5. What is NC Thinner
N.C. THINNER is Nitro cellulose Thinner & it is a mixture of
esters, glycol, alcohol, aromatic solvents and ketones suitable
diluents to all nitro products. It is manufactured for reducing
lacquers before they are applied by different methods. Mainly used
for solvent based nitro product.
The thinner is best suited to all paints and coating that are nitro-
based. It has been blended in exact proportion to reduce the lacquers
before they are used on the intended surface.
6. Types of NC thinner
There are three types of NC thinner on the basic of evaporation
Slow evaporating
medium evaporating
high evaporating
7. Basic raw materials
Basic raw material of NC
thinner is
(1) esters
(2) glycol
(3) alcohol
(4) aromatic solvents
(5) ketones
(6) xylene
8. Manufacturing process
NC lacquer which probably is a complicated solvent . We blend following
solvents for preparation of NC thinner.
Aromatic solvent : Toluene, Xylene.
2. Alcohol solvent : iso- propyl alcohol, Iso-butanol n-butanol etc
3. Ketones : acetone , methyl iso-butyl ketone . Methyl ethyl ketone etc.
4. Acetate : ethyl acetate, butyl acetate, 3-methoxy acetate etc.
5. Ether
Preparation :
Standard NC thinner : Xylene ( 50 ), ethyl acetate ( 15 ), iso-propyl alcohol
( 10 ) ,n-butanol ( 10 ), methyl iso-butyl k ( 15 ) total 100 parts.
Add more xylene if you need a strong one and aliphatic one for less strong
thinner.
10. Testing of NC thinner
Compatibility -The Nitrocellulose must give a clear bright finish at very
low (5%) to high concentration-depending on the grade. This test is
done in a glass container to check the clarity.
Viscosity -Different grades will affect this. A sample is obtained of a
quality product and the viscosity of the sample is compared with the
same nitrocellulose sample of standard viscosity.
Dry time-An important test is 'blooming‘ or whitening, when it dries in
a cool, humid environment .
Spray-It should atomise and flow well.
11. NC Thinner properties
In our country, due to the dusty environment, it is critical for painted
surfaces to dry very fast to avoid dust pickup on the paint film.
It is a quick drying property of our thinners that has prompted a
number of quality.
Paint mixed with it dries faster and with good adhesion.
It helps in creating uniform thickness of the paint film.
12. characteristics
Consistency – Blends perfectly to reduce the lacquer to the required
consistency and degree. Greatly improves film evenness and
smoothness of the lacquer.
Finishing – As the admixed lacquer is sprayed or dipped, the
excellent finish is conspicuous.
Resistance to Blushing – The lacquer seamlessly dries without
undergoing blush. The NC thinner also does not leave a milky effect
on the surface.
13. Characteristics
Effect of Evaporation – The evaporation of the NC thinner
enhances the tensile strength of the film along with the gloss it
produces
Reaction to Surface Defects – The NC thinner in the lacquer
thoroughly helps to mask resin blush, pin holing and other surface
defects. After the lacquer is coated to the surface, the NC thinner
evaporates without leaving any orange peel.
14. Application and uses
NC Thinner goes well with Wood and
Automotive NC Topcoats that are clear and
pigmented.
The thinner is suitable for humidity prone
regions also due to its anti-blushing properties
under high humid conditions.
On the wooden surface, they are flawless on
Melamine wood finishes.
15. Applications and uses
Excess usage can result in over-thinning of the
Wood and Automotive NC Topcoats.
Used in natural wood, wood substitutes like
plywood, particles board, fiberboard etc.
It is manufactured for reduce lacquers before
being utilized in different methods.
