Essay On The Movie Rain Man
Abstract This paper will show how in the movie Rain Man, an adult man acts with high functioning autism. How great certain skills are that make him
appear as if he has supermen abilities, while also showing the need for adult supervision for other events that unfold in the movie. While sourcing
several references what autism is, its characteristics and how to treat it at an early age to get the best functional outcome as an adult. Along with some
of dangers that's face people with autism from the world around them and my own personal reflections on interacting with people with autism. Rain

In addition to the social communication deficits, the diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder requires the presence of restricted, repetitive patterns of
behavior, interests, or activities" (American Psychiatric Association, 2013, p. 69). A common disorder associated with autism is Obsessive
compulsive disorder(OCD). People with OCD have to do things at certain way each time and with Raymond, he has a ritualist way of doing certain
things (Kearny & Trull, 2015). Raymond fits the bill to a tee, that he is a high functioning Autistic adult that has some unique skills and interesting
inclinations. A big question that has been raised, is autism a result of biological or environmental influences? People have been debating this for the
better part of the last two decades. There was even a debate in one of classes in collage on how people get autism. An article from the National
Center for Biotechnology Information states its nature and you are born with these unique tendencies (Strathearn, 2009). As an Occupational Therapy
Assistant(OTA) that works with children with this disorder I have to agree it is nature. A great example from work is two brother, they have great
parents who did all the right things when it came to having them but both of them have a diagnosis of autism. They are really cool boys one of them
even has a great aptitude to draw really great portraits of his classmates during his free time. Based on the article mentioned earlier and my open

Autistic Disorder: Savant syndrome
The Hollywood film Rain Man is about the Autistic disorder Savant syndrome. In Rain Man, Raymond Babbitt (played by Dustin Hoffman) has
Savant Syndrome and his brother Charlie Babbitt (played by Tom Cruise) finds out about Raymond being his brother and that he is good with
numbers so Charlie decides to use his brother to make money. Over the course of the time that Charlie and Raymond are together, they become closer
and Charlie is not just using Raymond for money. Hollywood portrays Savant syndrome accurately compared to what the APA says about Savant.

Savant itself is not possible to treat or cure because it is not a disorder. There is also no cure for autism or one–size–fits–all treatment. However, there
are three ways that doctors can help people with autism function closer to normal. One way is behavioral and communication therapies, which address
social, language, behavior and social problems. Drug therapies cannot hit the core of autism but drugs can help mask some of the symptoms, such as
hyperactivity, while other drugs control repetitive or aggressive behavior. The third possible treatment for the symptoms of autism is complementary
approaches. Instead of medical or educational therapies, parents may often use art or music therapy. This focuses on the patient's extreme sense of
sound or touch. Many people choose to do complementary therapies even though there is no scientific proof that these treatments work (Mayo Clinic
Staff).
Savant syndrome is extremely rare, but people with autism are more likely to have savant than people without autism. If your parents have autism,
you are 5% more likely to have a form of autism (DSM, 2000 p 73). Yet, only 10% of people with autism will have some form of savant and less than
1% of non–autistic people have savant (Stephen M. Edelson, Ph.D.). Although savant syndrome is extremely rare, autism is

in direct conflict with the nature of the syndrome. People that suffer from the syndrome have varying degrees of developmental disabilities, but the

in 2009. Peek had an incredible number of things memorized. He memorized over six thousand books, all the United States area codes, and major
city zip codes. Peek possessed the ability to read at a rapid pace and even simultaneously read one page with his left eye, and the other page with his

The Rain Man stars Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise. The movie was made in 1988. The movie is about an autistic man named Raymon, who is a
idiot savant played by Dustin Hoffman and his fast, talking self absorbed, egocentric brother Charlie Babbitt, who is played by Tom Cruise. A
egocentric person is a person with the simple recognition that every living thing views the world from a unique, self–oriented perspective(LIFE:

have fallen to the ground. First he mumbles 82 then he mumbles quietly for some time and says there are 246 toothpicks on the ground, as they're
walking away Charlie asks the waitress how many toothpicks there are in the box. She says 250, then says there are 4 left in the box. This is where
you first realize that Raymond isn't just mentally disabled but is a idiot savant. This is a rare condition where people with severe mental handicaps
have a spectacular ability in one skill or area.
Half way through the trip Charlie decides to take Raymon to a doctor to actually find out what is really up with him. When Charlie is done filling out
the forms he hands them to the nurse and she reads it and says, 'is he artistic';, Charlie says ,'no he is Autistic';. Autism is the developmental disorder,

