As designers, our intentions are typically good: we seek positive outcomes
of our work, but sometimes even the most well-intentioned strategies darken.
Dr Melis Senova invites the audience to explore aspects of the practice
often not discussed.
She will draw parallels between the concerns of Victor Papanek, a design
scholar who holds designers accountable for their contribution to society
and Ted Kacynzki, a person motivated to do terrible acts in response to
similar societal concerns.

founder of ConsenSys and co-founder of Ethereum, the most powerful

Lubin will explain how he first became interested in blockchain, why he
joined Vitalik Buterin on the Ethereum Project, and why he started a
company as uniquely structured as ConsenSys. Additionally, he will share
his vision for a decentralized future enabled by this technology.

of the people.
And just when when we're on a roll, we face tougher questions about what a
more effective and efficient government might mean in the Trump era.

Olivier Assayas is a French author, screenwriter and director. He’s written
and directed notable films such as Demonlover, Something in the Air, and
2016’s psychological thriller Personal Shopper starring Kristen Stewart.
Richard Linklater is an award-winning filmmaker best known for such
visionary works such as Slacker, the Before Trilogy with Julie Delpy and
Ethan Hawk, Boyhood, and many others. Linklater also serves as the Artistic
Director for the Austin Film Society, which he founded in 1985 to showcase
films from around the world that were not typically shown in Austin.

Most weeks between 2006 and 2014, Ira Glass’ show This American Life was
the most popular podcast on iTunes. Then, in October 2014 his team created
Serial, which blew it out of the water with 300 million downloads and
counting across two seasons.
In 2017 his team followed it up with another blockbuster, S-Town, which got
40 million downloads in its first month. Glass and his team never predicted
these shows would be that big. During this talk, he’ll explain what they
believe it takes to create a truly compelling narrative. He’ll play clips and
mix stories live on stage. Glass will also offer his unique take on the state of
the business and technology of audio storytelling.

The Future and Science of
Psychedelics

Join bestselling author Tim Ferriss (Tools of Titans, The 4-Hour Workweek,
etc.) as he probes the science, mysteries, and future of psychedelics with
Dr. Roland R. Griffiths, a clinical pharmacologist at Johns Hopkins.
Dr. Griffiths has been researching mood-altering compounds for more than
40 years, has published more than 370 scientific papers, and started the
psilocybin (think “magic mushrooms") research program at Johns Hopkins
nearly 20 years ago.
Dr. Griffiths and his colleagues have been leaders in the re-initiation of
research with classic psychedelic drugs, which was blocked for a period of
several decades. This session will offer details and stories that can help
both novices and experienced psychonauts get a better understanding of
the applications of these incredible compounds.

Reddit: Life After (Near) Death

Steve Huffman co-founded Reddit, which billed itself “the front page of the
Internet,” at age 21. When he returned to the company more than a decade
later, in 2015, as chief executive, he faced terrible morale, and inability to
ship products. The company had been rocked by a series of high-profile
scandals. To get back on the course of growth, Huffman (known on Reddit
as u/Spez) would have to fix several underlying problems. Two years later,
he’s hired nearly 300 people, grown Reddit to the 4th-most-popular site in
the United States, and managed to quell toxic speech on the site. In a
conversation with award-winning journalist Christine Lagorio-Chafkin, who
is writing a book about Reddit called We Are the Nerds, Huffman will open
up about bringing his creation back from the brink.

Just Press Go: Waymo’s
Self-Driving Cars Are Here

Waymo’s goal is to build the world’s most experienced driver that can take
people and things anywhere with just the press of a button. After 9 years
and more than 4 million miles, what started as a Google moonshot is
becoming a reality.
For nearly a year now, members of the public in Arizona have been using
Waymo’s self-driving vehicles to run errands, commute to work, or even pick
up their kids from soccer practice. Later this year, Waymo will launch its
driverless ride-hailing service in the Greater Phoenix area. Hear from
Waymo CEO John Krafcik about how it is readying Waymo’s technology
for the road by putting its vehicles through the longest, toughest ongoing
