How to start!! When to start!!
“You can plan your journey to the destination well only if you know the starting point”.
The best start lies in understanding your strengths and weaknesses and your interests in each
subject. This will help you convert your weakness to strength and increase your strengths further.
The more important step of all is to start studying. The more time you have, the easier it is for you.
The best time to start preparing for CET is from the beginning 1st
PUC. As soon as you have chosen
science stream and you are committed to go for engineering or medical or various other courses
available, most prefer engineering or medical. Now the entrance test for medical course (MBBS) and
dental course (BDS) is NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test). Entrance test for all the courses
will be CET. But if you have not yet started with the preparation, the best time to start is today itself.
There is no point in wasting the time by thinking about the wasted time. Instead get started with the
preparation.
“Yesterday is gone, Tomorrow hasn’t yet come. We have today, let us begin.”
Once you understand the pattern of the exam, start studying. NCERT books are the best to begin the
journey of CET. Understand all the concepts thoroughly. Along with that you can refer to any
material available (Some of them have been mentioned at the end of the book). Don’t read too
many books. Instead read a book but read it completely. Join a good coaching class if it is available at
your place. If not there is no point to worry because coaching classes and teachers have only a small
role to play in your CET preparation. Self-study is the main thing which is going to lead you in such
competitive exams. Understand all the basic concepts of each chapter. Start with the synopsis of
each chapter and make sure you get thorough with the formulae and the key point in each chapter.
But just reading the synopsis alone won’t help. Try to develop some shortcuts in mathematics and
physics, and the tricks to remember chemical reactions in chemistry. And don’t forget to give the
mock tests after the end of each chapter. Evaluate on your own and keep a record of the scores. This
will surely help you to know your developments day by day. Don’t just focus on answers; instead try
to know the way of approach to the answers. Speed and accuracy need to go hand in hand for a
successful CET preparation. This may be difficult initially but with sheer practice this can be
achieved.
• Develop a discipline of solving more number of problems per day. The more number of
problems you solve, the more efficiently you can crack the exam.
• Try solving Problems without the time limit initially. And as it goes try to solve within a
minute.
• Maintain accuracy.
• Solve as many model question papers as well as the previous year question paper as
possible.
• Keep a record of your developments.
• Approach your teachers and clear your doubts.
Know Your Goals
“Goals determine what you are going to be.”
People who make things happen know to set their goals. Setting goals will give you a clear cut idea
of what you want to achieve. Knowing your goals will make you unique amidst other competitors,
who have similar skills as that of you. Goals determine your potential and simultaneously help
increasing it.
It is good to have a little information regarding the career options available. Try to know the best
colleges, and courses they offer, their seat allotment, cut-off ranks etc. Check if some dream colleges
you want to get in have separate entrance exams. Know well about the colleges you want to get
admitted in and plan your preparation accordingly. By doing so will help you to prepare to the
competitive examination with more determination and perseverance.
Keeping your calm and believing in yourself can actually better your performance multi-fold.
Be Organised
“The bad news is time flies; the good news is you are the pilot.” -Michael Altshuler
Creating a study schedule is a time management method that can reduce student’s level of stress by
teaching them how to set aside the necessary amount of time for studying, and how to use that time
wisely. Systemize your available time into study hours by setting a timetable for yourself. Reserve
best hours of day for studying. During your study hours pay your complete attention without any
distractions. By setting a timetable you will be able to use your time of availability more productively
and efficiently. Why successful people are different from others is that they know the price of time.
If you choose to study early morning or late night then make sure during these hours you opt a
subject you are more interested in. Subjects which require lot of thinking ability such as
mathematics is preferable. This will help you in keeping your sleep away. A timetable will give you
perspective on what you need to accomplish and the time you have to do it. Such things will help
your study organized. Day time is more preferable to study compared to the night as it is easy to
read unaided by artificial light and hence keep you alert. During night hours make sure you are
studying under bright illuminating light directed onto your book. If you are feeling sleepy, make sure
you sleep rather than study. Make it a point to keep your timetable just above your comfort level. It
shouldn’t be stressful either. Stressful routine of studying may make you lose your interest on the
subjects. Don’t forget to include breaks in between your study hours.
Tips to enhance time table:
 Place the calendar or time table that you have created in a visible location so that it always
notifies you about your tasks.
 Don’t create a time table that is too stressful. You should be able to follow it.
 Study one subject at a time for no more than two hours.
 For every hour you study plan a 5 minutes break.
 Consistency in studying, poring over study materials and solving previous year papers will
help in getting success.
Have FUN during leisure
“People who cannot find time for recreation are obliged sooner or later to find time for illness”. -
John Wanamaker
Never study more than your limit in a single day. This might make you lose the interest on the
subjects the next day. Work hard!! Neither too hard, nor in your comfort zone. After every hour or
two you study, give a break of about 5-10 minutes. Regular breaks are necessary amidst your studies
to register whatever you have learnt, in your mind and relax the brain. You may do the things you
love in your leisure such as your hobbies. Do the things that look interesting rather than distracting
and exhausting. Spend time with your family, if you are staying with them. If not have regular talks
with them in phone and make sure you share your progress and problems with them. Socialize and
make friends with whom you can open up. Don’t make friends in quantities; rather make a small
social group of friends. Go on an outing at least once in a month and do not discuss studies during
this time. Watch a movie that will motivate you. If you are a sports person, spend some time playing.
