4. INTRODUCTION
Naturopathy is a
form of alternative
medicine based on
a belief in vitalism,
holism which
posits that a
special energy
called vital energy
or vital force
guides bodily
processes such as
metabolism,
reproduction,
growth, and
adaptation.
5. HEALTH
General health is viewed asâ a state of relative absence of
pain and discomfort and continuous adaptation,
adjustment to the environment ensuring optimal
functionâ
6. WHAT IS HEALTH?
Soundness of body or mind
that condition in which its
functions are duly and
efficiently discharged â-
Oxford English Dictionary.
âThe condition of being
sound in body, mind or
spirit especially freedom
from physical disease or
painâ- Webster.
7. ACCORDI
NG TO
WHO
In January 1998, the Executive Board
W.H.O World Health Assembly ENDORSED
to modify the preamble of the
Constitution accordingly as :-
âHealth is a state of complete physical, mental and
social well-being and not merely the absence of
disease or Infirmityâ- WHO (1948)
In 1984. The revised the definition of health
defined it as. The extent to which an individual or
group can realize aspirations and satisfy needs
and to change or cope with the environment.

11. POSITIVE HEALTH
Positive health describes a state
beyond the mere absence of
disease.
It conceptualizes health
biologically, psychologically and
socially.
Perfect functioning of the body
and mind.
Positive health improve quality of
life, decreased health costs, better
mental health in aging and better
prognosis when illness strikes.
12. CONCEPT OF WELL BEING
STANDAR OF LIVING LEVEL OF LIVING QUALITY OF LIFE
ï It includes the level of
education, employment
status, food, dress, house,
amusement and comforts
of modern living.

18. ACCORDING TO
NATUROPATHY
What is health?
Health is a normal and harmonious
vibration of the elements and forces
composing the human entity on
physical , mental and moral planes of
being, in conformity with the
constructive principle in nature, applied
to the individual life - HENRY
LINDLAHR M.D.
LINDLAHR H. NATURE CURE, THE NATURE CURE LIBRARY, CHICAGO, 1914;438 PP
19. HEALTH ACCORDING TO
NATUROPATHY
ï Health according to British naturopathic
association is a system of treatment which
recognizes the existence of vital curative force
within the body.
ï The recognition of a life force regulating our
ability to heal ourselves is known as vitalism
and it is a concept common to all forms of
natural therapy.
20. Dr. Benedict Lust, Father of
naturopathy, gave the name
naturopathy which consists of
drugless system of medicine.
Gandhiji, the Father of Indian
Naturopathy, introduced nature
cure by the book named âReturn
to natureâ
Naturopathy is a lifestyle and
the easiest way to a healthy life.
Main motto of nature cure is:-
âFood is the medicine ;
medicine is the food.â-
Hippocrates.
21. VIS -
MEDICATRIX
NATURAE
(healing power of nature)
Health is defined as a good
vitality where the vital energy
flows energetically through the
persons being ,sustaining and
replenishing us while disease is
the disturbance of vital energy
22. REQUIREMENT FOR OPTIMAL
FUNCTION OF THE BODY
Adequate
arterial supply
for nourishment
Proper venous
drainage
Good nervous
supply
23. VITALITY
ï±Vitality can be described as the
ability to adapt and to self manage
which was elaborated into the
positive health approach
ï±Vitality can be regarded as an
important concept of this positive
health approach.

24. DEFINING
VITALITY
ï¶There are several descriptions of
vitality, which can mainly be
described by
ï¶Mental:- mental and emotional
well being, lower levels of fatigue,
mental resilience and perseverance
ï¶Physical:- high energy levels and
feeling strong and fit

43. DISEASE
The WHO has defined health
but not disease. This is
because disease has many
shades ranging from
subclinical cases to severe
manifest illness.
Some disease commence
acutely and some insidiously.
In some diseases, a carrier
state occurs in which the
individual remains outwardly
healthy and is able to infect
others.
In some instances, the
organism may cause more
than one clinical
manifestation . In some
cases, disease may be caused
by more than one organism.
44. The endpoint and outcome of disease is variable â
recovery, disability, or death
Some disease has short
course, and some prolonged
course
It is easy to determine the illness
when signs and symptoms manifest ,
but in many disease the border line
between normal and abnormal is
indistinct.
45. CONCEPT OF DISEASE
Definition - WEBSTER
âą A condition in which body health is impaired , a
departure from a state of health ,an alteration of the
human body interrupting the performance of vital
functions.
Definition âoxford English dictionary
âą A condition of the body or some part or organ of the
body in which its functions are disrupted or deranged
46. DISEASE ACCORDING TO
WESTERN MEDICINE
Disease refers to pathological changes
diagnosed by signs and symptoms ; it is
considered objective and defined by
doctors
47. DISEASE
ï¶Notions of health
are really context
dependent, as
human diseases only
exist in Relation to
people and people
live in where it
Cultural context.
ï¶What counts as a
disease also changes
over historical time,
partly as a result of
increasing
expectations of
health. Partly due to
changes in The
diagnostic ability.
But mostly for a
mixture of social and
economic reasons.

