5. HISTORY
Inaugurated as Sindh High College by Lord Reay,
Governor of Bombay on 17-Jan-1882, the
college was renamed D.J Science College upon
completion on the present structure on 19-Nov-
1887. Located in the heart of old Karachi. The
college is named after DIWAN DAYARAM
JETHMAL, it’s main benefactor. The cost of
construction is reported to have been RS 186,514
out of which the government contributed RS
97,193.
ARCHITECT
This building is designed by JAMES STRACHAN, and
considered this architect’s greatest achievement.

7. AQ BLOCK:
A Q Block has only classrooms.
MSC BLOCK:
MSC Block is under construction. It is
opposite to AQ Block.
STATE OF ART GYMNASSIUM:
It is adjacent to AQ Block.

building is a fantastic aesthetic
undertaking which has not lost it’s
grandeur with time.

9. ARCHITECTURAL
ASPECTS
 The architecture is a typical example
of ITALIAN ARCHITECTURAL STYLE.
 The floor comprised MOSAIC TILES.
 The 8 foot wide staircase was fitted
with cast iron work.

Façade
The façade of the
Building is full of windows
and there are ionic column on entrance.

12. COLUMNS
The order of columns are ionic.
ARCHES
Arches are semi circular.
DOMES
There is one dome on the top of the
center of the building.

13. • BUTTRESSES
Buttresses supports the interior and exterior
walls of the building.
• OPEN WINDOWS
Open windows allows natural ventilation in
the building.

14. ENVIRONMENTAL ASPECTS
The building in located in the heart of the
city.. The weather here is hot and dry.. The
building has to respond wind, hot
temperature and sunlight.

15. SOCIAL ASPECTS
• This building is one of the oldest building
in Karachi.
• But it doesn’t losses it’s importance
throughout the year.
• It is considered as one of the best
science college in Karachi.
• More than thousand of students get
educated from this college.
