Objectives:-
At the end of this lecture you will be able to:
1-Understand methods of Data presentation
2-Know the types of graphs.
Data presentation:
The aim of presenting data is to produce a precise and obvious
demonstration of observations.
Methods of Data Presentation
A. Mathematical presentation (by using numbers)
B. Tabular presentation (by using tables)
C. Graphical presentation (by using charts and figures)
A. Mathematical Presentation
This method is based on use the measures of central tendency and
measures dispersion for presentation of data.
B. Tabular Presentation as:-
a. Simple frequency distribution table.
b. Class interval frequency distribution table.
The characteristics of tables:
1.Each table should have a number.
2.Each table should have a title written at the top of the table, this title
should answer the following questions:-
(what, who, where, and when)
-(What) the material contained in the table?
-(Who) persons involved in study?
-(Where) location of study?
-(When) time of the study?
3.Table should be simple, easy to be understood, and self explanatory.
4.Each table should have clear headings for each column.
5.Each table should contain a total at the end of each column.
6.We should avoid the use of abbreviations and codes, and if we have to use
them we should refer to them at the bottom of the table.
7.If we use any number from any reference or book, we should refer to it at
the bottom of the table.
A. Simple frequency distribution table:
It is the arrangement of data according to their magnitude and the
frequency. When we want to complete the table, it is composed of
many columns including:
-The values of the variable (X).
-The frequency of occurrence or recurrence (f).
-The cumulative frequency (c. f= f + previous c.f).
-The relative frequency (r.f.);(r.f.= f / n).
-The cumulative relative frequency (c.r.f = r.f + previous c.r.f).
-The relative frequency percentage (r.f.%);(r.f.%= f / n X 100).
-The cumulative relative frequency percentage (c.r.f.%) as in the following
example :
Parity frequency Cum. f r.f. c.r.f. r.f.% c.r.f.%
0 25 25 0.25 0.25 25% 25%
1 14 39 0.14 0.39 14% 39%
2 16 55 0.16 0.55 16% 55%
3 18 73 0.18 0.73 18% 73%
4 & more 27 100 0.27 1.00 27% 100%
Total 100 -- 1.00 -- 100% --
Table 1: The parity distribution of females attending ANC unit in
Al-Zahraa PHC in 2018.
B. Class-interval frequency distribution table:
The data of continuous quantitative type is presented here as
intervals, the steps to present the data by C.I. table is as follows:
1. Count the number of observations(n).
2.Determine the smallest (XS) and the largest values(XL).
3.Decide whether to present them in simple or in C.I. table.
4.If we present them in C.I. table, we have to determine the number
of C.I. (K) according to Sturges' formula:
K= 1+ 3.322 log10 n
5.Then determine the width of C.I. (W)
R (XL - XS)
W = ------ = -------------
K K
R: Range of data distribution
K : Number of C.I.
XL: Largest value in sample
XS: Smallest value in sample
6.The determine the C.I. putting in mind it is better to start with a round
number for the first C.I. without gaps and no overlapping.
7.Then present the frequency of observations according to these C.I. by
tallying.
The additional characteristics of C.I. tables:
1.The number of C.I. (K) should not be less than 5 (in order not to
lost the details) and not more than 15 (still the data is too wide). The
preferable number of C.I. is 6 – 12.
2.Constant width of C.I.
3.No gaps and No overlapping between C.I. (so as the observation
will be presented once only).

C. Graphical presentation
A graph is a picture or figure that represents data in an organized
manner.
The characteristics of graphs:
1.Graphs should be simple, easy to be understood, and self
explanatory.
2.Each graph should have a number.
3.Each graph should have a title written at the bottom of the graph.
And answer the following questions; what, who, where, and when.
5.We should avoid the use of abbreviations and codes, and if we
have to use them we should refer to them inside the graph.
Types of graphs:
1. Bar chart:
It is a type of graph used to present data of qualitative type,
composed of number of bars separated from each other, the width
of the bar is not of that importance but it is preferable to be of the
same width (so as to give true impression), the length of the bar is
of importance and it is drawn proportional to the frequency or
percentage.