Barry Levinson brings us a Raymond, very moving character in the movie Raymond Babbitt. Raymond is a grown man that is Autistic. Raymond may
be grown up but he lacks certain sociable skills, making communication very difficult. He has a hard time understanding and answer questions.
Because of Raymond's handicap he is unable to progress into a new person. Raymond's limitations give the movie boundaries. Levinson uses the idea of
not allowing this character to change to affect the other characters in this story. The character that is most affected is Raymond's brother,Charlie. At the
beginning Charlie is frustrated and short on cash, his father has died and Charlie received no inheritance, his father had left it all to Charlie's unknown

Raymond's requirements, such as watching TV shows are certain times, being asleep by a certain time, seating odd amounts of food and need for
attention to make sure he doesn't get hurt. Charlie starts to get to know Raymond, and the more he does the more Charlie changes. Charlie
completely alters his lifestyle to provide for Raymond. At the beginning when Charlie is still getting to know Raymond they to out for breakfast
and there is no syrup on the table, and this is not what Raymond is used to. He always had the syrup on the table before they got the pancakes.
Raymond makes a be deal about it and Charlie tries to tell him that they will bring the syrup with the pancakes but Raymond doesn't like this and
creates and issue about it. Charlie is frustrated by this is doesn't understand. This is another example of how Charlie is not able to change, he is used
the repetition and a set procedure. If Charlie is going to get along with his brother he is going to have to adapt.
Charlie ends up spending about a week living with Raymond, getting to know him learning his likes and dislikes, his habits and so on. Every place

people were institutionalized for this neurological condition. At a time there

Part One (Plot Summary) "Rain Man" directed by Barry Levinson was released in 1988.The story of this movie takes place in the United States
(Cincinnati, Ohio) in 1988. Similar to John Steinbeck's Of Mice And Men, the story of this movie is about friendship between two unequal men(one
mentally challenged and the other, normal) that are on a journey and their friendship, but opposite to the story of the novel, the film has a happy
ending. One day, Charley, who is a successful business man, receives word that his father, a man with whom he had not spoken in years, had died
back in Cincinnati, Ohio. He returns to his childhood home to take care of his father's property, only to find out that virtually all of his dad's...show more

After his journey with Charley, he learns to joke, and for the first time in his life, he allows physical contact with another human being. His final
two scenes with Charlie are touching. When faced with the prospect of leaving his younger brother, we can see his inner struggle. Yet he can't
express his feelings. Part Three (Technical Devices) In this move, camera work plays a very important role. Since there are lots of emotional
events in this story, camera work has to be able to transfer these emotions to the viewers. In fact this movie contains a rich camera work. The
distance of camera, the angle and the way that camera moves toward the characters are significantly well done, because we can see all the changes
that occur on face of each character. These make the movie to be more impressive and interesting. The main music of this movie also plays an
important role. Since it is calm and soft, it fits with the pictures of the movie perfectly. Specially, when two brothers dance together, hug and touch
each other, music makes the movie to be completely effective. The main music of this movie is successful, because it contains both sadness and
happiness, and since the theme of the movie carries both sadness and happiness, it makes the movie to be more interesting. Since the movie released
in 1988, its main music has become very popular, and people know that as "Rain Man". Part Four (Literary Device) The title of this

Rain Main Rain Man, a film about an exceptional person, portrays the life of Raymond Babbot and his struggle to be understood and loved by his
brother Charlie Babbot. This academy award–winning drama stars two incredibly talented actors – Tom Cruise (Charlie) and Dustin Hoffman
(Raymond). These two brothers, separated at a young age by Raymond's exceptional condition, find themselves later in life brought together by their
father's death. The movie grabs the heart of it's audience in an attempt to bring together the life of the "exceptional" person with that of the "normal"
mainstream life.

