This document summarizes a company that offers various plastic piling and flood management products. Some key points:
1. They provide long-lasting plastic sheet piling, pile drivers, and drainage filters made from recycled materials for flood control and erosion applications.
2. Their plastic sheet piling comes in thicknesses from 3.5-11mm and lengths up to 13m, and can be used with wood or steel posts for a durable hybrid system.
3. They have developed new mini vibrators for quickly installing plastic sheet piling as well as cut-off piles with seals and bracing systems for rapid deployment of flood barriers.

8. Plastic Piling has come a long way
The Historical Picture
Plastic Piling was introduced 20 years ago, by plastic extrusion companies that saw this as an easy
commercial opportunity; an extension of the already successful utilisation of plastics, in civil engineering
and construction. The perceived simple geometry of steel piling leant itself well to the extrusion process
and created a product that offered great potential:
• Longevity – no rust or rot
• Low weight – easy manual handling
• Easy to cut – no hot work permits needed
• Spark proof
But there was little choice and too much focus on making plastic piling “look like a sheet pile” rather than
“install and function as a sheet pile”. The original benefits were limited by the fact that the piling was too
flexible to be driven.
For many years it appeared that plastic piling would never realise its true potential and so it was simply
promoted as a cheaper alternative to steel.
9. Today
In the last 20 years many hard lessons have been learnt, leading to advances in the quality of the product,
equipment and methodology:
• More choice, there is now a wide range of “U” and “Z” shaped advanced pilings to choose from. This
is as for steel, enables the correct selection and appropriate use of a specific pile
• Better quality of recycled material used in the construction
• Better designs
o Improved aesthetics – moving away from industrial looking corrugations
o Vastly improved installation
• Improvements in methods and available equipment – Mandrels and smaller vibrators (our own design
of mandrels and EMS series of vibrators)
• Hybrids – combining materials plastic, wood, steel and concrete
o Driven kingpost and panel solutions – no undercut
o Low carbon footprint
o Cost saving less plastic – used only where needed
o Plastic enclosed timber/steel/concrete –protective benefits
Plastic Piling has come a long way
10. My story – The Hammerman
Education - Qualified to post graduate level at Kent University and the University of
Strathclyde. Technical member of IOSH having obtain a Distinction in the General Certificate in
Occupational Health and Safety
1994 -2014 Aldridge Piling Equipment – APE - 20 years of experience in piling plant hire, piling
equipment design and manufacture, working alongside many producers of plastic sheet piling.
2000 – 2014 Committee member of STIG – The Shoring Technology Interest Group, involved in the
production of several technical guides on plastic piling, and piling equipment. Principle author of the
group publication Safety in shoring, which has sold close to 10,000 copies to date.
2007 – The Hammerman Equipment Plastic Piling – Business founded on a strong belief that for plastic
piling to realise its true potential, a strategy was needed that combined improvement is sheet piling,
with an adaptation and development in pile driving equipment. Over the last 7 years we have proven
that sheet piling made from PVC can be driven efficiency and withstand the demands of the
application.
2015 – The Hammer (Manufacturing and Research) Company – has been created to develop new
piling methods and equipment to further facilitate the acceptance of plastic sheet piling, and sheet
piling in general.