If you love listening to music then go for it. Music is the best entertainment for the recreation of
brain. Indulge in extracurricular activities and college fests. Spend time with fun, playful people and
listen to jokes. Laughing will activate certain cells of the brain and helps you in relieving stress.
But the fun is only during the leisure and not at the cost of your studies.
How to wake up early??
“Lose an hour in the morning, and you will be hunting for it all day.” -Richard Whately
Sleep has a main role to play in busy schedules. Rest is necessary for brain to function efficiently.
Sleep deprivation is a recipe for disasters, especially the night before exam. If you are deprived of
sleep you won’t be able to perform up to the mark the next morning. So make sure your brain gets
necessary amount of rest. 6 hours of sleep is a must.
Some students may have the habit of working late night. But the best time recommended for study
is the early morning, wherein your mind will be fresh to intake and register new things into the
brain. Sir Benjamin Franklin has quoted that “Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy,
wealthy and wise”.
Some key tips to wake up early:
 Sleep well:
A good sleep is necessary to remember the things you have learnt. You require a minimum
6-7 hours of proper sleep daily to ensure the normal functioning of brain. It is the quality of sleep
that matters and not the quantity.
 Drink more water:
Dehydration will make you more tired and thus induce more sleep. Avoid caffeinated drinks.
 Plan the next day:
Think of the routine for the next day when you are going to bed. Also think whether you are
satisfied with today’s study or you need to still work harder on it.
 Get off the bed:
Set alarms. If any of your family member or roommate has the habit of waking up early, ask
them to wake you up too. Once you open your eyes make sure you get off the bed and don’t have a
second thought of taking a five minutes nap. These five minutes will surely turn to an hour.
 Get used to it:
Make waking up early a habit. A study says that it requires approximately about 21 days for
a routine to become a habit. Once it becomes your habit there is no need of any alarms.
How to Concentrate??
“Success in life is a matter not so much of talent as of concentration and perseverance.” -C. W.
Wendte
Human brain requires about 8 seconds of intense focus to process a piece of information, and then
convert it into memory. Your ability to concentrate on a particular thing depends on the structure of
your brain. If your brain isn’t performing well and if you are not able to concentrate then even with
the sheer practice you may not be able to catch the pace of preparation. And thus may fail to get the
desired results. Thus concentration and presence of mind has a main role to play in your preparation
for any competitive exams.
You can achieve your goal if you concentrate on the studies with devotion, dedication and
determination, regardless of the external influences like media, mobile and internet. Remarkable
success is only possible through a real ‘Tapas’
Here are some tips:
 Study at the same place:
Study at a place where people won’t be able to disturb you frequently. Avoid sitting near to
a window, in front of television, open place or any such place which is distracting. Having your own
private study room is most preferable. Once you have chosen a place, don’t change it frequently.
Stick on to that place. Make yourself comfortable.
 Study under bright light:
Make sure the place you sit has a bright illuminating light. Studying under dim light will
strain your eyes and also make you lose your concentration. Sit on a chair to avoid strain to your
neck and back pain. Avoid sitting on bed, you will surely feel like sleeping.
 Food habits:
Have a control on your diet. Overeating will create a huge load of digestion and thus give
more work to your brain. Hence overeating will definitely make you feel sleepy. Instead have a light
and healthy meal to avoid dizziness and increase your power of concentration.
 Keep everything you need nearby:
Keep all the study materials, text books, syllabus copy etc., close to you within your arm’s
reach. This will avoid you from getting up frequently.
 Keep calm, stop worrying:
Avoid stressful things while studying. This will disturb your brain and will have adverse effect
on your studies. Avoid watching news and horror stuffs before going to bed. This will disturb your
sleep. Worry is a main distraction. Hence stop worrying about silly things.
 Don’t oversleep:
As mentioned earlier, sleep is necessary for your brain to function productively. But
oversleeping will make you inactive. Firstly it consumes your time. Secondly, it makes you lazy and
you may lose the pace and rhythm of the preparation.
 Say no to electronic devices:
Nowadays, the main distractions for the students are television and smart phones. Keep
your cell phone switched off while studying. If you have a habit of studying in front of television,
leave it. If your family members are watching television and it is distracting you, then ask them to
reduce the volume. Feel free convey your problems.
 Do not listen to rumours:
There will be many rumours about the exam such as the postponement of exam, leaking of
the paper and many such things. Instead of wasting time thinking about them, concentrate on the
preparation.
 Don’t see what others are doing:
Just concentrate on the preparation. Try avoiding phone calls especially during the time of
exams because they distract the mind and you will lose the interest for studying. Once the exams are
over you can enjoy as much as u want.
Role of Parents
A student’s exam is an exam for parents as well. Parents definitely play a major role in student’s
success. Students especially need a desperate help throughout the preparation of any competitive
exam and on the day of exam as well. Parents should be like pillars of support for their child.
Whether it may be sharing and solving problems or dealing with emotional and psychological stress.
The competition in CET exam is growing fierce year by year, hence it is a parental duty to relieve the
stress of their child and teach them to stay mentally strong throughout. They should build up the
confidence in their child to deal with CET successfully.
Parents should assure their children that they are more concerned about the well-being then
the results.
Here are some tips for parents to make their child’s CET successful:
 Be in link with your child’s academics:
Keep in touch with the lecturers or tutors of your child and get notified about the
developments. Keep a vision on the weakness as well and try to find the reasons and solutions.