ON
ï±Well known example is
homosexuality
ï±After being redefined during the
nineteenth century as a state
rather than act, in the first half of
the twentieth century
homosexuality was viewed as an
endocrine disturbance requiring
hormone treatment.
ï±Later its pathological identity
changed as it was recategorized
as an organic mental disorder
treatable by electroshock and
sometimes neurosurgery and
finally in 1974 it was officially
de-pathologized, when the
American psychiatric Association
removed it from the listed
diseases

49. GERM THEORY
MOSLEY, MARK MD, MPH VIEWPOINT, EMERGENCY MEDICINE NEWS: SEPTEMBER 23, 2020 - VOLUME
42 - ISSUE 9C - 10.1097/01.EEM.0000718260.87914.7D DOI: 10.1097/01.EEM.0000718260.87914.7D
50. GERM THEORY
Louis Pasteur took two
swan-neck flasks
containing a rich liquid
broth and boiled the
broths. He retained one
flask as it is; and broke
the neck of the other
flask. The broth in the
first flask remained as it
is; whereas the broth in
the second flask became
cloudy which indicated
microbial growth.
Dust particles in air
entered the first flask but
were stuck in the swan
neck and could not travel
into the broth. On the
other hand, dust particles
easily fell in the second
flask, thereby
introducing microbes
into the broth. This
experiment proved the
existence of germs in air
dust particles in air, to be
precise
52. THE TRIAD OF
EPIDEMIOLOGY
ï”The traditional triangle of epidemiology is
based on the communicable disease model.
ï”Shows the interaction and interdependence
of agent, host, environment, and time
53. DISEASE
ACCORDI
NG TO
NATUROP
ATHY
Disease is abnormal or inharmonious
vibration of the elements and forces
composing the human entity on one or
more planes of being, in conformity with
the destructive principle of nature
applied to individual life.
55. EFFECT OF VIOLATION OF
NATURES LAW
1.Abnormal composition of blood and lymph.
2.Accumulation of waste matter, morbid materials and poisons.
3.Lowered vitality
56. MORBID MATTER THEORY
Undigested,
uneliminated,
unexcreted matter
which is harmful
for the body is
called morbid
matter.
Encumbrance
It is nothing but the
deposition of the fatty
or effete material or
morbid matter.
There are 4 types of
encumbrances:
1. Front encumbrance 2. Side encumbrance
3. Back encumbrance 4. Mixed encumbrance
57. Since in front encumbrance every portion of the front
of the body right down to legs is affected, acute
diseases may occur like e.g., measles, scarlet fever,
diphtheria, inflammation of legs.
Chronic diseases like disease of the throat and neck.
According to Kuhne, front encumbrance is
comparatively easy to cure of that the diseases
resulting from it are not in general danger.
58. ï Nature cure philosophy believes that
bacteria develop only under morbid,
pathogenic conditions.
ï Nature cure philosophy believes that
bacteria and parasites survive in the body
even without a disease symptom due to
the presence of morbid matter.
ï Hence Detoxification renders the human
body free from all diseases.
59. THE BASIC CAUSE OF DISEASE IS NOT
BACTERIA
Bacteria develops after the accumulation of morbid matter,
which provides a favorable atmosphere for their growth.
Basic cause is morbid matter and not the bacteria.
If one practices righteous living, no bacteria can cause any
disease
60. SOURCE OF TOXAEMIA
1. External
2. Internal â Biogenic Toxins
a) Indigestion
b) Improper elimination.
c) Autointoxication due to microbial
growth / immune dysfunction
3. Psychological
EXAMPLE OF TOXAEMIS
What are junk foods?
1. Grilled or roasted foods
2. Deep fried foods
3. Instant foods
4. Soft drinks
5. Canned foods
6. Pickled foods
62. PRIMARY CAUSE OF
DISEASE
1.Lowered vitality due to overwork, night work,
excesses, overstimulation, poisonous drugs and ill-
advised surgical operations.
2. Abnormal composition of blood and lymph due to
the improper selection and combination of food, and
especially the lack of organic mineral salts and other
essential nutritional elements.
3. Accumulation of waste matter, morbid matter and
poisons due to the first two causes, as well as to faulty
diet, overeating, use of alcoholic and narcotic stimulants,
drugs, Vaccines, antitoxins and by suppression of acute
disease by poisonous drugs, ice, and surgical operations.
63.
64. SECONDARY CAUSE OF
DISEASE
