Introduction
Drug information is the provision of written and/or verbal
information about drugs and drug therapy in response to a
request from other healthcare providing organizations,
committees, patients, and public community.
The aim of drug information is necessary to attempt to
document the drugs by gathering information about them.
The information about drugs is collected from wide array of
source which are available in the text books, new research
document, company which make the drugs give broachers and
detailed information through literature, seminars, conferences
Etc
The all compiled information is available for reference purpose
and for answering questions regarding old and new drugs from
doctors and patient.
The first drug information centre is established at university of
Kentucky, US in 1962.
2. Definition:
1.Drug information service( DIS)
It describes activities undertaken by pharmacist in providing
information to optimise drug use.
Example: accurate, unbiased, factual information about drug.
2.Drug Information Centre (DIC)
This are centre which provide drug information related to
therapies, education and research program.
Many centres also provide workshop or training to increase
skills of healthcare professionals.
3.Drug information network ( DIN)
It involves regional DIS which serves given area of country.
This is responsible for a range of issues relating to medicines use
and drug safety. These include monitoring and advising on
prescribing and medicines use in primary and secondary care.
4.Drug information bulletin (DIB)
It publishes latest development in medical science, newly
introduced drug and other information regarding drugs.
Importance of DIB
a. DIB is Link between DIC and health professionals
b. The information of drugs is used by physician, pharmacist
and nurses.
c. It gives information about latest advances in medical
research
d. It publishes matter in question answer session and gives
abstract of new development.
3. Drug information centre in INDIA
The Karnataka State Pharmacy Council (KSPC) established its (DIC)
in August 1997.
In India, this was the first independent DIC started.
Recognizing the need to provide organized drug information to health
care professionals as well as consumers, the WHO in collaboration with
the KSPC is supporting the establishment of 5 DIC.
These centers have been established in,
1. Haryana (Sirsa)
2. Chhattisgarh (Raipur)
3. Rajasthan (Jaipur)
4. Assam (Dibrugarh)
5. Goa (Panaji)
The objectives of DIC are:
1. To provide an organized database of specialized information on
medicines and therapeutics to meet the drug information needs of
practitioners.
2. To educate pharmacy students to serve as effective providers of
medicines information.
3. To provide accurate and unbiased medicines information service to
the pharmacists, physicians and other health care professionals in the
hospital and community.
4. To promote patient care through rational use of medicines

A pharmacist who specializes in the storage, retrieval and dissemination of drug
information to all concerned namely, physicians, nurses and patients.
Drug information specialists are pharmacists who work in drug information