 Provide a supportive environment in home:
Creating a loving environment and having good relationships among all family members will
have a good impact on a student’s mind and they can study well. Don’t do any such activities that
will grab the attention of your child and distract them. Stop talking loudly or watching TV during
their study hours.
 Discuss their problems:
Be friendly with your child and ask him/her whether they are facing any problems which are
distracting their studies. Provide a solution if you can.
 Keep a watch:
Make sure your child is not wasting time in unnecessary activities like watching movies all
time. Keep a look on the friend circle of your child so that he/she don’t lose the right path.
 Spend some time with them:
Even though you have a busy routine spare some time for your children. Discuss with them
daily their progress in studies. Create an awareness of importance of CET (or any such competitive
exams). Make sure by doing so you won’t put more pressure on your child. You can expect their
academic success only if you are able to spend some time with them.
 Motivate and be an inspiration:
If your child is doing well in mock tests or any such test, don’t forget to appreciate them.
This will inspire them and make them work still harder. This will also increase their level of
confidence.
If your child isn’t doing well then, try to find out the reasons for it. Supporting them even on their
failures will help them stand again and start with a new determination.
 Stop comparing:
Every student has his/her own potential. Some may be good in academics and some in
sports and other activities. So stop comparing them with others. Unworthy comparison is surely an
act of discouragement.

The Big Day
The exam will be conducted on two day basis.
• The exam is a multiple choice question based exam.
• Each exam consists of 60 questions.
• Each question has 4 options one of which is correct.
• There is no negative mark for wrong answer. So please attempt all the questions.
• Don’t forget to take the hall ticket with you while going for the exam.
Exam timings:
Initial 10 minutes:
The initial TEN minutes will be given for the candidates to write and shade the particulars
such as Name, CET Number and Question booklet version code on the OMR sheets in the boxes
provided. Be very careful while writing or shading this part.
Next 70 minutes:
After the initial ten minutes, 70 minutes will be provided to the candidate to complete the
bottom portion of the OMR sheet. On the bottom portion, there will be 60 rows corresponding to 60
questions. The candidates are required to shade one of the 4 circles in each row corresponding to
each question.
Toppers’ Mantra
This method of attempting the exam has helped a lot of students to top the exams. We hope it
would be helpful to you too.
 Read the question carefully and mark the important points and data in it as you read.
 The question will always be set in three levels. So you can attempt the questions in different
rounds. Initially as said read and mark the important points in it. There are questions which
can be solved just by looking at it. As you read the question if you feel that it is difficult or
requires some steps then keep it for the next round.
 Once you finish off the easy questions your confidence will surely increase. Now when you
read the questions you need not read the whole question as you would have marked the
important points in each question. Attempt questions which you are confident of.
 By now you would have done most of the questions. If your preparation is done well you
probably will have adequate time to solve the left over questions. Try solving maximum
number of questions in that remaining time.
 As there is no negative marks make sure you tick every question. If you are lucky you’ll get a
few of them right.
Time management:
For any numerical problems in CET whether it may be in physics , chemistry or maths, unlike
board exams, one has to leave the practice of writing the formula and then substituting to get
answer. Instead start substituting directly keeping the formula in mind. If there are numerical
problems with smaller digits then try to solve it in mind. Avoid paperwork as much as possible. This
will save time. Initially it is difficult but with sheer practice it can be achieved.
Speed and accuracy:
If you are able to attempt all questions within the prescribed time limit, it is a positive point
for you. But if you have attempted all and got most of them wrong, then your speed is of no use to
you. As a result make sure speed and accuracy goes hand in hand.
Always use a ball point pen:
The answer sheet (OMR sheet) consists of two sheets. When you shade the top sheet the
pressure creates the impression on the sheet below. If a ball pen is used, it exerts sufficient pressure
to convert the bottom sheet chemical to a dark spot.
Think before you ink!
Once you mark a circle there is no way of erasing it. The scanner is very sensitive to the ink
so, even the slightest ink marks on the circles would be detected.
End of paper for each session:
The candidates are required to compulsorily affix their left hand thumb impression in the
space provided on the bottom portion of the OMR answer sheet of the upper with the ink-pad
provided by the room invigilator, after completion of each Session of the Test. Thereafter, the
invigilators will detach the lower sheet from the upper sheet at the perforations and hand over the
lower sheet replica to the candidates and candidates are allowed to carry the same with them.

The Results!
Waiting for your exam result can be extremely stressful. There is nothing wrong with any of
this. We have tried putting together some points which will help you cope with your feelings before
and on the day of result. We hope this helps.
The most important thing we want you to remember is that, even if things don’t go your
way, there are always options open to you. Sometimes, the best opportunity comes out of life’s
unexpected twists and turns.
Don’t bottle your feelings up
If you’re nervous or anxious, talk about it. Tell your family or friends, or write it down in a
diary. Don’t be embarrassed about your feelings – you might think nobody else is feeling this way
but chances are they are. Exams are stressful.
Make a plan
Be organised–know what time you’ve got to go and pick up your results and where you need to go.
Think about what you might need to do if you don’t get the grades you were hoping for so you’re
not panicking on the day.
If you didn’t get the exam results you were hoping for
Do not panic. We repeat, do NOT panic. You have options if you didn’t get the exam grades
you wanted.
Take a deep breath and start talking. Speak to your teacher, careers adviser and whoever
else you can to find out what you should do next.
