Water: Remembered or Forgotten

Scientific knowledge had been exponential in this century and human step to the
red planet is very close. Human engineering had mastered to build infrastructures
in the ocean and exploit water kilometers beneath the earth’s surface. Many parts
of world which were previously thought to be barren and inaccessible are now
converted to be a valuable productive agricultural land and thrived with
developed society and wealth. Human controlled space satellites and ground
based robotics are faithful friends to incessantly monitor crop water, optimize
water use and production, and adopt precise agriculture practices. The factories,
larger retail stores and dining tables are decorated with countless variety of the
foods and vegetables, but their stories are equally interesting like human
evolution. In this journey, the effort to minimize the environmental damage,
ensure the survivability of all ecosystems and reduce the adverse effect to living
beings seems are not at the same pace. The current prolonged drought in
California, irredeemable groundwater depletion and its consequences as the
largest manmade subsidence shows the extent of human intervention in the
environment. The rise of sea level, damage to the infrastructures and the

intrusion of salt water to clean water are threatening the coastal ecosystem of
eastern United States and other parts of the world. To be clear, this salty water
cannot be used directly for drinking and agricultural production and it costs
enormous resources for every drop to desalinate. The severity of these problems
are not same in every part of the world. Many developing countries are still
looking efficient ways to utilize water resources to feed for growing populations,
to cope the energy crisis and manage the internal conflicts. The sectorial interest
among the countries as well as internal conflict within the countries had also been
tremendously increased. Larger cities are combating to the deteriorating water
quality of the rivers because of the unmanaged sanitation and harmful chemicals
from industry.
Longago, it had been realized that water is a scarce resource which cannot be
exchanged to any other resources. The time had come that we are in a verge of
legal, financial and power conflicts because of the water. The long thrust of the
human race to optimize the resources for humankind is probably ending as an
ugly exploitation. A tremendous amount of time and resources are needed to
correct some of these adverse ripple effects where some are irreversible. The
present race of development and dream of a prosperous society will fall apart if
water resources are not managed wisely. Now, many of us are not worried enough
about the fact that water will one day affect our daily survival as it seems
abundant the way we use now. When we finish the groundwater from deep
aquifers or contaminate from the salty water and harmful chemicals with
diminishing snow on the mountain with increased earth temperature, then there
will be a major shift in priorities. Water is not only in underground aquifers and
surface, but every particle of the air we breathe is associated with it. To find
another habitable planet is still like throwing stones in a dark and yet to wait for
many generations or never.
