A
ccording to
American author and
sociologist, Mary
Parker Follett,
“Management is the
art of getting things done
through people.” It is the
process of planning, organising,
directing and controlling to
achieve the organisational goal.
Good management is
imperative for the success of
any organisation, be it in the
political, business, social or in
the cultural domain.
Technological advancements,
new-age workforce,
transformation in
communication patterns,
shrinking geographical
boundaries, etc., are bringing
in drastic changes in the socio-
economic and workplace
scenarios across the globe.
With changing times, the role of
managers is also tremendously
transforming. It is essential for
the managers to adapt to the
technologically advanced,
demographically complex and
geographically diverse world in
which they have to operate.
According to a McKinsey
report, “In the years ahead,
acceleration in the scope,
scale, and economic impact of
technology will usher in a new
age of artificial intelligence,
consumer gadgetry, instant
communication, and boundless
information while shaking up
business in unimaginable
ways.” Managers must be
prepared to deal with this
massive change.
THE WAY AHEAD
The scenario in India will not
be different. The management
process is often complex in
several Indian organisations
leading to inefficiency and
delay in achieving
organisational goals. Large
organisations are by nature
complex, and over the years,
circumstances have conspired
to add layer upon layer of
complexity to how businesses
are structured and managed.
Well-intended responses to new
business challenges such as
globalisation, emerging
technologies, regulations, and
so on, have left companies that
are increasingly ungovernable,
unwieldy and underperforming.
In many, more energy is
devoted to navigating the
labyrinth than achieving
results. Accountability is
unclear, decisions are muddy,
and data are sliced and diced
time and again with no clear
idea of how the information will
use the accumulation of small
organisational changes, and
how the proliferation of
products, the lack of control
over costs, support function
inefficiencies and over-
reporting are making matters
worse. The complex
management methods and
processes that had come into
being are not taking them to
progress.
It is time to reimagine
management in the
organisations. Through
the two-day long conference,
Kerala Management
Association starts the
deliberations on reimagining
management in all
spectrums, to simplify the
perspectives, concepts,
methods, and processes so
that they go with the times,
leading to a resurgence
that makes management
more manageable. The
event brings together thought
leaders from all functions of
management from various
industry verticals as well
as from academia.

The act of management
has now come down to its
actors creating
complications, to resolve
it later at higher costs, for
gaining brownie points. It
also is at a stage of having
complicated itself where
the participants find it
extremely difficult to
understand, follow and
apply the same. How do
we simplify the tenets,
theories, methods,
postulations, hypotheses,
etc., of management, to
make our lives and
profession easier? For
that, we need to manage
management.
THE CHANGING
MANAGEMENT
LANDSCAPE
Jibu Paul
President, KMA
As a nation where the
majority of its people are
still living in the villages,
India’s woes of depleted
rural progress and the
weakening of agriculture
have increased
unemployment.
Unemployment in general
in India is at a record
high. The challenges of the
manufacturing sector,
when added to it,
complete the rot. How do
we stem the rot and bring
India back to a resurgent
mode? We will discuss this
scenario and explore ways
of reimagining our
management style to
enable the resurgence at
the KMA Annual National
Convention 2020.