Find out as much as you can before making a decision and remember, this is not the end of
the world. There are many extremely successful people out there who didn’t get the grades they
were hoping for either. There are lots of paths to success so use your disappointment as motivation
to find yours.
Again, you may want to stay off social media for the day. Chances are there’ll be lots of
excited chatter about results that won’t make you feel any better.
If you got the exam results you wanted
Hoorah! Massive well done to you and make sure you celebrate your tremendous achievement.
But be aware that others around you may not have had such happy news – so tone down
the gloating, shrieking and general madness until you know that there’s no one nearby whose upset
by their results.
Document Verification
The results are out! Some are happy and some are sad. But keeping the emotions apart, think “what
next?”
At the end of the examinations, you would be given a brochure which would be having all of the
details regarding the future proceedings. We have tried to explain the procedure in simple words
here. One can refer the brochure if he/she gets any doubt in any part of verification of documents
and online seats allotment process.

 Discuss with your parents/elders etc., about the choice of your course and also know the
scope after completing it. Make a firm decision about your career before starting option
entry.
 Note down the college code of the colleges you want to enter in the options. It is easy to
search the college using the “Search” option in the option entry column.
 It is recommended to download the option entry worksheet and write the priorities in it
before starting to enter the options in the system.
 Know your interests in the course, college infrastructure, course duration, distance from
your place, residential facilities etc.
 It is recommended not to start entering the options directly without preparatory work at
home, as it may lead to committing the mistakes like wrong entries/order of preference.
 Enter more number of options to avoid the risk of not securing a seat. Entering more options
will not be disadvantageous for you.
 Do not wait till the last date to enter the options. Usually there will be server busy problem.
Finish the option entry prior to the deadline, as there won’t be provision of extra time.
Modifying Order of Options:
 Go to “Modify Selected Option” window.
 Change the Numbers / Type the new numbers in the option field for new priority.
(Note: Take care that same number will not repeat in the options entry since the Priority
number against each course is unique)
 Click Update Button in the Options
 Newly Modified option will be loaded in the “Selected view Option” window
Delete Options:
 Go to “Modify Selected Option” window.
 Enter the number “0” (Zero) in the option field to delete.
(Note: More than One Option can be deleted at the same time)
 Click “Update” Button.
Print Option Report:
 Go to “Selected Options View” window.
 Cross verify the courses and colleges depending on the priority of Courses, Colleges and
Course type.
 Click hyperlink “short” or “detailed” to get the short or detailed report respectively. (If the
number of options entered is above 30 take a short report else a detailed report is better).

An Inspiration
Success is primarily a result of the effort one puts in. Success will never come when one
gives up trying to reach it. This is a small attempt to show you that HARD WORK will surely lead you
towards success.
This is the success story of Ananth G, The CET topper of Karnataka in Medical stream for
2015-2016 a student of the prestigious Alva’s Pre-University College, Moodbidri. We got the
opportunity to interact with the great achiever.
Q: Can you brief us on how was your preparation?
The preparation was simple and repetitive. I concentrated on both the theory as well as
MCQs. I referred and studied only the NCERT, which I think would be more than enough for all the
exams. One must develop the skill of understanding and comprehending things and need not break
the head referring 1000’s of other books for CET. This is the secret of my success.
Q: Did you expect that you would top the exams?
As I had prepared well I was confident of being in the top 100. After writing the exam and
cross verifying my answers with key answers I had a score of 174/180. I had the confidence of
making it to the top 10. But being the topper was a surprise, indeed a good one.
Q: What are your future plans?
I want to pursue my career as a doctor. I am taking up MBBS and will be doing my MD. I
want to serve the society and the people especially the needy ones.
Q: What is the Mantra behind your success?
Nothing is possible without the blessings of God and parents. The hard work that I put in and
the dedication helped me a lot. I tried approaching a topic in different ways and the one that I found
easy was used in the exams. The college faculty and my friends were very helpful. Hard work and
continuous efforts are the only things which make us what we are!
Q: What is your advice for the future CET aspirants?
I would advise them to concentrate on their goals and exams. Read each and every line of
the NCERT book. Not just read but analyse every part of it. You need to develop the skill of
understanding the subject and the concept behind it when you plan to study. If one is aiming to take
up medical, Biology is one part which requires much attention. Every chapter must be given equal
importance. Make a list of formulas in Physics and Maths as you study. Books like ‘NCERT at your
fingertips’ are a great help for students.
Make the best utilisation of time to succeed.
Q: How did the college support you?
Alva’s college is the other name for discipline. As I used to stay in the hostel the study
timings were already fixed. I just had to plan what to study. This helped me a lot. Right from the
hostel warden to the college faculty all were supportive. The daily routine began at 4:45 AM. By 5
we would start studying. This would go up to 6:45 AM. Then there were regular classes till noon and
special classes for CET in the afternoon. Specialist faculty and experts in the field would give us
expert guidance in cracking CET. I thank my college for all the facilities and support they have
provided us.
This is another success story of Abhilash, a student of Alva’s Pre-University College,
Moodbidri who studied in Kannada medium till class 10. He secured 16th
rank in Karnataka CET exam
2015-2016 in Engineering stream. He also secured 37th
rank in medical and 4th
rank in Agriculture
stream exam.
Q: You completed your education till class 10 in Kannada medium. Did you find it difficult when
you entered the PUC, which is in English context?
