Words or vocabulary forms an essential part
in learning a language. Hence due attention
should be paid to this important unit. It is
divided in various sections-Synonyms,
Antonyms, One-word substitution,
Homonyms and Words often miss-spelt.
These are important tests in most
competitive examinations.
SYNONYMS
Synonyms are the words that are similar or
nearly similar in meaning. A synonym, thus,
has a literal meaning while its implied
meaning may be different. Defining a
synonym, the Concise Oxford Dictionary of
Current English mentions – A synonym is a
“word or phrase identical and coextensive in
senses and usage with another of the same
language”. Oxford Advanced Learner’s
Dictionary of Current English writes – A
synonym is a “word denoting the same thing
as another but suitable to different
emphasis”.
 Hints:
There are certain points which a student
should remember while choosing a synonym:
1. A synonym should be in the same
part of speech in which the given
word is.
2. A synonym, as mentioned above,
may have a literal meaning and
another an implied meaning. So the
students should not choose a
synonym blindly but be careful
whether he has chosen the right word
on the basis of the information given
in the passage.
3. Sometimes the examiners include an
antonym in the alternatives given for
the answer of that synonym. Hence,
the students must be very cautious in
choosing a synonym.

 Examples
Choose the word nearest in meaning to the bold part:
1. As soon as he finished his speech, there was spontaneous applause from the
audience.
(a) Well times
(b) Willing
(c) Instinctive
(d) Instantaneous
The answer “D” is correct since the word “instantaneous” is similar in meaning to
spontaneous and also it is an adjective.
2. The leader’s charisma attracted many followers.
(a) Candour
(b) Magnetic appeal
(c) Power
(d) Humility
Here the correct choice is “B”. “A”, “B” and “C” may be the probable alternatives but
the key word “attracted” suggests “B” as the most appropriate choice.
3. Marriage provides a happy bond between two souls.
(a) Union
(b) Connection
(c) Agreement
(d) Adjustment
The correct answer is “A” according to the context.
Let us take another sentence: His word is as good as his bond. The answer is “C”
as here is a reference to written agreement.
4. He made a very pertinent remark regarding the plays of Shakespeare.
(a) Relevant
(b) Irrelevant
(c) Appropriate
(d) Reliable
3
For More Free Study Material for Bank & SSC visit-www.polarisedutech.com
Among these four alternatives “B” is at once eliminated as it is not the synonym but
an antonym of the given word. The other two choices “C” and “D” are also eliminated
because they are not same in meaning. Hence “A” is the right choice.
