7. Summary
A Letter To God is a story written by G.L. Fuentes. This story portrays the deep faith of a farmer
named Lencho towards God. Lencho was wishing for a downpour for his crops. He saw clouds and
told the woman about it. Everyone was called for dinner and just then it started raining. Lencho
went out to enjoy and expressed the drops as coins (money). But suddenly, a hailstorm began.
Lencho began hoping that it would end soon but the storm continued for a hour. The field was
white as if it was covered in salt. All the corn was destroyed and Lencho was filled with sorrow.
Everyone was depressed in the thought of no food for whole year. But Lencho didn’t lose hope, he
believed in God. So, Lencho wrote a letter to God describing his situation and asking for 100
pesos. He wrote ‘To God’ on the envelope and went to mail it in the town. The postman who got
it, brought it mockingly to the postmaster who was a fat and amiable man. He was amazed by
Lencho’s faith. To help Lencho, the postmaster thought of doing a good deed by collecting
money from his employees and his salary. He was able to collect 70 pesos. He put the money in
an envelope and wrote ‘God’ on it. The next Sunday,
8. Lencho came to ask for any letter. The postman handed him the letter. Lencho began angry when
he counted the money. Lencho began writing a letter to God and put it in a mail box. The
Postman opened the letter and read it. Lencho wrote about only receiving 70 pesos and told God
to not send it through mail because the post employees are crooks.
9. Title Justification
The title ‘The Letter To God’ is aptly justified. In the story, Lencho writes a
letter to God describing his situation and asking for 100 pesos. When
Lencho receives only 70 pesos, he writes a letter again. Thus the title is fit
for the story as it clearly describes the story.
10. Moral of the story
The moral of the story 'The Letter to god' is that extreme faith in the
almighty can give you a ray of hope even in the darkest times.
