Editor's Notes
Hello, Everybody, thanks for coming, I hope everybody is doing well, I am very excited to present in front of you all. Let’s begin, My name is Puspa Kafley, I am from Nepal, and my intended major is Computer Science.
Today, I ONLY have 3 things to talk to you about: First, Academic Enhancement, Second, Civic Entrepreneurial Leadership, and third Personal Growth.
First let me talk about what I did little bit before I start about academic enhancement. Past 8 weeks, I have taken more notes than ever before, I have step out of my comfort zone more than ever before, For example, talking to strangers and just going to random buildings, therefore, result of doing those things, I have been presented with more opportunity to learn about Appalachia and Entrepreneurship then I could have imagined.
So, some of the materials we used past 8 weeks are Hillbilly Elegy, Who owns the ice house?, Entrepreneurial Strenghsfinder, Danial Boone and the opening of the American west movies and much more. First we watched a movie about Daniel Boone and his journey of the opening of the American west, from that movie we learned about culture and history about the Appalachian region. Secondly, we read a book Hillbilly Elegy by JD Vance, who talked and wrote his perspective about his life as a Hillbilly in Appalachia. Third, we read a book about entrepreneurial Strenghsfinder, which talked about the characteristics of entrepreneurs and lastly we read a book about Uncle Cleve who recognized a opportunity to own the ice house and be successful at doing it.
Now let’s talk about Appalachia itself, The most significant new insight I gained during the EPG Institute is about the Appalachian Region itself and the issues that the region is facing currently. The Learning happened when our group was assigned to go to Rockcastle county and talk to people and observe as it is. By talking to the people in that county, and understanding their living conditions. After talking to many people as a group, I, personally got a sense of hopelessness, because many people were complaining about jobs, transportation, living condition, and overall things to do in their community, however, there were people who are working there to make those community better and bring that hope back again.
Now let’s talk about key concepts, During these past 8 weeks, we have been introduced to many significant concepts, but these 10 were the most important to me personally, and I won’t read all of them, but I would like to focus on these three concepts, Business Model Canvas, Growth V. fixed mindset, and Putting yourself in the shoes of bikers/hikers and talk in depth about it.
Business model canvas was used to come up with the solution during our Awesome Hiking Experience where we created persona, interviewed people, came upon a problem, and used business model canvas to come with rehikxe, our solution that won first prize.
Secondly, I have used Growth v. Fixed mindset TED talk lesson personally, there were sometime during EPG where I find It difficult to solve or understand certain task because of the ambiguity, and I used growth mindset to tell myself,…. I Can do this, or it’s difficult… and just being able to talk to people.
Lastly, the concept of putting yourself in the shoes of bikers comes from creeper trail, we went Damascus to experience biking. But for me, something unforeseen happened, after biking for 27mile, my bike broke and I had to walk for 3 miles, even though it was unfortunate event, but something happened while I was walking, I begin to think, “is this how hiking feels? Why would someone just walk for miles and miles in nowhere….THIS IS CRAZY…but then I also realized it makes sense if they love nature so much and want to discover themselves, then it’s very good place, because it’s very quite (It’s scary), nature everywhere, I saw snake and deer and one can think and feel whatever one wants, so it makes sense for some people to hike long trails.” After walking for 3miles, Dr. Hackbert came and saved me! so I had both biking and hiking experience. However, this experience was critical for our project because it helped me and I assume other understand the agony that the cyclist go through every day. In addition, It helped us understand the things that cyclist might need on the road. The experience put us in the shoes of bikers.
Now, let’s look at how I was and am before and after EPG, I am using Kolb learning style because it perfectly shows before and after EPG learning style that I have gained. Before, I knew about being adaptable, being practical, being logical, getting things done, and solving problems, as a computer science major I have to have that skills. But after working with 4 awesome lovely people for past 8 weeks it really helped me understand the part of team working. It helped me be more imaginative, understand people better, brainstorming , planning, and being patient. The possible reason as to why I didn’t have these skills where because I had never worked in a team for this long before, and I had lack of information about Business model, brainstorming, design thinking. And EPG has helped immensely.
