An Infographic of Georgia Smithʼs Life

Brief
Create an infographic of life experiences of a colleague through the information shared by
the person. The details provided the person were primarily about her interests, activities,
location and relations. Furthermore the task was also to filter key information and create a
graphic that represents those nuances qualitatively as well as quantitatively.
After the graphic is finalized the platform shifts to Augmented Reality toolkit to explore
further interactivity.
Phase I - Info Graphic Creation
1. Data Gathering
Information provided by Georgia enumerated qualitative information in form of a small
paragraphs mostly carrying information about her relation with family members, education
and travels. Along side quantitative information in a tabular format which specifically record
activities and interest during each year of her past 23 years.

The information provided was on a yearly timeline. Mostly under very specific sections of
a. Location, residence address
b. Family relations
c. Education
d. Sports activities
e. Music instruments
f. Artist selection
g. Language
The information though very specific required larger themes for further simplification.
The task for me here was to create broader themes for ease of readability as well separate
qualitative and quantitive information without loosing the essence of a life story. Instances
of content micro detailing such as residence address and house number were dropped to
avoid information overload.
The final themes identified were,

The information provided was on a yearly timeline therefore I tried to accommodate the
information on a linear scale. But the challenge I encountered was to represent qualitative
information that is not time based but emotional.
Georgia and the designers, in the case myself identified with each other over common
music taste. Therefore one of my strongest was around a ‘Record Album’, it gave me the
flexibility of a circle which can I related to the ever moving circle of life. The circle could be
divided into sectors to mark a duration of an activity and many such concentric circles can
represent different activities.

5. Final Output and Detailing
Starting from the smallest circle at the heart of the graphic. The center ‘g’ signifies the
initial of her name. Abbreviations Ma, Ar, Le, Al are her brothers and sisters who she is
very close to, of which Ma (Mariaana) she is closest to. The semi circle indicates the time
her parents got divorced. When her father got remarried she got 3 brothers. During the
interview she particularly pointed out how close she is to all her brother and sister,
therefore they take the center of her life.
The number on the grey circle indicate her age and moving out the colored areas define
the span of an activity. The background Bluish-grey was selected since her favorite color is
Graphite
Finally the title “Steady As She Goes”, is an irony to her shifting interests as if the search is
still not over. The title also is song title from the band ‘The Raconteurs’ which we both like.

Phase II - Augmented Reality
1. Marker Creation
The primary tool to achieve AR with interaction is by using markers created on a 8x8 or
16x16 matrix. Then using flash to connect each images to a particular marker. The web
acts as a mode of interfacing, thus when a marker is kept in front it reveals the infographic.

Six options for the viewer were created
a. Overall
b. Zoomed in
c. Language
d. Sports
e. Music
f. Activity

  • 2. Brief Create an infographic of life experiences of a colleague through the information shared by the person. The details provided the person were primarily about her interests, activities, location and relations. Furthermore the task was also to filter key information and create a graphic that represents those nuances qualitatively as well as quantitatively. After the graphic is finalized the platform shifts to Augmented Reality toolkit to explore further interactivity. Phase I - Info Graphic Creation 1. Data Gathering Information provided by Georgia enumerated qualitative information in form of a small paragraphs mostly carrying information about her relation with family members, education and travels. Along side quantitative information in a tabular format which specifically record activities and interest during each year of her past 23 years. Phase I - Info. Graphic 1. Data gathering 2.   • 3. 2. Filtering Content and Information flow The information provided was on a yearly timeline. Mostly under very specific sections of a. Location, residence address b. Family relations c. Education d. Sports activities e. Music instruments f. Artist selection g. Language The information though very specific required larger themes for further simplification. The task for me here was to create broader themes for ease of readability as well separate qualitative and quantitive information without loosing the essence of a life story. Instances of content micro detailing such as residence address and house number were dropped to avoid information overload. The final themes identified were, Content structuring Core 1. Age 2. Family Relations Themes Supporting 1. Language 2. Sports 3. Activity 4. Music
  • 4. 3. Concept Doodle The information provided was on a yearly timeline therefore I tried to accommodate the information on a linear scale. But the challenge I encountered was to represent qualitative information that is not time based but emotional. Georgia and the designers, in the case myself identified with each other over common music taste. Therefore one of my strongest was around a ‘Record Album’, it gave me the flexibility of a circle which can I related to the ever moving circle of life. The circle could be divided into sectors to mark a duration of an activity and many such concentric circles can represent different activities. 4.   • 6. 5. Final Output and Detailing Starting from the smallest circle at the heart of the graphic. The center ‘g’ signifies the initial of her name. Abbreviations Ma, Ar, Le, Al are her brothers and sisters who she is very close to, of which Ma (Mariaana) she is closest to. The semi circle indicates the time her parents got divorced. When her father got remarried she got 3 brothers. During the interview she particularly pointed out how close she is to all her brother and sister, therefore they take the center of her life. The number on the grey circle indicate her age and moving out the colored areas define the span of an activity. The background Bluish-grey was selected since her favorite color is Graphite Finally the title “Steady As She Goes”, is an irony to her shifting interests as if the search is still not over. The title also is song title from the band ‘The Raconteurs’ which we both like. Final Outcome

  • 9. Phase II - Augmented Reality 1. Marker Creation The primary tool to achieve AR with interaction is by using markers created on a 8x8 or 16x16 matrix. Then using flash to connect each images to a particular marker. The web acts as a mode of interfacing, thus when a marker is kept in front it reveals the infographic. 2.