Initially I felt it very difficult. I couldn’t make up the lessons as they were completely
explained in English. But then lecturers started explaining both in English and Kannada. This gave me
confidence and helped me to understand all the topics more easily. If I had any doubts in any topic, I
would go to the department to get it clarified.
Q: Can you brief us on how was your preparation?
I studied the materials provided the college. I never used to compare myself to others.
Whenever I felt like studying, even if it was a short time I used to study with full concentration and
dedication. I used to pre-plan my study schedule and study accordingly.
Q: Share the moment of happiness when u got to know that you have got such a good rank.
I felt very happy in fact was overwhelmed when I got the result. It was a proud moment for
me.
Q: What is the Mantra behind your success?
Hard work will surely lead to success. I used to solve many question papers which helped me
in understanding various concepts and also in time management as well.
Q: What are your future plans?
I have opted for MBBS currently. I will be going for the Civil Services after I complete my
bachelor’s degree.
Q: What would you advice the future CET aspirants?
Even if you are from a Kannada medium you need not be scared. All it takes is hard work.
Concentrate well, understand and remember the topics lecturers say in class. Try clarifying doubts
then and there. If not, go to the lecturer and get the doubts clarified after the class ends.
Q: How did your college support you?
College supported in all the possible ways. Without their support I would not have secured
such a good rank. College study material and the various problems discussed in class were very
helpful. They made us to practice many papers which helped me to learn time management.
Thank You.

  • 7. How to start!! When to start!! “You can plan your journey to the destination well only if you know the starting point”. The best start lies in understanding your strengths and weaknesses and your interests in each subject. This will help you convert your weakness to strength and increase your strengths further. The more important step of all is to start studying. The more time you have, the easier it is for you. The best time to start preparing for CET is from the beginning 1st PUC. As soon as you have chosen science stream and you are committed to go for engineering or medical or various other courses available, most prefer engineering or medical. Now the entrance test for medical course (MBBS) and dental course (BDS) is NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test). Entrance test for all the courses will be CET. But if you have not yet started with the preparation, the best time to start is today itself. There is no point in wasting the time by thinking about the wasted time. Instead get started with the preparation. “Yesterday is gone, Tomorrow hasn’t yet come. We have today, let us begin.” Once you understand the pattern of the exam, start studying. NCERT books are the best to begin the journey of CET. Understand all the concepts thoroughly. Along with that you can refer to any material available (Some of them have been mentioned at the end of the book). Don’t read too many books. Instead read a book but read it completely. Join a good coaching class if it is available at your place. If not there is no point to worry because coaching classes and teachers have only a small role to play in your CET preparation. Self-study is the main thing which is going to lead you in such competitive exams. Understand all the basic concepts of each chapter. Start with the synopsis of each chapter and make sure you get thorough with the formulae and the key point in each chapter. But just reading the synopsis alone won’t help. Try to develop some shortcuts in mathematics and physics, and the tricks to remember chemical reactions in chemistry. And don’t forget to give the mock tests after the end of each chapter. Evaluate on your own and keep a record of the scores. This will surely help you to know your developments day by day. Don’t just focus on answers; instead try to know the way of approach to the answers. Speed and accuracy need to go hand in hand for a successful CET preparation. This may be difficult initially but with sheer practice this can be achieved. • Develop a discipline of solving more number of problems per day. The more number of problems you solve, the more efficiently you can crack the exam. • Try solving Problems without the time limit initially. And as it goes try to solve within a minute. • Maintain accuracy. • Solve as many model question papers as well as the previous year question paper as possible. • Keep a record of your developments. • Approach your teachers and clear your doubts.
  • 8. Know Your Goals “Goals determine what you are going to be.” People who make things happen know to set their goals. Setting goals will give you a clear cut idea of what you want to achieve. Knowing your goals will make you unique amidst other competitors, who have similar skills as that of you. Goals determine your potential and simultaneously help increasing it. It is good to have a little information regarding the career options available. Try to know the best colleges, and courses they offer, their seat allotment, cut-off ranks etc. Check if some dream colleges you want to get in have separate entrance exams. Know well about the colleges you want to get admitted in and plan your preparation accordingly. By doing so will help you to prepare to the competitive examination with more determination and perseverance. Keeping your calm and believing in yourself can actually better your performance multi-fold.
  • 9. Be Organised “The bad news is time flies; the good news is you are the pilot.” -Michael Altshuler Creating a study schedule is a time management method that can reduce student’s level of stress by teaching them how to set aside the necessary amount of time for studying, and how to use that time wisely. Systemize your available time into study hours by setting a timetable for yourself. Reserve best hours of day for studying. During your study hours pay your complete attention without any distractions. By setting a timetable you will be able to use your time of availability more productively and efficiently. Why successful people are different from others is that they know the price of time. If you choose to study early morning or late night then make sure during these hours you opt a subject you are more interested in. Subjects which require lot of thinking ability such as mathematics is preferable. This will help you in keeping your sleep away. A timetable will give you perspective on what you need to accomplish and the time you have to do it. Such things will help your study organized. Day time is more preferable to study compared to the night as it is easy to read unaided by artificial light and hence keep you alert. During night hours make sure you are studying under bright illuminating light directed onto your book. If you are feeling sleepy, make sure you sleep rather than study. Make it a point to keep your timetable just above your comfort level. It shouldn’t be stressful either. Stressful routine of studying may make you lose your interest on the subjects. Don’t forget to include breaks in between your study hours. Tips to enhance time table:  Place the calendar or time table that you have created in a visible location so that it always notifies you about your tasks.  Don’t create a time table that is too stressful. You should be able to follow it.  Study one subject at a time for no more than two hours.  For every hour you study plan a 5 minutes break.  Consistency in studying, poring over study materials and solving previous year papers will help in getting success.
