This document discusses using mushroom as an eco-friendly packaging material. It begins by explaining what eco-friendly packaging is and why mushroom is a good option. The production process involves using agricultural waste and mycelium to produce the material. Mushroom packaging has advantages over traditional styrofoam like being renewable, biodegradable, and better for the environment. The cost is also lower than styrofoam. Applications mentioned include Dell and Philips using it for electronics packaging. The document concludes that mushroom packaging and other biodegradable materials are promising alternatives to conventional plastics.

3. What is Eco-Friendly Packaging?
Packaging material which are friendly to environment of earth.
Such type materials, which are easily bio-degradable, recycle and is
safe for individuals and environment.
It is also known as green packaging.
4. Why Mushroom as a Packaging Material ?
• Basic Packaging Materials are- Plastic, Paper, CFB,
Styrofoam or EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) etc.
• EPS(Expanded polystyrene) are non-biodegradable
materials.
• Production of Styrofoam(EPS) are costly then mushroom
packaging material.

5. PRODUCTION PROCESS :-
• Agriculture waste + Mycellium = Mushroom packaging.
What is mycelium ?
Mycellium is the vegetative part of a mushroom this is a self
assembling natural glue.
.
11. Advantages of Mushroom Packaging Material Over
Styrofoam:-
Styrofoam Mushroom Material
1.)Non-renewable 1.)100% Renewable
2.)Petroleum Based 2.)Bio-based
3.)Non-Compatible 3.) Bio-degradable
4.)High-Energy Cost 4.)Energy Efficient
5.)Environment issue 5.)Beneficial to Environment
6.)Harmful to Humans 6.)Harmless to humans
12. Cost Comparison:-
Estimated Calculations: Expanded Polystyrene Mycofoam
Raw Material. Crude oil: $418.38*/ton Agricultural bioproduct
Mold $2000-100,000 $50-60*/dry ton
Plant and Equipment Injection mold Pasteurising Machine
($100,000-$200,000)
$10,000-50,000
13. Environment Effect:-
• CO2 Foot print and Energy consumption-
Petrochemical extraction +Foam expansion =Conventional insulation(1 cubic meter)
(4667 MJ) (462 MJ)
Mycellium + Agriculture Waste=Mushroom Insulation
(652MJ) (31Kg).
1.5 Litres of Petrol
14. Disadvantages With this Packaging Materials.
Waterproof:-Much like wood,Mushroom materials need to be sealed to be Waterproof.
Food Packaging:-No,Mushroom Materials are not certified for direct food contact at this time
Production Process:- Since,Production process is little bit slow .Hence Large volumes of this material
takes time to grow.
Area for Production:-Since,For the production of Mycofoam Area required is nearly about to 45000
square foot.Very big space we have to need.
15. Applications/Uses
• This Packaging Material used by DELL for packaging of it’s Computer’s
,motherboard and other electronics items.
• Philips also used this as a cushioning material.
• Since, this material replaces EPS,so,it used as a cushioning material
frequently.
16. Introduction to ‘Ecovative’
• Ecovative –”We grow Materials”
• Founded in 2007 by two engineer’s Eben Bayer’s and Gavin
Mclntyre.
Core Mission-To envision ,develop, produce, and market Earth
friendly materials,which unlike conventional synthetics,can have a
positive impact on our planet’s ecosystem.

22. Dell Server Multi Pack
Dell has been leading the electronics industry in
sustainability and is now recognized in the
marketplace for environmentally responsible
packaging. Ecovative designed Mushroom®
Packaging components to replace fabricated EPE-
polyethylene foam parts that provide cushioning
and bracing in large packages for Dell servers. These
packages tip the scales at over 200 lbs, and these
sensitive servers require the utmost protection.
Ecovative's packaging design team worked with
Dell's packaging engineers to create geometries
that would protect the hard drives from
experiencing damaging G loads in the event of a
drop.
RBW’s Monocle Wall Sconces
For Rich Brilliant Willing (RBW), a designer and
manufacturer of LED-based lighting solutions for
architectural interiors based in New York City, it was
important to offer customers a premium product experience,
which meant starting with a great unboxing experience.
“When a customer orders a high-end product, the
manufacturer places a great deal of value on presentation
and making sure the product looks good in its package,”
says Theo Richardson, co-founder and partner of RBW. “The
simplistic nature of Ecovative Mushroom® Packaging was a
perfect complement to our energy-efficient lighting offerings,
and we knew we wanted to be among the first companies to
tell this story and offer such an innovative package.” Ahead
of the first distribution, the company introduced the Ecovative
Mushroom® Packaging solution through its website and
customer newsletter, and enjoyed a featured article
in Packaging World Magazine.
