Introduction
Construction planning and
scheduling refers to the process
through which a construction
business maps out exactly,
what will take place during a
project, what resources are
needed, when key activities will
take place, which personnel will
be involved, and anything else
pertinent to the project.
Objectives of the Study
To know the essential requirements of management skills and techniques
To identify the precedence relationships among project activities
To make better use of people, money, & material resources by identifying critical parts in
the project
To plan and schedule construction management techniques such as Bar Chart Method
and Critical Path Method
Project Planning & Scheduling
Project
planning
The process of identifying all the activities
necessary to successfully complete the project.
Project
Scheduling
The process of determining the sequential order of the
planned activities, assigning realistic durations to each
activity, and determining the start and finish dates for
each activity
Work
Breakdown
Structure
(WBS)
For any size project, large or small, it is
necessary to develop a well-defined Work
Breakdown Structure (WBS) that divides the
project into identifiable parts that can be
managed
• It defines the work to be performed, identifies the
needed expertise, assists in selection of the project
team, and establishes a base for project scheduling
and control.
• It is a graphical display of the project that shows
the division of work in a multi-level system.
• The number of levels in a WBS varies depending
upon the size and complexity of the project.

TECHNIQUES FOR PLANNING &
SCHEDULING
Methods of scheduling
Gantt chart or Bar Chart
Network Analysis Systems (NAS)
• Critical Path Method (CPM) – deterministic approach to scheduling
• Program Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT)
GANTT
CHART OR
BAR CHART
A programmed chart, a bar chart, a
graphical time-scale of the schedule,
developed by Henry L. Gantt.
Characteristics:
• Simple, easy to use/interpret, does not
require extensive interrelationships of
activities
• Difficult and require significant time to
update, does not show
interdependences of activities, does not
integrate costs or resources with the
schedule
• An effective technique for overall
project scheduling but has limited
application for detailed contraction
work.
CRITICAL PATH
METHOD (CPM)
Developed in 1956, now commonly used in
engineering and construction industry.
• The most used NAS for project
management.
• Characteristics:
• Simple concept, computations only require
basic arithmetic,
• The most difficult task is identifying and
interfacing the numerous activities that
are required to complete a project, i.e.,
development of the CPM network diagram.
• If a well-defined WBS is developed first,
the task of developing a CPM diagram is
greatly simplified.
Examples of Critical Path Method
Method I : Activity-On-Node (AON)
Method II : Activity-On-Arrow (AOA)
Scope of the thesis
Advantages and Disadvantages of
Bar Chart
A DVA NTAGES
- Simple graphical
- Easy for general comprehension
- Widespread used in industry
- Mostly used in small project
- Fairly broad planning and
scheduling tools, so they require
less revision and updating than
more sophisticated systems
DIS ADVANTAGES
- Very cumbersome as the number
of line activities, or bars increases
- Logical interconnections and
constraints of the various
activities is not expressed
- Difficult to use it for forecasting
the effects that changes in a
particular activity will have on the
overall schedule
Advantages and Disadvantages of
CPM Method
A DVA NTAGES
- Networks can much more
concisely represent large numbers
of activities
- Much more useful for forecasting
and control
- It identify the most critical
elements in the project schedule
- Easy to adjust if any delay is
happened in the project
DIS ADVANTAGES
- A little bit difficult to understand
the network system