This is a problem usually categorized by a problem with communicating, learning, and expression of one's self. Raymond has an extensive routine
which he follows daily from the times of television shows he watches, to bed times, to food he eats, to the exact arrangement of his room. Anything
interfering with this exact routine makes Raymond extremely nervous. He also has trouble making decisions with the repeated line "I don't know."
Though Charlie first thinks Raymond to be stupid, retarded, and a complete idiot, he later finds Raymond to be an utter genius with numbers and
statistics – basically anything to do with order and arrangement.
Excited about having a brother and the opportunity to get the money left by his dad, Charlie kidnaps Raymond from WallBrook. Very quickly Charlie
gets disgusted with Raymond and unwilling to accept that he doesn't understand some things. Because of this and the fact that Charlie has such an
inability to understand others because of his own selfishness, Charlie's girlfriend leaves him.
Then begins Charlie and Raymond's infamous trip to California. This part is where I believe the author is intending to introduce inclusion of
exceptional people into the mainstream, normal life. All of the sudden Raymond is thrown unexpectedly into everyday situations. Immediately Charlie
begins to find out just what a tremendous schedule and time frame Raymond must be on. This

The movie Rain man is about Raymond and Charlie Babbitt. Charlie is very self centered and is greedy with his money. Charlie lives in California
and is very secluded from his family. Charlie and Raymond father dies and he is only left rosebushes and a car in the will. He goes back to Cincinnati
to figure out who receives the money from the will.
Charlie finds out the money from his father's will is going to a mental institution where Raymond, his brother, stays. Charlie had forgotten about
Raymond over the years after he moved away from his family, because Raymond had left when Charlie was very young. Throughout the course of
his adult life he had forgot almost all memories of his brother, and his childhood in general. There are multiple points in the movie Raymond does
something to causes Charlie to remember things from their childhood. Charlie thought that he had an imaginary friend named Rain Man. The name
Rain Man came from the way Raymond pronounced his name at a young age. After he finds out about his brother is inheriting a majority of the
will, Charlie wants to take custody of Raymond. He takes him on a road trip back to Los Angeles, so he can meet with his lawyers to take custody of
Raymond. In the end of the movie they start to decide what is going to happen to Charlie and Raymond, but they leave the movie on a cliffhanger and
he dont find out if Charlie and Raymond get to stay together. There are many symptoms of autism based on the severity of the autism a person has.
Some symptoms are a need for routine, problems forming relationships, and learning disabilities. Raymond exhibits many symptoms of autism.
Raymond does not show his emotions, unless he's in distress. He has photographic memory and is able remember almost anything he has seen, but he
doesn't have much understanding of the things he remembers. He's also extremely good at math and counting, he can do complex math problems in
his head in only a few seconds. Raymond is portrayed as an autistic savant in the film, because he isn't smart in some areas but extremely smart in
another. He also shows an intense need for routine. Raymond has high functioning autism, he's able to

Descriptive Essay On Rain
It's cool and dark outside of the car as we drive, dark clouds hovering over the plains as fat, heavy drops of water fall from the full clouds. The lights
of cars and streetlights and cars blur with the flow of water on the side windows, our speed not fast enough to force the drops to flow back along
the windows. It's not until we start on the highway and the water starts to move that I find my objects of interest in front of me in the form of the
rain and the memories of my childhood that surface with them. The rain on the windshield was and still is pleasant to watch. The way the drops
clump together and make small rivers that travel up the window before being slashed at by the windshield wiper. It's calming to watch the water
move as it wants, making new trails as the wind fights to push the raindrops upwards. It reminds me of a sort of game I used to play when I was
little and watched the rain run across the windows. I used to always imagine that the rain that gathered at the bottom of the window near the wiper
motors where all the little water people that needed to get away because they were trapped there unless they could collect into a big fat drop that
could carry them out of reach of the wipers when it went by. I always imagined that they were escaping to little space pods that would bring them
to the outer edge of the window that I considered to be outer space where it was safe, and the side windows as the paths they had to take to get
home. When I was young this little game would entertain me on long car rides. I was never fond of the windshield wipers. The way the black arms
would come to push away all the escaping water, cutting off the paths of the little droplets and flinging some away while shoving the rest back into the
bottom of the window. As a child, it made me frustrated that it would always ruin the departure of the make–believe escape pods. I hated the sound the
wipers would occasionally make when the window was too dry to give it a slick path to slide over. It was also ugly and reminded me of some sort of
weird arm that was devoid of muscle or flesh, much like a skeleton which was fitting. The windshield wiper represented death and failure of the
hopeful, little traveling droplets;

