My native town inspired great Russians to
create their masterpieces.
Ivan Sergeevich Turgenev
 The famous Russian writer Ivan Turgenev liked to visit
horse fairs which were held in Lebedyan. In the 19th
century Lebedyan was famous all over Russia for those
fairs. Turgenev wrote his novel “Lebedyan” about the
fairs. The novel was originally illustrated by the
outstanding Russian artist Peter Sokolov. He also visited
our town and painted “Horse fair in Lebedyan”, the
picture which is now exhibited in the State Tretyakov
Gallery.
Evgeny Ivanovich Zamyatin
 Evgeny Zamyatin is probably one of our
most famous townsman. He was born in
Lebedyan in 1884. His parents were very
intelligent people. His father was a
preacher(священник) and his mother was
fond of piano music and classical literature.
Zamyatin became a talented writer. His
revolutionary novel “We” is known in Russia
and abroad.
Boris Michaylovich Kustodiev
 In the summer of 1926 Evgeny Zamyatin who was
born in Lebedyan invited his friend, an artist Boris
Kustodiev to visit our town. It happened to be the
last but the happiest summer in his life. Zamyatin
wrote that he had never seen his friend so happy.
Kustodiev spoke of Lebedian as of the heart of
Russia. Everything here – the hills, the churches,
the Don, apples, geese, grass in the streets – is
native to a Russian.
While in Lebedian, Kustodiev created many
beautiful paintings which are inspired by our town.
Konstantin Nikolaevich Igumnov
 The Igumnovs are well-known in Lebedyan.
Konstantin Igumnov was an outstanding
pianist and a professor of the Moscow
Conservatory who founded one of the most
famous piano schools in Russia. The rest of
the family are probably not so famous but
people in Lebedyan honour them for their
good deals for the town.