2. Pie chart:
Is used for qualitative data. It is composed of a circle divided into sectors
with areas proportional to the frequency or relative frequencies of the
categories of variable. It is better to start the circle from 12 o'clock and to
run with clockwise direction, beginning with largest to lowest frequency.
To represent the data as pie chart, we must do the following:
a. Find relative frequency (r.f) of each category in the variable,
b. Multiply r.f by 360° to find the degree of each category in the circle.

3. Histogram:
It is a type of graph used to present continuous quantitative data
arranged in class-interval. It is composed of number of bars
adherent to each other, the width of bars is very important which
equal to the width of C.I., and the length of the bars is proportional
to the frequency of C.I. or its percentage. So the area in histogram is
very important and it represent one unit (100%), equal to the
probability.

Frequency
Figure 4: The haemoglobin level in g/dL for 70 pregnant women
in Al-Emamian medical city in 2018.
4. Line graph (frequency polygon):
-It is a graphic representation used to present discrete quantitative data, also it can
be derived from histogram (that is used to present continuous quantitative data
arranged in class-interval) by taking the mid point at the top of each bar, joining
them by straight lines.
-The line graph should not be left open, it should be closed by taking the mid point
of the C.I. before the first C.I. (it has a frequency of zero) and taking the mid point of
the C.I. after the last C.I. (it has a frequency of zero). So the line graph will join the x-
axis at these two ends. The area of line graph below the line above the X axis is equal
to the area of histogram, equal to 1 unit, equal to 100%, equal to the probability.
-Also line graph is used when we want to present two groups by one graph for the
seek of comparison, which is not possible by histogram (as one bar of group 1 will
cover another bar from group 2).

5. Spot map (spot chart, map chart):
It is a graphic representation used to present data by map.
6. Scatter diagram:
It is a graphic representation used to present data for correlation
and regression to show the relationship between two quantitative
variables.

7. Cumulative relative frequency percentage curve:
It is a special type of line graph in which X axis is the variable and
the Y axis is the c.r.f.%, it is used to calculate the value of the
median precisely. The shape of the curve or line is of what is
called sigmoid shape (sigmoid curve).

Data presentation2019.pptx

  • 1. Dr.Nibras Alaa Family & community medicine
  • 2. Objectives:- At the end of this lecture you will be able to: 1-Understand methods of Data presentation 2-Know the types of graphs.
  • 3. Data presentation: The aim of presenting data is to produce a precise and obvious demonstration of observations. Methods of Data Presentation A. Mathematical presentation (by using numbers) B. Tabular presentation (by using tables) C. Graphical presentation (by using charts and figures)
  • 4. A. Mathematical Presentation This method is based on use the measures of central tendency and measures dispersion for presentation of data. B. Tabular Presentation as:- a. Simple frequency distribution table. b. Class interval frequency distribution table. The characteristics of tables: 1.Each table should have a number. 2.Each table should have a title written at the top of the table, this title should answer the following questions:- (what, who, where, and when)
  • 5. 6.We should avoid the use of abbreviations and codes, and if we have to use them we should refer to them at the bottom of the table. 7.If we use any number from any reference or book, we should refer to it at the bottom of the table.
  • 6. A. Simple frequency distribution table: It is the arrangement of data according to their magnitude and the frequency. When we want to complete the table, it is composed of many columns including: -The values of the variable (X). -The frequency of occurrence or recurrence (f). -The cumulative frequency (c. f= f + previous c.f). -The relative frequency (r.f.);(r.f.= f / n). -The cumulative relative frequency (c.r.f = r.f + previous c.r.f). -The relative frequency percentage (r.f.%);(r.f.%= f / n X 100). -The cumulative relative frequency percentage (c.r.f.%) as in the following example :
  • 7. Parity frequency Cum. f r.f. c.r.f. r.f.% c.r.f.% 0 25 25 0.25 0.25 25% 25% 1 14 39 0.14 0.39 14% 39% 2 16 55 0.16 0.55 16% 55% 3 18 73 0.18 0.73 18% 73% 4 & more 27 100 0.27 1.00 27% 100% Total 100 -- 1.00 -- 100% -- Table 1: The parity distribution of females attending ANC unit in Al-Zahraa PHC in 2018.
  • 8. B. Class-interval frequency distribution table: The data of continuous quantitative type is presented here as intervals, the steps to present the data by C.I. table is as follows: 1. Count the number of observations(n). 2.Determine the smallest (XS) and the largest values(XL). 3.Decide whether to present them in simple or in C.I. table. 4.If we present them in C.I. table, we have to determine the number of C.I. (K) according to Sturges' formula: K= 1+ 3.322 log10 n
  • 9. 5.Then determine the width of C.I. (W) R (XL - XS) W = ------ = ------------- K K R: Range of data distribution K : Number of C.I. XL: Largest value in sample XS: Smallest value in sample 6.The determine the C.I. putting in mind it is better to start with a round number for the first C.I. without gaps and no overlapping. 7.Then present the frequency of observations according to these C.I. by tallying.
  • 10. The additional characteristics of C.I. tables: 1.The number of C.I. (K) should not be less than 5 (in order not to lost the details) and not more than 15 (still the data is too wide). The preferable number of C.I. is 6 – 12. 2.Constant width of C.I. 3.No gaps and No overlapping between C.I. (so as the observation will be presented once only).

