Plastic pollution and the effects it has on the environment. This slide makes it easier to explain to children and adults too on the effects of plastics pollution.
2. PLASTIC POLLUTION
This is the accumulation of plastic in the environment to
the extent of affecting wildlife habitat or humans.
3. TYPES OF PLASTICS THAT CAUSE POLLUTION
Macro-plastics
They are about 2mm to 5mm
hence can be easily consumed
by animals and species.
Meso & macro
plastics
They are found in packaging,
footwear and other domestic
items
5. 2. Chlorinated plastics can release harmful chemicals
into the soil and ground water. These chemicals can lead
to contamination of drinking water and death of ground
species like worms.
6. 3. Biodegradable plastics release methane
which is a very powerful greenhouse gas,
causing global warming
7. 4. Micro plastics can pollute water bodies by
releasing toxic chemicals like lead, mercury,
biphenyl, polystyrene and cadmium. These
chemicals when taken in by fish can later affect
human beings who consume the fish i.e it can
lead to cancer.
8. 5. Plastics when ingested by animals
can cause injury or poison the animals
9. 6. Floating plastics waste on water body
can interrupt habitat or interfere with
movement of animals
10. 7. Chemicals released by plastic can lead
to reproductive abnormalities in animals
and human