  • 10. Have FUN during leisure “People who cannot find time for recreation are obliged sooner or later to find time for illness”. - John Wanamaker Never study more than your limit in a single day. This might make you lose the interest on the subjects the next day. Work hard!! Neither too hard, nor in your comfort zone. After every hour or two you study, give a break of about 5-10 minutes. Regular breaks are necessary amidst your studies to register whatever you have learnt, in your mind and relax the brain. You may do the things you love in your leisure such as your hobbies. Do the things that look interesting rather than distracting and exhausting. Spend time with your family, if you are staying with them. If not have regular talks with them in phone and make sure you share your progress and problems with them. Socialize and make friends with whom you can open up. Don’t make friends in quantities; rather make a small social group of friends. Go on an outing at least once in a month and do not discuss studies during this time. Watch a movie that will motivate you. If you are a sports person, spend some time playing. If you love listening to music then go for it. Music is the best entertainment for the recreation of brain. Indulge in extracurricular activities and college fests. Spend time with fun, playful people and listen to jokes. Laughing will activate certain cells of the brain and helps you in relieving stress. But the fun is only during the leisure and not at the cost of your studies.
  • 11. How to wake up early?? “Lose an hour in the morning, and you will be hunting for it all day.” -Richard Whately Sleep has a main role to play in busy schedules. Rest is necessary for brain to function efficiently. Sleep deprivation is a recipe for disasters, especially the night before exam. If you are deprived of sleep you won’t be able to perform up to the mark the next morning. So make sure your brain gets necessary amount of rest. 6 hours of sleep is a must. Some students may have the habit of working late night. But the best time recommended for study is the early morning, wherein your mind will be fresh to intake and register new things into the brain. Sir Benjamin Franklin has quoted that “Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise”. Some key tips to wake up early:  Sleep well: A good sleep is necessary to remember the things you have learnt. You require a minimum 6-7 hours of proper sleep daily to ensure the normal functioning of brain. It is the quality of sleep that matters and not the quantity.  Drink more water: Dehydration will make you more tired and thus induce more sleep. Avoid caffeinated drinks.  Plan the next day: Think of the routine for the next day when you are going to bed. Also think whether you are satisfied with today’s study or you need to still work harder on it.  Get off the bed: Set alarms. If any of your family member or roommate has the habit of waking up early, ask them to wake you up too. Once you open your eyes make sure you get off the bed and don’t have a second thought of taking a five minutes nap. These five minutes will surely turn to an hour.  Get used to it: Make waking up early a habit. A study says that it requires approximately about 21 days for a routine to become a habit. Once it becomes your habit there is no need of any alarms.
  • 12. How to Concentrate?? “Success in life is a matter not so much of talent as of concentration and perseverance.” -C. W. Wendte Human brain requires about 8 seconds of intense focus to process a piece of information, and then convert it into memory. Your ability to concentrate on a particular thing depends on the structure of your brain. If your brain isn’t performing well and if you are not able to concentrate then even with the sheer practice you may not be able to catch the pace of preparation. And thus may fail to get the desired results. Thus concentration and presence of mind has a main role to play in your preparation for any competitive exams. You can achieve your goal if you concentrate on the studies with devotion, dedication and determination, regardless of the external influences like media, mobile and internet. Remarkable success is only possible through a real ‘Tapas’ Here are some tips:  Study at the same place: Study at a place where people won’t be able to disturb you frequently. Avoid sitting near to a window, in front of television, open place or any such place which is distracting. Having your own private study room is most preferable. Once you have chosen a place, don’t change it frequently. Stick on to that place. Make yourself comfortable.  Study under bright light: Make sure the place you sit has a bright illuminating light. Studying under dim light will strain your eyes and also make you lose your concentration. Sit on a chair to avoid strain to your neck and back pain. Avoid sitting on bed, you will surely feel like sleeping.  Food habits: Have a control on your diet. Overeating will create a huge load of digestion and thus give more work to your brain. Hence overeating will definitely make you feel sleepy. Instead have a light and healthy meal to avoid dizziness and increase your power of concentration.  Keep everything you need nearby: Keep all the study materials, text books, syllabus copy etc., close to you within your arm’s reach. This will avoid you from getting up frequently.  Keep calm, stop worrying: Avoid stressful things while studying. This will disturb your brain and will have adverse effect on your studies. Avoid watching news and horror stuffs before going to bed. This will disturb your sleep. Worry is a main distraction. Hence stop worrying about silly things.
  • 13.  Don’t oversleep: As mentioned earlier, sleep is necessary for your brain to function productively. But oversleeping will make you inactive. Firstly it consumes your time. Secondly, it makes you lazy and you may lose the pace and rhythm of the preparation.  Say no to electronic devices: Nowadays, the main distractions for the students are television and smart phones. Keep your cell phone switched off while studying. If you have a habit of studying in front of television, leave it. If your family members are watching television and it is distracting you, then ask them to reduce the volume. Feel free convey your problems.  Do not listen to rumours: There will be many rumours about the exam such as the postponement of exam, leaking of the paper and many such things. Instead of wasting time thinking about them, concentrate on the preparation.  Don’t see what others are doing: Just concentrate on the preparation. Try avoiding phone calls especially during the time of exams because they distract the mind and you will lose the interest for studying. Once the exams are over you can enjoy as much as u want.
