Acorn Networks Intros Second Generation, 10 Gbps Network Co
Processor
Acorn Networks, a semiconductor company focusing on wire speed traffic
management for the Wide Area and Metro infrastructures, introduced its
secondgeneration genFlow coprocessor. The genFlow10G is Acorn
Networks' second commercial singlechip product for multiprotocol processing
and traffic shaping at 10 Gbps optical interface rates. The device supports the
switching and interworking of protocols including Ethernet, IP, MPLS, ATM, and
Frame Relay.
"genFlow10G not only gives our existing OC48c customers a simple
migration path to a greater feature capability at wire speed, but it also provides
the platform for new entrants to offer the sophisticated traffic control required
of today's multiservice, multiprotocol, carrier class systems," said Jim
Johnston, Acorn's Vice President of Marketing. "We're giving carriers the
control they need to sustain the 'five nines' availability required of Service Level
Agreement contracts, and the ability to deliver Virtual Private Networks that
sustain the CoS/QoS required by applications such as VoIP."
genFlow10G is a highlyintegrated IC solution that combines all the key
functions required to interface directly between a switch fabric and a network
processor at a full 10 Gbps wire speed. genFlow10G combines the linerate
processing speed of specialized ASIC cores with the flexibility of Acorn
Networks' proven traffic management technology to support policing, queuing,
scheduling and shaping of traffic for up to one million individual flows and
connections while maintaining statistics and other control information on a per
flow and perconnection basis.
genFlow10G also works as a standalone 12.8 Gbps switch for up to 256 input
and 256 output ports. Unlike other products, genFlow10G provides a builtin
ability to channelize down to DS3 or STS1 levels, while supporting up to four
independent OC48c multiprotocol ports or one singlestream OC192c (10
Gbps clear channel), making it ready to interface directly to WDM and optical
switching architectures. The single chip genFlow solution also integrates a
traffic management engine that manages bandwidth allocation and schedules
cell or packet transmission for each connection by using a highly efficient
hierarchical scheduling technology.
The genFlow family of devices represents a flexible solution designed for use
in multiple products including OC48c and OC192c multiservice switching
platforms, Core/Edge switches and routers, DS3 to OC192c aggregation and
GigE platforms for the Metro network, and as a standalone 256 X 256 12.8
