroit, while raising over $4 million for children’s charities. When it’s all said and done,
nearly 800,000 people will have visited the spectacular new Cobo Center – home of
arguably the top auto show in the world.
Like the fabulous vehicles at the North American International Auto Show, our industry
is diverse – from the auto manufacturers right through to the new car dealers, located
here in Detroit, and in thousands of communities across the nation.
Celebrating diversity and the accomplishments of those who have succeeded in one of
the toughest industries in the world makes for a wonderful event.
I know that my fellow members of the Detroit Auto Dealers Association, and everyone
connected with the NAIAS join me in congratulating the nominees that are recognized
here this evening.
Sincerely,

14 HISTORY OF THE URBAN WHEEL AWARDS
Founded as the Golden Wheel Awards in 1997, the Urban Wheel Awards were developed to recognize and honor
diversity in the auto industry. Some 350 people braved a major snowstorm to attend the first program, held on
Jan. 9, 1997, at the Renaissance Club in downtown Detroit.
The Golden Wheel Awards were renamed the Urban Wheel Awards on Jan. 7, 1999, to better reflect the mission
and purpose of Decisive Media (formerly On Wheels, Incorporated). Over the years, the venues have changed to
accommodate ever increasing audiences, and categories have been added to reflect progress in diversity.

growing market with multiple marketing and public relations tools.
DECISIVE Media incorporates a variety of communication
methods: targeted lists, national print, online digital and mobile
magazines, e-newsletters, an interactive Website, social media,
and video content. Areas of coverage include products and services,
autos, travel, business, entertainment, health, green, household,
pets, fitness, and food.
The magazines accomplish this with how-to articles, purchasing
tips, and product comparisons. Most of the content is generated
from independent experts in various fields of endeavor who provide
advice, opinions, blogs, interviews, and columns to help consumers
make smart decisions. DECISIVE also makes it easier for consumers
to shop for vehicles at local dealerships, buy auto parts and
accessories, view video content and ads, and connect with experts in
the various categories.
DECISIVE Magazines are published quarterly and titles
include DECISIVE, DECISIVE Latino, DECISIVE Auto, and
DECISIVE Auto Latino.
DECISIVE Mobile
editions are available
for current and back
issues on iPhone,
iPad, WeTab, Android,
and other web-based
devices.
DECISIVE’S Website
serves as a consumer
news hub and provides
daily content to major
multicultural social
networking, news sites and
search engines––as well as
our network of Web partners
and minority newspapers.
The ultimate goal of DECISIVE Media is to enable readers to be more “decisive” during these uncertain economic times.

Breathing new life into luxury.
The K900.
2015 K900 expected Spring 2014. Initially only available in select markets with limited availability. 2015 K900 V8 prototype shown with optional features. Not all features
are available on all trim levels.
Over time, we’ve been led to believe that luxury is synonymous with legacy and heritage. While we respect
the past, we’re more focused on the future—one that’s innovative and progressive. We believe that luxury
should not be defined by where it came from, but rather what it is. A luxury sedan is made from the finest
materials available and comes equipped with the most advanced onboard technology. It is the perfect
combination of power and performance, designed to instill a sense of exhilaration and confidence. While
some may still be convinced that history is what makes a luxury sedan, we invite you to come to your own
conclusion. Introducing the K900, from Kia. It challenges everything.TM

40. The 17th Annual Urban Wheel Awards
was held on Sunday, January 13, 2013 in the
Sound Board Theater, at the MotorCity Casino
Hotel in Detroit. Hosted by by award-winning
actors Edward James Olmos and Niecy Nash,
the event honored the contributions of women
in the automotive industry in management, manufacturing, engineering,
design, marketing, human resources, and communications, as well as
other segments of the industry. Companies dedicated to the development
and advancement of women in the auto industry were also recognized.
"Our mission is to ensure efforts in all aspects of diversity are
honored and rewarded with the Urban Wheel Awards. For seventeen
years, this has been the only event held during the NAIAS promoting
and celebrating diversity and inclusion in the
auto industry. We were extremely honored to
dedicate the 2013 event to women in recogni-
tion of their significant accomplishments and
successes in the automotive industry.” says
Randi Payton, UWA founder.
Proceeds from the UWA support the Emerging Diversity Education
Fund to provide scholarships, internships, and mentoring support for
ethnic minority college students pursuing careers in communications
and the auto industry.
In addition to the women honored, the Cadillac ATS was named Urban
Car of The Year, the Ram 1500 was named Urban Truck of The Year,