  • 14. Role of Parents A student’s exam is an exam for parents as well. Parents definitely play a major role in student’s success. Students especially need a desperate help throughout the preparation of any competitive exam and on the day of exam as well. Parents should be like pillars of support for their child. Whether it may be sharing and solving problems or dealing with emotional and psychological stress. The competition in CET exam is growing fierce year by year, hence it is a parental duty to relieve the stress of their child and teach them to stay mentally strong throughout. They should build up the confidence in their child to deal with CET successfully. Parents should assure their children that they are more concerned about the well-being then the results. Here are some tips for parents to make their child’s CET successful:  Be in link with your child’s academics: Keep in touch with the lecturers or tutors of your child and get notified about the developments. Keep a vision on the weakness as well and try to find the reasons and solutions.  Provide a supportive environment in home: Creating a loving environment and having good relationships among all family members will have a good impact on a student’s mind and they can study well. Don’t do any such activities that will grab the attention of your child and distract them. Stop talking loudly or watching TV during their study hours.  Discuss their problems: Be friendly with your child and ask him/her whether they are facing any problems which are distracting their studies. Provide a solution if you can.  Keep a watch: Make sure your child is not wasting time in unnecessary activities like watching movies all time. Keep a look on the friend circle of your child so that he/she don’t lose the right path.  Spend some time with them: Even though you have a busy routine spare some time for your children. Discuss with them daily their progress in studies. Create an awareness of importance of CET (or any such competitive exams). Make sure by doing so you won’t put more pressure on your child. You can expect their academic success only if you are able to spend some time with them.  Motivate and be an inspiration:
  • 15. If your child is doing well in mock tests or any such test, don’t forget to appreciate them. This will inspire them and make them work still harder. This will also increase their level of confidence. If your child isn’t doing well then, try to find out the reasons for it. Supporting them even on their failures will help them stand again and start with a new determination.  Stop comparing: Every student has his/her own potential. Some may be good in academics and some in sports and other activities. So stop comparing them with others. Unworthy comparison is surely an act of discouragement.

  • 31. The Big Day The exam will be conducted on two day basis. • The exam is a multiple choice question based exam. • Each exam consists of 60 questions. • Each question has 4 options one of which is correct. • There is no negative mark for wrong answer. So please attempt all the questions. • Don’t forget to take the hall ticket with you while going for the exam. Exam timings: Initial 10 minutes: The initial TEN minutes will be given for the candidates to write and shade the particulars such as Name, CET Number and Question booklet version code on the OMR sheets in the boxes provided. Be very careful while writing or shading this part. Next 70 minutes: After the initial ten minutes, 70 minutes will be provided to the candidate to complete the bottom portion of the OMR sheet. On the bottom portion, there will be 60 rows corresponding to 60 questions. The candidates are required to shade one of the 4 circles in each row corresponding to each question. Toppers’ Mantra This method of attempting the exam has helped a lot of students to top the exams. We hope it would be helpful to you too.  Read the question carefully and mark the important points and data in it as you read.  The question will always be set in three levels. So you can attempt the questions in different rounds. Initially as said read and mark the important points in it. There are questions which can be solved just by looking at it. As you read the question if you feel that it is difficult or requires some steps then keep it for the next round.  Once you finish off the easy questions your confidence will surely increase. Now when you read the questions you need not read the whole question as you would have marked the important points in each question. Attempt questions which you are confident of.  By now you would have done most of the questions. If your preparation is done well you probably will have adequate time to solve the left over questions. Try solving maximum number of questions in that remaining time.  As there is no negative marks make sure you tick every question. If you are lucky you’ll get a few of them right. Time management:
  • 32. For any numerical problems in CET whether it may be in physics , chemistry or maths, unlike board exams, one has to leave the practice of writing the formula and then substituting to get answer. Instead start substituting directly keeping the formula in mind. If there are numerical problems with smaller digits then try to solve it in mind. Avoid paperwork as much as possible. This will save time. Initially it is difficult but with sheer practice it can be achieved. Speed and accuracy: If you are able to attempt all questions within the prescribed time limit, it is a positive point for you. But if you have attempted all and got most of them wrong, then your speed is of no use to you. As a result make sure speed and accuracy goes hand in hand. Always use a ball point pen: The answer sheet (OMR sheet) consists of two sheets. When you shade the top sheet the pressure creates the impression on the sheet below. If a ball pen is used, it exerts sufficient pressure to convert the bottom sheet chemical to a dark spot. Think before you ink! Once you mark a circle there is no way of erasing it. The scanner is very sensitive to the ink so, even the slightest ink marks on the circles would be detected. End of paper for each session: The candidates are required to compulsorily affix their left hand thumb impression in the space provided on the bottom portion of the OMR answer sheet of the upper with the ink-pad provided by the room invigilator, after completion of each Session of the Test. Thereafter, the invigilators will detach the lower sheet from the upper sheet at the perforations and hand over the lower sheet replica to the candidates and candidates are allowed to carry the same with them.