Now let me tell you about my personal theory and what I would tell new students about how epg is designed to reveal and practice entrepreneurial leadership, and it would include being able to face ambiguity and uncertainty because every step of the summer institute, we dealt with ambiguity and uncertainty. Like literally every step of it, so I think it is really important that entrepreneurial leaders know how to face ambiguity and uncertainty head on and EPG teaches one that really well. Because, Dr. Hackbert makes sure that everybody is able to face ambiguity and uncertainty by the end of EPG.
Now let focus on civic entrepreneurial leadership, in other word, what we did this summer in the Appalachian region.
Even though, we had so many projects and homework as you know, but our main goal that we as a group were trying to accomplish was Boone trace trail map for cyclist that goes through Boonesborough to Cumberland gap. As you can see above that’s the final product.
Why does it matter? Why do college student care about making a map? Or why do college student care about bringing cyclist through Boone trace trail? Well there are three reasons. First, Economic benefits, after creating a decent map then the cyclist will start coming through those small counties and will spend their dineros and that way it will help on developing a better economy for those counties.
Second, Mood of transportation of locals will change because of the trail….
And third, their health care cost would go down, as the result of local people using it for running or biking, they don’t have to spend as much money on their health care.
Also, As we saw a case example in Abingdon and Damascus, VA about how their economy boosted and how local people started using it after opening the creeper trail that connects from Damascus to Abingdon.
Ok, now let’s focus on Public Good, past 8 weeks, traveling and interviewing people from different paths of life have opened my eyes to see what public good other people are doing. Even though, as a EPG student it’s our primary job to help community, but there are some people who are doing a lot more for their own community then we are doing. For example, in Livingston, Larry Davidson, he’s an example of a person who’s trying to bring hope back to the counties. He’s a business men who’s dedicating his time to bring adventure tourism in Livingston and is opening a Rockcastle Outdoor Company. Even in Virginia, entrepreneurs that we talked to in bobo’s restaurants are an example of people who are doing public good, because they are putting their time, money, sweat, and efforts to bring something good in their community.
Now, let’s talk about my personal action plan or my personal business model for next semester. This fall semester, I will be working at integrated marketing and communication department. My customers will be Berea College itself, and the faculty members. I will maintain my relationships with them though face-to-face meeting and emails. I will promote the things I will be doing though emails and face-to-face talk. I will provide them with speedy completion of task, and flexibility. My key activities will be to build websites and manage web content for the college. My key partners will be the staff at my work and cost structure is time and lot of work. And lastly, my Revenue is labor income, free tuition, and satisfaction.
Not let’s focus on personal growth
Before, Epg begin, I had some idea as to how hard or difficult the course will be and it was. But one assumptions that I had was wrong, was that it was going to be SCARY that I have to have an idea in order to do something or that I will be judged based on my ideas. But after a week I learned otherwise. I learned something completely opposite and that was even if one has an idea then they are not judged based on that, even if that idea fails, because as we learned “failure instructs.”
If I were given the opportunity to do something again, I would LOVE to do all the adventures that we took over the past 8 weeks. For example, riding bikes on creeper trail, but I would not like to fall off the bike though, hiking natural bridge, hiking new Denial Boone trace trail, going to Rocketboys house, hiking pinnacles, hiking on the rain. Because all these things gave us the opportunity to laugh, understand, fear, enjoy, and bond together as a cohort.
Personally, the most significant events for me was having the opportunity to network with people because that allowed me to connect with them, understand them, and learn from them. The stories that those people shared inspired me to achieve something that is quite hard to achieve and do what you’re passionate about because they did that. Especially, talking with Larry Davidson, I had never seen such enthusiasm, pride, and passion for betterment of his community then ever before. And that really inspired me to chase something that I am passionate about.
So what will be my Next step, after acquiring such knowledge about entrepreneurship. Well, I don’t know quite yet…however, I do have some idea.
I plan to start looking for voluenteer work, start looking for internships just so that I know what I want to do, so that I don’t waste time during my semester searching for it. I just want to be prepared with internships so that I can just finish off the applications during the semesters.
I am planning on going to start-up weekends and network with people that come from different paths of life and share ideas.
That’s all I have!!!
Thank You