1.Hereditary and acquired taints of sycosis, scrofula, psora, syphilis;
mercurialness, cinchonas, iodism and many other forms of chronic
poisoning.
2. Fevers, inflammations, skin eruptions, chronic sinus discharges,
ulcers, abscesses, germs, bacteria, parasites, etc.
3.Mechanical subluxations, distortions and displacements of bony
structures, muscles and ligaments; weakening and loss of reason, will,
and self-control resulting in negative, sensitive and subjective conditions
which open the way to nervous prostration, control by other personalities
(hypnotic influence, obsession, possession); the different forms of
insanity, epilepsy, etc.
4.Each tissue has its own work to perform and when affected or
deranged gives rise to its own peculiar symptoms; that is, each
deranged organ speaks its own language or dialect
65.
66. FREE RADICALS
ï” They are produced either from normal cell metabolisms in situ or
from external sources (pollution, cigarette smoke, radiation,
medication).
ï” When an overload of free radicals cannot gradually be destroyed,
their accumulation in the body generates a phenomenon called
oxidative stress. This process plays a major part in the development
of chronic and degenerative illness such as cancer, autoimmune
disorders, aging, cataract, rheumatoid arthritis, cardiovascular and
neurodegenerative diseases.
ï” The human body has several mechanisms to counteract oxidative
stress by producing antioxidants, which are either naturally produced
in situ, or externally supplied through foods and/or supplements.
69. HEALING CRISIS
ï A healing crisis is an acute
reaction, resulting from the
ascendancy of Natureâs healing
forces over disease conditions. Its
tendency is toward recovery, and
it is, therefore, in conformity with
Natureâs constructive principle.
DISEASE CRISIS
It is an acute reaction resulting from
the ascendancy of disease conditions
over the healing forces of the
organism. Its tendency is toward
fatal termination, and it is, therefore,
in conformity with Natureâs
destructive principle
70. ACUTE DISEASE
ï± What is commonly called acute
disease is in reality the result of
Natureâs efforts to eliminate from
the organism waste matter, foreign
matter and poisons, and to repair
injury to living tissues. In other
words, every so-called acute
disease is the result of a cleansing
and healing effort of Nature. The
real disease is lowered vitality,
abnormal composition of the vital
fluids (blood and lymph) and the
resulting accumulation of waste
materials and poisons- HENRY
LINLARR M.D.
CHRONIC
DISEASE
ï± Chronic disease is a condition of the organism
in which lowered vibration (lowered vitality),
due to the accumulation of waste matter and
poisons, with the consequent destruction of
vital parts and organs, has progressed to such
an extent that Natureâs constructive and
healing forces are no longer able to react
against the disease conditions by acute
corrective efforts (healing crises)- HENRY
LINLARR M.D.
ï Chronic disease is a condition of the organism
in which the morbid encumbrances have
gained the ascendancy and prevent acute
reaction (healing crises) on the part of the
constructive forces of Nature
ï Chronic disease is the inability of the
organism to react by acute efforts or healing
crises against constitutional disease conditions
71. UNITY OF DISEASE& UNITY
OF CURE
ï Put forward by Louis Kuhne.
ï Cause for all the diseases â accumulation of toxins or Morbid Matter.
(UNITY OF DISEASE)
ï Cause for all cure-elimination of toxins or Morbid Matter. (UNITY OF
CURE
ï The primary cause of all disease is
violation of Natureâs Laws.
ï Violations of Nature's Laws in thinking,
breathing, eating, drinking, dressing,
working, resting and in moral, sexual and
social conduct results in certain primary
and secondary manifestations of disease
72. FACTORS AFFECTING
UNITY OF DISEASE
1. Strain: Physical, mental, emotional, environmental.
2. Wrong food habits: Fast food, junk food, stale food , and
untimely eating habits.
3. Enervation: Improper nerve supply in the different parts of
the body.
4. Insufficient elimination: After the intake of food there
must be proper ex-creation. Deposition of morbid matter
leads to encumbrance
IN SHORT WRONG LIFESTYLE
All these above-mentioned leads to the retention of waste
