1.  Be is an irregular verb. It has two forms in the past tense: was and were.
- Yesterday was my birthday. My friends and I were at a restaurant. It wasn’t a big
party, but it was fun.
 Here are some questions and short answers with the past tense of be:
- Were you at home yesterday?
- Yes, I was.
- k?
- No, he wasn’t.
- Were the children tired?
- Yes, they were.
B. Regular Past Tense Verbs

2.  Regular past tense verbs end in -ed.
- He walked to the store yesterday.
- They asked me a question.
- We wanted to go home.
 For a small number of words, you have to double the consonant when you add -ed.
Those words end in in one vowel + one consonant, for example:
- stop - stopped
- drop - dropped
- plan - planned
- prefer - preferred
 We don’t double w, x or y:
- snow - snowed
- fix - fixed
- play - played
 When a verb ends in a consonant + y, we change the y to i when we add -ed:
- study - studied
- carry - carried
- cry - cried
- dry - dried
 We do not change y to i if the verb ends in vowel + y:
- play - played
- enjoy - enjoyed