Rain Man Analysis
Rain Man In the movie Rain Man that was released in 1988 is about a character named Charlie Babbitt and his understanding of his brother
Raymond Babbitt who suffers from autism. Autism is profound impairment of social interaction and communication and severely restricted
interests and activities, usually apparent by the age of 3. A few of Raymond's qualities, that at first upset his brother when they met, was his lack
of eye contact and lack of facial expressions which is classified as normal with autistic children and adults. Also Charlie's first encounter with
Raymond (at the mental institute Wallbrook where Raymond was admiring his fathers car) we first heard him use what is called "echolalia," this
is where people with autism often repeat over and over a phrase they have heard previously, in Raymond's case he kept repeating the "who's on
first" from the comedians Abbot and Costello, doing this helps calm his nervousness. Failure to establish close bonds with people ones own age
was something Raymond had difficulty with. Vern was one of Raymond's therapists at Wallbrook and he mentioned that people aren't Raymond's
first priority. He would not notice if Vern was gone which is saying a lot because Raymond and Vern are very close, Raymond calls him his "main
man." It was a struggle for Raymond to connect with people, even a simple hug set him over the edge. When Raymond feels threatened or afraid or
his routine is not right he will go into a state of

Make–Up Assignment: Super–memorizers
Memory, in an average person, is far from a perfect video playback. Storing memories requires a process of encoding, storage, and retrieval. For most
of us, our memories are limited by the efficiency of storage and the accuracy of retrieval. But for those with savant syndrome and highly superior
autobiographical memory, it is theorized that these limitations can be bypassed resulting in extraordinarily accurate or seemingly infinite memory.
Savant syndrome is characterized by seemingly innate ability that far surpasses normal human capacity manifested in a specialized skill such as rapid
calculation, memorization, or musical ability though usually accompanied by mental disability. Kim Peek, credited as the inspiration for the movie
Rain Man, was diagnosed with FG syndrome characterized by intellectual disability, hyperactivity, and low muscle tone. In addition to FG, Peek was
born without a corpus callosum and secondary hemispherical connections. One of his most notable abilities was his exceptional declarative memory,
with the ability to recall entire books in a single read through. It is thought that his abilities may be associated with his split hemispheres, allowing him
to process immense amount of information in parallel. Daniel Tammet is a notable Asperger's syndrome savant with remarkable numerical...show more

Perception and encoding of information in a novel way through synesthesia would theoretically act as form of deeper semantic processing that is both
easier to retrieve and more durable in memory. Evidence of the use of multiple brain regions in super–memorizers could explain both a larger capacity

Perhaps more importantly, it is believed they have little understanding of their own emotions, or the emotions of other people. There is a wide range of
autism that exists. Some people are so autistic they can almost do nothing for themselves, and are completely dependent on others for their everyday
needs. There are other autistics that are considered "high functioning," and thus are able to do much on their own, although they may still be better off
living in institutions that care for the mentally disabled. Still other autistics are what are called "idiot savants," in that they have the ordinary
limitations of most autistics, but they also have special mental skills that are reflective of pure genius. For example, in the case of Raymond, he
appears to have both the memory and basic math abilities of a computer, not a person. Autism is a neurological disorder that affects a child's ability to
communicate, understand language, play, and relate to others. A diagnosis of autistic disorder is made when an individual displays 6 or more of 12
symptoms listed across three major areas: social interaction, communication, and behavior. Some psychologists and psychiatrists go by the
"Mind–Blindness" theory, which basically asserts that an autistic person can't, by nature, understand what another person is going through or what
another person might be thinking. According to the theory, autistic people only

