3. WHAT IS A SPORT
Sports are all forms of usually physical activity or
games which through casual or organized
participation, aim to use, maintain or improve

4. HIISTOY OF SPORTS IN
INDIA
The history of sports in India dates back to the Vedic era.
Physical culture in ancient India was fed by a powerful fuel-
religious rites.
There were some well-defined values like the mantra in
the Atharva-Veda, saying," Duty is in my right hand and the
fruits of victory in my left".
In India, dehvada or the body-way is defined as "one of the
ways to full realization." In the day and age of the Rig-Veda,
Ramayana and Mahabharata men of stature and circumstance
were expected to be competent in chariot-racing, archery,
horsemanship, military tactics, wrestling, weight-lifting,
swimming and hunting.

AFTER INDEPENDENCE
India is home to a diverse population playing many different sports
across the country.
Football is a popular sport in some of the Indian states.
The country has won eight Olympic gold medals in field hockey,
another popular game in India.
Kabaddi, an indigenous sport is popular in rural India. Several games
originated in India including Chess, Snooker and other regional games.
India has won medals in Badminton, Kabaddi, Hockey and many other
sports and disciplines.
Cricket is the most played sport followed by Badminton and Football.

PLAYED IN INDIA
Field hockey
Field hockey was considered to be the national game of India, but
this has been recently denied by the Government of India, clarifying
on a Right to Information Act (RTI) filed that India has not declared
any sport as the national game.
Until the mid-1970s, India dominated international field hockey,
winning eight Olympic gold medals and won the men's Hockey
World Cup held in 1975. Since then, barring a gold medal in the 1980
Olympics, India's performance in field hockey has been dismal, with
other hockey-playing nations such as Australia, Netherlands
and Germany improving their standards and catching up with India.
7. Tennis
Tennis is a sport among Indians in urban areas. Tennis has gained
popularity after the exploits of Vijay Amritraj. India's fortunes in Grand
Slam singles have been unimpressive, although Leander Paes won a
singles bronze medal at the 1996 Olympics.
Since the late 1990s India has had impressive results in Grand Slam
doubles, Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi have won many men's
doubles and mixed doubles Grand Slam titles.
Sania Mirza is the most notable Indian woman tennis player, having won
a WTA title and breaking into the Top 30 WTA rankings, also winning
three Grand Slam doubles events, the first at Wimbledon in 2015.
On the men's side, young Somdev Devvarman and Yuki Bhambri are
flying India's flag on the ATP Tour. Yuki was the Australian Open junior
singles champion in 2009
8. Badminton
Badminton is played widely in India and it is one of the most popular
sports in India. Badminton's popularity has grown in these years.
Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal has been ranked in the top-10 rankings
since 2010, peaking at no. 1 in 2015
India has won medals at the BWF World Championships as well,
with Padukone winning in 1982. The doubles pairing of Gutta and
Ponnappa became the first women to win the medal when they won
the bronze in 2011.
Sindhu won consecutive medals at 2013 and 2014 editions. Nehwal
won a silver at 2015 Championships.

9. Wrestling
Considered one of the most ancient and oldest sports in the
world, wrestling in India has a glorious past.
The sport of wrestling began its journey in India several
centuries ago, during the Middle Ages.
Wrestling is among the most prestigious and oldest events in
the Olympic Games. It was included in the Olympics in 708
BC.
In India, wrestling is mostly known as Malla-Yuddha.
Wrestling in India is also known as dangal, and it is the basic
form of a wrestling tournament.
10. INDIA AS A HOST
India has hosted and co-hosted several international sporting events, including
the 1951 and 1982 Asian Games,
the 1987, 1996 and 2011 Cricket World Cup,
the 2003 Afro-Asian Games, the 2010 Hockey World Cup
and the 2010 Commonwealth Games.
The Indian Premier League (IPL) is a premier twenty20 cricket league held every
year from 2008.
The Indian Super League is a football league tournament held since 2014.
Major international sporting events annually held in India include the Chennai
Open in tennis, the Indian Masters in golf.
From 2011 to 2013, India hosted the Indian Grand Prix Formula 1 race at
the Buddh International Circuit, Greater Noida.
The National Games of India is a national domestic sports event, which has been
held in the country since 1924. It will host the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup.

15. SPORTS AUTHORITY OF
INDIA
Sports Authority of India , the field arm of the Ministry, supports and nurtures
talent in youth, and provides them with requisite infrastructure, equipment,
coaching facilities and competition exposure.
Dorabji Tata, with the support of Dr. A.G. Noehren, then director of YMCA,
established the Indian Olympic Association(IOA) in 1927.
IOA is responsible for the Indian continent’s participation in the Olympic
Games, Commonwealth Games, Asian Games (outdoor, indoor and beach),
and South Asian Games.
The selection of the national teams is done by the respective national federations
and then recommend to IOA for official sponsorship for participation in the
games conducted under the auspices of the International Olympic
Committee, Olympic Council of Asia, Commonwealth Games Federation, and
SAG
Each Olympic and non-Olympic sport has a federation at the national level.
16. POLITICS IN SPORTS
Politics are sports are two different things, but in India, it’s not
different. Politics in sports is the major reason behind the poor
performance of India.
India is country of 1.25 billion population, still got only 2
medals in Rio Olympics. One silver and a bronze. Two girls of
India won the Olympic medals. In history of Olympics, only
Abhinav Bindra won gold medal in shooting for India.
There are many reasons behind this scenario, but one of most
valid reason is politics in sports.
It’s very unfortunate that sports ministers are those people who
doesn’t have any knowledge about sports
17. POLITICS IN SPORTS
In India most of the sports organizations are controlled by
politicians. Politics in sports is in every sports.
According to a report India can get 10 Medals in 2020 if
India spend 480 crore rupees on players.
18. Cricket overpowering other
sports in India
Indians eat, live, sleep, talk and walk cricket.
We all know that hockey is our national game but in practical
vision its cricket maniac all over.
No one remembers that in Shooting, Gagan Narang won four
Gold medals in Common Wealth Games2010, or Indian World
Champion wrestler Sushil kumar has won the gold medal in
FILA 2010 World Wrestling Championships or Olympic
bronze medals won by tennis star Leander Paes (Atlanta,
1996), but Anil Kumble's 10-wicket haul, Harbhajan's hat-
trick, and Virender Sehwag's 309 will be evergreen in memory
19. Cricket in India is becoming an obstacle in the progress
of other sports.
Mercialization and the advertising world have promoted
cricket to an extent that it has become a Mount Everest,
which is badly affecting other sports in the country.
An equal exposure is not given to all sports in the
country.
New comers in cricket sport get name & fame in a short
span. But its not happen with other sports players.
20. Sports as a career in India
Sports, which was traditionally considered a hobby especially
in India, is now being taken seriously as a career option.
With the country's medal performance in wrestling,
badminton, boxing , etc at the 2012 London Olympics and
with F1 coming to India, its just not cricket which is a rage
among the youth.
Games and sports are an essential part of Indian culture and if
we talk about cricket it is like a religion in India and like
Sachin Tendulkar who is well known as father of cricket the
success of Indian sports people in recent international sporting
events has brought the focus to sports careers.
