2. Introduction:
• Ginger used for the treatment of numerous ailments such as cold
,nausea, arthritis and hypertension.
• It contains Antioxidants. It may help with cancer.
• It helps to improve the circulation of the scalp which promotes
natural hair growth.
• Now we have to see about nutrient and water management in
ginger.
3. Nutrient management in ginger:
• Ginger needs essential macro nutrients such as nitrogen,
phosphorous and potassium.
• Micronutrients such as zinc, copper and Iron.
• Farmers can apply organic manure, compost or inorganic fertilizers
depending on nutrient status of soil.
• In zinc deficient soils basal application of upto 6kg zinc/ha gives
good yield.
4. Nutrient management in ginger:
• A balanced application of fertilizers can improve soil fertility and
support robust ginger growth.
• The recommended dose of fertilizer for ginger is 75kgN;50KgP2O5 and
50Kg K2O per ha.
• Mulching also an excellent method for providing additional nutrients to
the soil.Farmers can use hay for mulching.
• Crop rotation is an effective technique for reducing soil borne disease
and improving soil fertility.
• Therefore nutrient management is important for ginger growth and
yield.
5. Water management in ginger:
• Ginger grows well in both under rainfed and irrigated conditions.
• This crop performs well in a temperature range of 19’c- 28’c and a
humidity of 70-90%.
• Ginger thrives best in well drained soils like sandy loam, clay
loam,red loam or lateritic loam.
• A friable loam with a PH of 6.0 to 6.5 rich in humus is ideal. For
successful cultivation of crop, moderate rainfall at sowing time till
rhizomes sprout.
• Climate and soil plays an important role in ginger cultivation.
6. Water management in ginger:
• Ginger cultivated as rainfed crop in high rainfall areas and as
irrigated crop in less rainfall areas.
• Ginger requires 1300-1500 mm of water during its crop cycle.
• Critical stages for irrigation are during germination, rhizome
initiation and rhizome development stages.
• The moisture content of fresh ginger at harvest is about 80-82%
which brought down upto 10% for safe storage.
• Sprinklers and drip irrigation system can also be employed for
better water use efficiency and enhanced yield.
7. Suitable seasons for ginger:
• Best time for planting ginger in west coast of India is during the
first fortnight of May with receipt of pre monsoon showers.
• Under irrigated conditions,it can be planted well in advance
during middle of February or early March.
• Early planting with receipt of summer showers during February-
March results in higher yield and reduces disease incidence.
• “Varada” is suited for fresh ginger, dry ginger and making candy.
• “IISR Rejatha”is rich in essential oil.