Essay On The Movie Rain Man

  • 1. Essay On The Movie Rain Man Abstract This paper will show how in the movie Rain Man, an adult man acts with high functioning autism. How great certain skills are that make him appear as if he has supermen abilities, while also showing the need for adult supervision for other events that unfold in the movie. While sourcing several references what autism is, its characteristics and how to treat it at an early age to get the best functional outcome as an adult. Along with some of dangers that's face people with autism from the world around them and my own personal reflections on interacting with people with autism. Rain Man Autism is an interesting diagnosis specially when first encountered it with a young child screaming cause they enjoying the sound...show more content... In addition to the social communication deficits, the diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder requires the presence of restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, or activities" (American Psychiatric Association, 2013, p. 69). A common disorder associated with autism is Obsessive compulsive disorder(OCD). People with OCD have to do things at certain way each time and with Raymond, he has a ritualist way of doing certain things (Kearny & Trull, 2015). Raymond fits the bill to a tee, that he is a high functioning Autistic adult that has some unique skills and interesting inclinations. A big question that has been raised, is autism a result of biological or environmental influences? People have been debating this for the better part of the last two decades. There was even a debate in one of classes in collage on how people get autism. An article from the National Center for Biotechnology Information states its nature and you are born with these unique tendencies (Strathearn, 2009). As an Occupational Therapy Assistant(OTA) that works with children with this disorder I have to agree it is nature. A great example from work is two brother, they have great parents who did all the right things when it came to having them but both of them have a diagnosis of autism. They are really cool boys one of them even has a great aptitude to draw really great portraits of his classmates during his free time. • 4. Autistic Disorder: Savant syndrome The Hollywood film Rain Man is about the Autistic disorder Savant syndrome. In Rain Man, Raymond Babbitt (played by Dustin Hoffman) has Savant Syndrome and his brother Charlie Babbitt (played by Tom Cruise) finds out about Raymond being his brother and that he is good with numbers so Charlie decides to use his brother to make money. Over the course of the time that Charlie and Raymond are together, they become closer and Charlie is not just using Raymond for money. Hollywood portrays Savant syndrome accurately compared to what the APA says about Savant. Savant is a unique form of autism that has its own special skills, which set Savant apart from all other forms of autism. The most common...show more content... Savant itself is not possible to treat or cure because it is not a disorder. There is also no cure for autism or one–size–fits–all treatment. However, there are three ways that doctors can help people with autism function closer to normal. One way is behavioral and communication therapies, which address social, language, behavior and social problems. Drug therapies cannot hit the core of autism but drugs can help mask some of the symptoms, such as hyperactivity, while other drugs control repetitive or aggressive behavior. The third possible treatment for the symptoms of autism is complementary approaches. Instead of medical or educational therapies, parents may often use art or music therapy. This focuses on the patient's extreme sense of sound or touch. Many people choose to do complementary therapies even though there is no scientific proof that these treatments work (Mayo Clinic Staff). Savant syndrome is extremely rare, but people with autism are more likely to have savant than people without autism. If your parents have autism, you are 5% more likely to have a form of autism (DSM, 2000 p 73). Yet, only 10% of people with autism will have some form of savant and less than 1% of non–autistic people have savant (Stephen M. Edelson, Ph.D.). Although savant syndrome is extremely rare, autism is Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 6. Analysis Of The Film Rain Man Rain Man The media portrays different exceptionalities within different movies. Cinema seems to be one of, if not the most, viewed media resources today and has the largest influence on how different exceptionalities are viewed. Autism spectrum disorder is one of the main exceptionality portrayed in the movie industry. Rain Man established a new standard for the realistic representation of autism. This breakthrough Hollywood film is based on the real–life story of Raymond Babbitt, played by Dustin Hoffman. Hoffman's performance enabled his character to assert his presence with the intensity which helped humanize not only his self–centered brother Charlie, played by Tom Cruise but also the audience. This allowed us to better understand how individuals with autism perceive the world. This success of this file enabled the use of this film as an assessment for measuring how succeeding depictions of autism have changed or remained the same. There are two major aspects of the film that may not have seemed troubling in 1988 when the film premiered but would be found upsetting today as our knowledge of the spectrum disorder has gained strides. In the film, Raymond is portrayed as an autistic savant ("one who combines certain deficiencies in social interaction, language and sensory processing with extraordinary abilities in math and memory"), which created an incorrect stereotype that all individuals with autism are "savant" when, in fact, only around 10% Get more content on HelpWriting.net

