3.
4. First we Look into the DC motors and its applications and then we move to
AC motors
BRUSHLESS DC MOTORS: In this motor, the mechanical "rotating
switch" or commutator assembly is replaced by an external electronic switch
synchronized to the rotor's position. Brushless motors are typically 85–90%
efficient. These Motors are generally Used in Electric Vehicles ,High Electric
Model Aircrafts, They are also used in laser printers, photo copiers and
computer disk Drives.
5. BRUSHED DC MOTORS:-These are the more traditional type of motor
and are typically used in cost-sensitive applications, where the control
system is relatively simple, such as in consumer applications and more basic
industrial equipment, these type of motors can be broken down as:
1.Series wound 2.Shunt Wound
3.Compound Wound 4.Permanent
6. SERIES WOUND :This is where the field winding is connected in series
with rotor winding and speed control is by varying the supply voltage,
however this type offers poor speed control and as the torque to the motor
increase, then the speed falls . As it has a high starting torque, It is used for
heavy duty applications such as electric locomotives, steel rolling mills, hoists,
lifts and cranes.
7. SHUNT WOUND:-This type has one voltage supply and the field winding is
connected in parallel with the rotor winding and can deliver increased torque,
without a reduction in speed by increasing the motor current. The speed is
practically constant independent of the load and therefore suitable for
commercial applications with a low starting load, such as centrifugal pump,
machine tools, blowers fans, reciprocating pumps , vacuum cleaners etc.
8. COMPOUND WOUND(CWDC):-They are a combination of shunt-wound
and series-wound motors. compound wound motors employ both a series and
a shunt field. The performance of a Compound wound motor is a combination
of shunt and Shunt wound motors. Compound motors have higher torque
than a Shunt motor while offering better speed control than Shunt wound
motor. It is used in Applications such as Rolling mills, sudden temporary loads,
heavy machine tools, punches, etc.
9. PERMANENT MAGNET:- A permanent magnet DC (PMDC) motor is a
motor whose poles are made out of permanent magnets to produce the stator
field. Used in applications where precise control and low torque, such as in
robotics, servo systems.
10. AC MOTORS
SYNCHRONOUS
INDUCTION
(ASYNCHRONOUS)
SYNCHRONOUS AC MOTORS:-In this type of motor, the rotation of
the rotor is synchronized with the frequency of the supply current and the
speed remains constant under varying loads, so is ideal for driving
equipment at a constant speed and are used in high precision positioning
devices like robots, instrumentation, machines and process control. These kind
of motors are used even in high precision positioning devices like modern robots, ammonia
and air compressors, motor-generator sets, continuous rolling mills, paper and cement industries
11. ASYNCHRONOUS
SINGLE
PHASE
THREE PHASE
ASYNCHRONOUS AC MOTORS:-This type of motor uses
electromagnetic induction from the magnetic field of the stator winding to
produce an electric current in the rotor and hence Torque.
SINGLE PHASE:- As the single phase system is more economical and the
power requirement in most of the houses, shops, offices are small, which can be
easily met by single phase system. The single phase motors are simple in
construction, cheap in cost, reliable and easy to repair and maintain. Due to all these
advantages the single phase motor finds its application in vacuum cleaner, fans,
washing machine, centrifugal pump, blowers, washing machine, small toys etc.
12. THREE PHASE:- this type of motor does not require any starting
device or we can say they are self starting induction motor. The rotation
of the magnetic field in an induction motor has the advantage that no
electrical connections need to be made to the rotor. Electric Train engine
, cooling fans used to cool large machines like alternators etc
, chimneys at power plants, printing machines, Rolling mills