  • 14. C. Graphical presentation A graph is a picture or figure that represents data in an organized manner. The characteristics of graphs: 1.Graphs should be simple, easy to be understood, and self explanatory. 2.Each graph should have a number. 3.Each graph should have a title written at the bottom of the graph. And answer the following questions; what, who, where, and when. 5.We should avoid the use of abbreviations and codes, and if we have to use them we should refer to them inside the graph.
  • 15. Types of graphs: 1. Bar chart: It is a type of graph used to present data of qualitative type, composed of number of bars separated from each other, the width of the bar is not of that importance but it is preferable to be of the same width (so as to give true impression), the length of the bar is of importance and it is drawn proportional to the frequency or percentage.

  • 19. 2. Pie chart: Is used for qualitative data. It is composed of a circle divided into sectors with areas proportional to the frequency or relative frequencies of the categories of variable. It is better to start the circle from 12 o'clock and to run with clockwise direction, beginning with largest to lowest frequency. To represent the data as pie chart, we must do the following: a. Find relative frequency (r.f) of each category in the variable, b. Multiply r.f by 360° to find the degree of each category in the circle.
  • 20. Normal vaginal delivery; 478; 79.7% Forceps delivery; 65; 10.8% Caesarean section; 57; 9.5% Figure 3:The method of delivery of 600 babies born in Al-Emamian medical city at Obstetrical ward for the year 2018.
  • 21. 3. Histogram: It is a type of graph used to present continuous quantitative data arranged in class-interval. It is composed of number of bars adherent to each other, the width of bars is very important which equal to the width of C.I., and the length of the bars is proportional to the frequency of C.I. or its percentage. So the area in histogram is very important and it represent one unit (100%), equal to the probability.

  • 23. 4. Line graph (frequency polygon): -It is a graphic representation used to present discrete quantitative data, also it can be derived from histogram (that is used to present continuous quantitative data arranged in class-interval) by taking the mid point at the top of each bar, joining them by straight lines. -The line graph should not be left open, it should be closed by taking the mid point of the C.I. before the first C.I. (it has a frequency of zero) and taking the mid point of the C.I. after the last C.I. (it has a frequency of zero). So the line graph will join the x- axis at these two ends. The area of line graph below the line above the X axis is equal to the area of histogram, equal to 1 unit, equal to 100%, equal to the probability. -Also line graph is used when we want to present two groups by one graph for the seek of comparison, which is not possible by histogram (as one bar of group 1 will cover another bar from group 2).

  • 25. 5. Spot map (spot chart, map chart): It is a graphic representation used to present data by map.
  • 26. 6. Scatter diagram: It is a graphic representation used to present data for correlation and regression to show the relationship between two quantitative variables. Y * * * X
  • 27. 7. Cumulative relative frequency percentage curve: It is a special type of line graph in which X axis is the variable and the Y axis is the c.r.f.%, it is used to calculate the value of the median precisely. The shape of the curve or line is of what is called sigmoid shape (sigmoid curve).