People that suffer from the syndrome have varying degrees of developmental disabilities, but the common link is always in the ability to remember massive amounts of information. Kim Peek, the original inspiration for the movie Rain Man, died in 2009. Peek had an incredible number of things memorized. He memorized over six thousand books, all the United States area codes, and major city zip codes. Peek possessed the ability to read at a rapid pace and even simultaneously read one page with his left eye, and the other page with his right eye. This type of reading continued until his death. • 8. The Rain Man Essay The Rain Man The Rain Man stars Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise. The movie was made in 1988. The movie is about an autistic man named Raymon, who is a idiot savant played by Dustin Hoffman and his fast, talking self absorbed, egocentric brother Charlie Babbitt, who is played by Tom Cruise. A egocentric person is a person with the simple recognition that every living thing views the world from a unique, self–oriented perspective(LIFE: Inherently Egocentric written by James Craig Green http://pw2.netcom.com/~zeno7/ego.html). Charlie is a car salesman whose business is going down hill. Charlie and his girlfriend are on their way to Palm Springs when Charlie gets a call from his friend and co–worker. He tells him that his fathers'...show more content... In the mean time Raymon gets up and starts wandering. After Charlie gets Raymon back to his seat he decides to give in and tells the waitress to get them some toothpicks so Raymon can eat. She accidentally drops them when she and Raymon run into each other. He quickly counts how many have fallen to the ground. First he mumbles 82 then he mumbles quietly for some time and says there are 246 toothpicks on the ground, as they're walking away Charlie asks the waitress how many toothpicks there are in the box. She says 250, then says there are 4 left in the box. This is where you first realize that Raymond isn't just mentally disabled but is a idiot savant. This is a rare condition where people with severe mental handicaps have a spectacular ability in one skill or area. Half way through the trip Charlie decides to take Raymon to a doctor to actually find out what is really up with him. When Charlie is done filling out the forms he hands them to the nurse and she reads it and says, 'is he artistic';, Charlie says ,'no he is Autistic';. Autism is the developmental disorder, usually appearing before age three, characterized by impaired non–verbal and verbal communication, including abnormal speech patterns or loss of speech; lack of eye contact; a restricted range of interests; resistance to change of any kind; obsessive repetitive body movements, such as hand flapping or spinning; a lack of awareness of the existence or feelings of others; social Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. Rainman Essay Barry Levinson brings us a Raymond, very moving character in the movie Raymond Babbitt. Raymond is a grown man that is Autistic. Raymond may be grown up but he lacks certain sociable skills, making communication very difficult. He has a hard time understanding and answer questions. Because of Raymond's handicap he is unable to progress into a new person. Raymond's limitations give the movie boundaries. Levinson uses the idea of not allowing this character to change to affect the other characters in this story. The character that is most affected is Raymond's brother,Charlie. At the beginning Charlie is frustrated and short on cash, his father has died and Charlie received no inheritance, his father had left it all to Charlie's unknown ...show more content... In order to obtain this money Charlie finds it necessary to remove Raymond from the institute that is taking care of him and in theory use him as leverage to get the money. In order for Charlie to do this he has to make changes and accommodate for Raymond's needs. Charlie isn't used to Raymond's requirements, such as watching TV shows are certain times, being asleep by a certain time, seating odd amounts of food and need for attention to make sure he doesn't get hurt. Charlie starts to get to know Raymond, and the more he does the more Charlie changes. Charlie completely alters his lifestyle to provide for Raymond. At the beginning when Charlie is still getting to know Raymond they to out for breakfast and there is no syrup on the table, and this is not what Raymond is used to. He always had the syrup on the table before they got the pancakes. Raymond makes a be deal about it and Charlie tries to tell him that they will bring the syrup with the pancakes but Raymond doesn't like this and creates and issue about it. Charlie is frustrated by this is doesn't understand. This is another example of how Charlie is not able to change, he is used the repetition and a set procedure. If Charlie is going to get along with his brother he is going to have to adapt. Charlie ends up spending about a week living with Raymond, getting to know him learning his likes and dislikes, his habits and so on. • 13. Rain Man Journal Part One (Plot Summary) "Rain Man" directed by Barry Levinson was released in 1988.The story of this movie takes place in the United States (Cincinnati, Ohio) in 1988. Similar to John Steinbeck's Of Mice And Men, the story of this movie is about friendship between two unequal men(one mentally challenged and the other, normal) that are on a journey and their