products which in turn leads to the retention of toxin then
to diseases. It also leads to chronic & degenerative
conditions.
73. UNITY OF CURE
What Is Nature Cure?
Nature Cure is a system
of building the entire
being in harmony with
the constructive
principle in Nature on
the physical, mental,
moral and spiritual
planes of being.
What Is Cure?
Cure is the readjustment
of the human organism
from abnormal to
normal conditions and
functions.
74. 1.Return to nature:
âąImplementation of natural habits to the society is important.
âąProper reasoning, will power and self control should be developed.
âąReturn to natural habits as in thinking breathing, sleeping, everything involved in our daily
life.
2. Economy of vital forces:
âąNeeds for prevention of wastes of vital force by excessive metabolism and wrong habits is
associated.
âąScientific relaxation, proper rest, sleep, proper food habits, right mental attitude and
positive thinking.
3. Elimination:
âąIt requires the proper selection of food and drinks in the right combination.
âąRegular fasting is required.
77. CONCEPT
BASIC FOR MAKING BALANCE AND
TREATMENT
Naturopathy system aims at 3 levels of intervention
ï¶PREVENTIVE
ï¶PROMOTIVE
ï¶Curative aspect of health
78. ALL
DISEASE,
THEIR
CAUSE AND
THEIR
TREATMENT
ARE ONE
All forms of disease are due
to a single cause, i.e.,
accumulation of waste
(morbid) materials and
bodily refuge in the system.
The only way to cure the
diseases is to employ
methods, which will enable
the system to throw off
these toxic accumulations
79. Acute diseases are our friends not the
enemies
Chronic diseases, such as heart disease,
diabetes, rheumatism, asthma, kidney disorders,
etc. are the outcome of wrong treatment and
suppression of the acute diseases
Nature is the greatest healer
Body has the capacity to prevent itself from
diseases & regain health
The role of a Naturopath is just to help the body
in regaining back and fully developing its
natural healing capacity
80. In Naturopathy, patient is treated and not the disease
The successful treatment of a patient depends on 5
factors:
(i) How much morbid matter is there in patientâs body?
(ii) How much is the vital life force of the patient?
(iii) How much patience does the patient have?
(iv) How strong medication/operation the patient has
already gone through?
(v) How much belief does the patient have in
Naturopathy treatment?
81. In Naturopathy diagnosis is
easily possible
Long wait for diagnosis is not
required
Only thing that is required for
diagnosis:
âąMorbid matter is accumulated in which
location (front, back, side, whole body) or
organ (heart, kidney, liver, stomach,
intestine, etc.) of the body
Chronic ailments can be treated
successfully; this treatment can
take slightly long time
Natureâs Law - Nature works at
slow pace growing a tree takes
much longer than cutting it
82. (10)
Nature Cure treats body, instead of treating each
organ separately
Naturopathy does not use
medicines.
According to Naturopathy
âFood is Medicineâ According to Gandhi Ji âRama
Nama is the best Natural Treatmentâ
Meaning
Doing prayer according to oneâs
spiritual faith is an important part
of treatment
83. GOALS OF NATUROPATHY
Providing
Providing a suitable
environment for the body to
heal itself.
Enhancing
Enhancing the Capacity of
Eliminatory organs.
Treating
Treating the root cause of
the Disease.

86. CHALLENGES IN
ACHIEVING HEALTH.
ï¶The translation of this definition to
individuals' health also poses challenges.
ï¶For examples. Individuals with disabilities are
non communicable, and chronic conditions
may subjectively feel healthy, even though by
this definition they might not be considered
as such.
ï¶Health, defined as a broad goal that could
mean different things to different people at
different times and in different places, may
hamper informed and active cooperation to
achieve this goal.
87. HEALTH IS NOT
ABSENCE OF DISEASE
ï¶In 2010 and International conference of
Experts presented a critique of The Who
definition of health.
ï¶It contributes to medicalization of the
society. It is inadequate for chronic diseases
and it is neither operational nor measurable.
ï¶These experts recommended that a
definition of health should include the
resilience or capacity to cope and maintain
and restore once integrity, equilibrium and
sense of well being.
