PROFINET Network
Components
PROFINET Networks consist of several discrete items
of apparatus:-
IO Controllers (IOC’s) – The devices actually
controlling the communications – these are
usually PLC’s.
IO Devices (IOD’s) – These are the plant-based
devices that the IOC is communicating with.
They may be remote IO, Invertor drives,
encoders etc.
Switches – These are used to connect the IOC’s
with the IOD’s.
Monitoring Tools – Essential for the qualification
and support of your network
Gateways – These are used to connect to other
network types, e.g. PROFIBUS, AS-I, CAN or IOT
(OPC-UA/MQTT)

Gateways and Couplers
PROFINET Gateways and Couplers are physical devices that
facilitate communication between two separate industrial
networks, at least one of which will be PROFINET.
PROFINET Gateways generally act as a IO device on the
PROFINET side and as a controlling device (Master) on the sub
network.
PROFINET Couplers generally interface two separate networks,
each having their own IO Controller or Master.
On the PROFINET side, the gateway will appear as an IO Device
and will have a GSDML file, to allow it to be incorporated into
the hardware configuration of an IO Controller (PLC).
Gateways are available for a wide range of network
combinations including PROFIBUS (DP), PROFIBUS (PA), AS-i,
CanBUS, IO Link and many more.

PN-PN Coupler Configuration
The GSDML file of the coupler needs to be
added to the hardware configuration of the
IO Controller in each network.
The device must be given a device name and
IP address.
The modules on each side appear as inputs
and outputs of varying sizes.
Output channels on one side must match
input channels on another.

PROFINET – PROFIBUS DP
Coupler
A PROFINET to PROFIBUS DP Coupler facilitates bi-directional
communication between a PROFINET Network and a PROFIBUS DP
network.
It will be supplied with a GSDML file and a GSD file for
incorporation into the respective Hardware Configuration of the
IO Controller and PROFIBUS Master respectively.
The PROFIBUS DP side of the gateway will need a slave address.

PROFINET – PROFIBUS PA
Gateways
A PROFINET to PROFIBUS PA Gateways facilitates bi-directional
communication between a PROFINET Network and a PROFIBUS PA
network.
Here, the Gateway is acting as a PA Master on the PA side.
The configuration of these devices is a little more time-
consuming as it requires the creation on an application-specific
GSDML file.

PN-PB PA Configuration
An application-specific GSDML file needs to be created for
inclusion in the Hardware Configuration of the PROFINET IO
Controller. This maps PA GSD files with PN slots.

PROFINET – AS-i Gateways
PROFINET to AS-i Gateways facilitate bi-directional
communications between a PROFINET network and an AS-I
Network.
They are available as a stand-alone PN-AS-i Master or as a
module that plugs into a PLC rack.
Stand-alone devices must be supplied with a GSDML file for
inclusion in the Hardware Configuration of the IO Controller
on the PROFINET side.

PN-AS-I Configuration
AS-I Gateways are easier to configure
than those associated with higher-
level networks like PROFINET and
PROFIBUS.
This is because AS-i devices do not
have any form of device description
file.
Stand—alone PROFINET-AS-i gateways
work on the principle of mapping a
module slot number on the PN side
with an AS-i address (1-31).
PLC AS-I modules simply need to know
the number of individual AS-i devices
they will communicate with and the
address of each device.

PROFINET – IO-LINK Gateways

communications between a PROFINET network and an IO-Link
Network.

plugs into a PLC rack.

IIoT Gateways
IIoT Gateways (Industrial Internet
of Things) are devices that
facilitate the transfer of non-real
time data between an operational
network (OT) ,like PROFINET, and
an IT network.
The main uses of IIoT is either for
machine-machine or machine-
cloud data communication.
Two of the most common
protocols currently used by IIoT
applications are OPC-UA (Unified
Architecture) and MQTT (Message
Queuing Telemetry Transport)
Many PLCs and PROFINET
diagnostic tools support OPC-UA
and MQTT.

Demonstration
A new Gateway has come onto the
market that allows a PROFINET IO
Controller to control PROFIBUS DP
Slaves.
It is called a GW PN/DP 1E/1DB9
from Phoenix Contact.
It is a din-rail-mounted device
requiring 24v dc supply and has two
interfaces, one for PROFINET and
one for PROFIBUS DP.
This is not the same as the PN/DP
coupler mentioned earlier in that
this devices acts as a PROFOBUS
Class 1 Master.