friendship, but opposite to the story of the novel, the film has a happy ending. One day, Charley, who is a successful business man, receives word that his father, a man with whom he had not spoken in years, had died back in Cincinnati, Ohio. He returns to his childhood home to take care of his father's property, only to find out that virtually all of his dad's...show more content... After his journey with Charley, he learns to joke, and for the first time in his life, he allows physical contact with another human being. His final two scenes with Charlie are touching. When faced with the prospect of leaving his younger brother, we can see his inner struggle. Yet he can't express his feelings. Part Three (Technical Devices) In this move, camera work plays a very important role. Since there are lots of emotional events in this story, camera work has to be able to transfer these emotions to the viewers. In fact this movie contains a rich camera work. The distance of camera, the angle and the way that camera moves toward the characters are significantly well done, because we can see all the changes that occur on face of each character. These make the movie to be more impressive and interesting. The main music of this movie also plays an important role. Since it is calm and soft, it fits with the pictures of the movie perfectly. Specially, when two brothers dance together, hug and touch each other, music makes the movie to be completely effective. The main music of this movie is successful, because it contains both sadness and happiness, and since the theme of the movie carries both sadness and happiness, it makes the movie to be more interesting. • 14. Rain Main Essay Rain Main Rain Man, a film about an exceptional person, portrays the life of Raymond Babbot and his struggle to be understood and loved by his brother Charlie Babbot. This academy award–winning drama stars two incredibly talented actors – Tom Cruise (Charlie) and Dustin Hoffman (Raymond). These two brothers, separated at a young age by Raymond's exceptional condition, find themselves later in life brought together by their father's death. The movie grabs the heart of it's audience in an attempt to bring together the life of the "exceptional" person with that of the "normal" mainstream life. The Rain Man drama begins with a young man (Charlie) sorting through his acceptance with his father's death, or shall I say basically...show more content... This is a problem usually categorized by a problem with communicating, learning, and expression of one's self. Raymond has an extensive routine which he follows daily from the times of television shows he watches, to bed times, to food he eats, to the exact arrangement of his room. Anything interfering with this exact routine makes Raymond extremely nervous. He also has trouble making decisions with the repeated line "I don't know." Though Charlie first thinks Raymond to be stupid, retarded, and a complete idiot, he later finds Raymond to be an utter genius with numbers and statistics – basically anything to do with order and arrangement. Excited about having a brother and the opportunity to get the money left by his dad, Charlie kidnaps Raymond from WallBrook. Very quickly Charlie gets disgusted with Raymond and unwilling to accept that he doesn't understand some things. Because of this and the fact that Charlie has such an inability to understand others because of his own selfishness, Charlie's girlfriend leaves him. Then begins Charlie and Raymond's infamous trip to California. This part is where I believe the author is intending to introduce inclusion of exceptional people into the mainstream, normal life. All of the sudden Raymond is thrown unexpectedly into everyday situations. Immediately Charlie begins to find out just what a tremendous schedule and time frame Raymond must be on. • 16. Descriptive Essay On Rain It's cool and dark outside of the car as we drive, dark clouds hovering over the plains as fat, heavy drops of water fall from the full clouds. The lights of cars and streetlights and cars blur with the flow of water on the side windows, our speed not fast enough to force the drops to flow back along the windows. It's not until we start on the highway and the water starts to move that I find my objects of interest in front of me in the form of the rain and the memories of my childhood that surface with them. The rain on the windshield was and still is pleasant to watch. The way the drops clump together and make small rivers that travel up the window before being slashed at by the windshield wiper. It's calming to watch the water move as it wants, making new trails as the wind fights to push the raindrops upwards. It reminds me of a sort of game I used to play when I was little and watched the rain run across the windows. I used to always imagine that the rain that gathered at the bottom of the window near the wiper motors where all the little water people that needed to get away because they were trapped there unless they could collect into a big fat drop that could carry them out of reach of the wipers when it went by. I always imagined that they were escaping to little space pods that would bring them to the outer edge of the window that I considered to be outer space where it was safe, and the side windows as the paths they had to take to get home. When I was young this little game would entertain me on long car rides. I was never fond of the windshield wipers. The way the black arms