  • 34. The Results! Waiting for your exam result can be extremely stressful. There is nothing wrong with any of this. We have tried putting together some points which will help you cope with your feelings before and on the day of result. We hope this helps. The most important thing we want you to remember is that, even if things don’t go your way, there are always options open to you. Sometimes, the best opportunity comes out of life’s unexpected twists and turns. Don’t bottle your feelings up If you’re nervous or anxious, talk about it. Tell your family or friends, or write it down in a diary. Don’t be embarrassed about your feelings – you might think nobody else is feeling this way but chances are they are. Exams are stressful. Make a plan Be organised–know what time you’ve got to go and pick up your results and where you need to go. Think about what you might need to do if you don’t get the grades you were hoping for so you’re not panicking on the day. If you didn’t get the exam results you were hoping for Do not panic. We repeat, do NOT panic. You have options if you didn’t get the exam grades you wanted. Take a deep breath and start talking. Speak to your teacher, careers adviser and whoever else you can to find out what you should do next. Find out as much as you can before making a decision and remember, this is not the end of the world. There are many extremely successful people out there who didn’t get the grades they were hoping for either. There are lots of paths to success so use your disappointment as motivation to find yours. Again, you may want to stay off social media for the day. Chances are there’ll be lots of excited chatter about results that won’t make you feel any better. If you got the exam results you wanted Hoorah! Massive well done to you and make sure you celebrate your tremendous achievement. But be aware that others around you may not have had such happy news – so tone down the gloating, shrieking and general madness until you know that there’s no one nearby whose upset by their results.

  • 50. An Inspiration Success is primarily a result of the effort one puts in. Success will never come when one gives up trying to reach it. This is a small attempt to show you that HARD WORK will surely lead you towards success. This is the success story of Ananth G, The CET topper of Karnataka in Medical stream for 2015-2016 a student of the prestigious Alva’s Pre-University College, Moodbidri. We got the opportunity to interact with the great achiever. Q: Can you brief us on how was your preparation? The preparation was simple and repetitive. I concentrated on both the theory as well as MCQs. I referred and studied only the NCERT, which I think would be more than enough for all the exams. One must develop the skill of understanding and comprehending things and need not break the head referring 1000’s of other books for CET. This is the secret of my success. Q: Did you expect that you would top the exams? As I had prepared well I was confident of being in the top 100. After writing the exam and cross verifying my answers with key answers I had a score of 174/180. I had the confidence of making it to the top 10. But being the topper was a surprise, indeed a good one. Q: What are your future plans? I want to pursue my career as a doctor. I am taking up MBBS and will be doing my MD. I want to serve the society and the people especially the needy ones. Q: What is the Mantra behind your success? Nothing is possible without the blessings of God and parents. The hard work that I put in and the dedication helped me a lot. I tried approaching a topic in different ways and the one that I found easy was used in the exams. The college faculty and my friends were very helpful. Hard work and continuous efforts are the only things which make us what we are!
  • 51. Q: What is your advice for the future CET aspirants? I would advise them to concentrate on their goals and exams. Read each and every line of the NCERT book. Not just read but analyse every part of it. You need to develop the skill of understanding the subject and the concept behind it when you plan to study. If one is aiming to take up medical, Biology is one part which requires much attention. Every chapter must be given equal importance. Make a list of formulas in Physics and Maths as you study. Books like ‘NCERT at your fingertips’ are a great help for students. Make the best utilisation of time to succeed. Q: How did the college support you? Alva’s college is the other name for discipline. As I used to stay in the hostel the study timings were already fixed. I just had to plan what to study. This helped me a lot. Right from the hostel warden to the college faculty all were supportive. The daily routine began at 4:45 AM. By 5 we would start studying. This would go up to 6:45 AM. Then there were regular classes till noon and special classes for CET in the afternoon. Specialist faculty and experts in the field would give us expert guidance in cracking CET. I thank my college for all the facilities and support they have provided us.
  • 52. This is another success story of Abhilash, a student of Alva’s Pre-University College, Moodbidri who studied in Kannada medium till class 10. He secured 16th rank in Karnataka CET exam 2015-2016 in Engineering stream. He also secured 37th rank in medical and 4th rank in Agriculture stream exam. Q: You completed your education till class 10 in Kannada medium. Did you find it difficult when you entered the PUC, which is in English context? Initially I felt it very difficult. I couldn’t make up the lessons as they were completely explained in English. But then lecturers started explaining both in English and Kannada. This gave me confidence and helped me to understand all the topics more easily. If I had any doubts in any topic, I would go to the department to get it clarified. Q: Can you brief us on how was your preparation? I studied the materials provided the college. I never used to compare myself to others. Whenever I felt like studying, even if it was a short time I used to study with full concentration and dedication. I used to pre-plan my study schedule and study accordingly. Q: Share the moment of happiness when u got to know that you have got such a good rank. I felt very happy in fact was overwhelmed when I got the result. It was a proud moment for me. Q: What is the Mantra behind your success? Hard work will surely lead to success. I used to solve many question papers which helped me in understanding various concepts and also in time management as well. Q: What are your future plans? I have opted for MBBS currently. I will be going for the Civil Services after I complete my bachelor’s degree. Q: What would you advice the future CET aspirants? Even if you are from a Kannada medium you need not be scared. All it takes is hard work. Concentrate well, understand and remember the topics lecturers say in class. Try clarifying doubts then and there. If not, go to the lecturer and get the doubts clarified after the class ends. Q: How did your college support you? College supported in all the possible ways. Without their support I would not have secured such a good rank. College study material and the various problems discussed in class were very helpful. They made us to practice many papers which helped me to learn time management.
