According to historical accounts, using water as fuel has been experimented with as far back as 1799 and 1805, when William Nicholson and Isaac de Rivas conducted experiments with electrolysis and made the first water-powered car, respectively. There are two main ways water can be used as fuel: through an electrochemical conversion process in a fuel cell, which separates electrons and protons from the water to produce electrical power; or through combustion of hydrogen produced from water in an modified internal combustion engine similar to gasoline engines. Both methods convert the chemical energy of hydrogen obtained from water into mechanical energy to power vehicles.