would come to push away all the escaping water, cutting off the paths of the little droplets and flinging some away while shoving the rest back into the bottom of the window. As a child, it made me frustrated that it would always ruin the departure of the make–believe escape pods. I hated the sound the wipers would occasionally make when the window was too dry to give it a slick path to slide over. It was also ugly and reminded me of some sort of weird arm that was devoid of muscle or flesh, much like a skeleton which was fitting. The windshield wiper represented death and failure of the hopeful, little traveling droplets; Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 17. Rain Man Analysis Rain Man In the movie Rain Man that was released in 1988 is about a character named Charlie Babbitt and his understanding of his brother Raymond Babbitt who suffers from autism. Autism is profound impairment of social interaction and communication and severely restricted interests and activities, usually apparent by the age of 3. A few of Raymond's qualities, that at first upset his brother when they met, was his lack of eye contact and lack of facial expressions which is classified as normal with autistic children and adults. Also Charlie's first encounter with Raymond (at the mental institute Wallbrook where Raymond was admiring his fathers car) we first heard him use what is called "echolalia," this is where people with autism often repeat over and over a phrase they have heard previously, in Raymond's case he kept repeating the "who's on first" from the comedians Abbot and Costello, doing this helps calm his nervousness. Failure to establish close bonds with people ones own age was something Raymond had difficulty with. Vern was one of Raymond's therapists at Wallbrook and he mentioned that people aren't Raymond's first priority. He would not notice if Vern was gone which is saying a lot because Raymond and Vern are very close, Raymond calls him his "main man." It was a struggle for Raymond to connect with people, even a simple hug set him over the edge. When Raymond feels threatened or afraid or his routine is not right he will go into a state of Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 18. Rain Man Assignment Make–Up Assignment: Super–memorizers Memory, in an average person, is far from a perfect video playback. Storing memories requires a process of encoding, storage, and retrieval. For most of us, our memories are limited by the efficiency of storage and the accuracy of retrieval. But for those with savant syndrome and highly superior autobiographical memory, it is theorized that these limitations can be bypassed resulting in extraordinarily accurate or seemingly infinite memory. Savant syndrome is characterized by seemingly innate ability that far surpasses normal human capacity manifested in a specialized skill such as rapid calculation, memorization, or musical ability though usually accompanied by mental disability. Kim Peek, credited as the inspiration for the movie Rain Man, was diagnosed with FG syndrome characterized by intellectual disability, hyperactivity, and low muscle tone. In addition to FG, Peek was born without a corpus callosum and secondary hemispherical connections. One of his most notable abilities was his exceptional declarative memory, with the ability to recall entire books in a single read through. It is thought that his abilities may be associated with his split hemispheres, allowing him to process immense amount of information in parallel. Daniel Tammet is a notable Asperger's syndrome savant with remarkable numerical...show more content... • 19. Rain Man Stereotypes The media portrays different exceptionalities within different movies. In the film, Raymond is portrayed as an autistic savant ("one who combines certain deficiencies in social interaction, language and sensory processing with extraordinary abilities in math and memory"), which created an incorrect stereotype that all individuals with autism are "savant" when, in fact, only around 10% actually display Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Perhaps more importantly, it is believed they have little understanding of their own emotions, or the emotions of other people. There is a wide range of autism that exists. Some people are so autistic they can almost do nothing for themselves, and are completely dependent on others for their everyday needs. There are other autistics that are considered "high functioning," and thus are able to do much on their own, although they may still be better off living in institutions that care for the mentally disabled. Still other autistics are what are called "idiot savants," in that they have the ordinary limitations of most autistics, but they also have special mental skills that are reflective of pure genius. For example, in the case of Raymond, he appears to have both the memory and basic math abilities of a computer, not a person. Autism is a neurological disorder that affects a child's ability to communicate, understand language, play, and relate to others. A diagnosis of autistic disorder is made when an individual displays 6 or more of 12 symptoms listed across three major areas: social interaction, communication, and behavior. Some psychologists and psychiatrists go by the "Mind–Blindness" theory, which basically asserts that an autistic person can't, by nature, understand what another person is going through or what another person might be thinking.
