and Weise Toys, and some ROS models. A few years back, my
collection consisted of 3000 models, but with a lack of space
in my basement, I started to sell and reduce my collection to
about half of what it was. I have sold most of my conversions,
but some of them are still in my collection. With the dawn of the
internet, a lot changed for me and the biggest flea market at that
time was eBay, once online with my high-speed 64K modem,
the farm model world opened up for me, I could buy toys and
models from around the world…something our millennials don´t
remember.
It was time to widen my horizon and I made plans to visit other
international farm toy shows. In 2008, I travelled with a friend of
mine to the National Farm Toy Show in Dyersville, Iowa, USA.
The “mother of all farm toy shows” was overwhelming for me
because everything was so different. At that time, I already knew
Cathy Scheibe, the person who organized the show every year
at Beckmann High school in Dyersville. As we talked about the
displays, I told her that they looked great but on the other side
of the Atlantic they do better than the America shows here. She
challenged me to build a display and show it in Dyersville and
before I knew it, I had accepted the challenge. Over the few next
years when she visited the LCN Show in Zwolle, Netherlands,
she reminded me about the promise I had made and in 2011, I
showed up with a display in Dyersville. Since the first show in
Dyersville 1978, I was the first competitor from outside the USA,
with the first 1/87 (H0) scale and smallest display ever showed
at the NFTS. I competed against the very popular 1/64 scale
displays and got second place, not bad for the first time I made
a display in 1/87 in a size of 60 x 40 cm. There are no pictures of
this display anymore because my computer failed a few years
later ,but there´s still a video of it on YouTube.
After that first display, the bug bit me, so I promised to come
back with another one in 1/32 scale. In 2016 I went back to
Dyersville with a new display in a bigger suitcase, never dream-
ing I would get first place in the big scale division where you
compete against the 1/16 displays and for the first time in NFTS
history, 5 displays in 1/32 scale. Again, the smallest of displays
at only 90 x 60 cm.
First, I would like to introduce myself, my name is Jacco van
den Broek, born and raised in the Netherlands until the age of
20. In the summer of 1986, the Dutch ministry of defense sent
me to Germany where I worked as a professional soldier at a
maintenance company up in the north of Germany, somewhere
between American and British troops. My time ended in the
autumn of 1993 when I became a civilian again, I stayed in Ger-
many and married my lovely wife.
At that time my intention was to have a model railway, but be-
cause space was limited, I knew that wasn’t possible. Then,
one day, a 15-year-old lad knocked on my door; he was told that
I had small tools, that I was working on model trains and I could
help him with his “project”. Almost every day he came round
with some parts and asked me to drill a hole here and there or
glue this and that, one day I asked him what he was building.
He was a little ashamed to tell me, that he was making a slurry
tanker with a trailing hose distribution out of a spray can and
a crop sprayer from Siku, and that kids of his age didn´t find it
cool playing with farm toys…or playing at all. I told him that he
should bring his bits and bobs over to me and we could do the
project together. Now…I don´t have any farming background
at all, but it was an interesting experience helping him with his
slurry tanker.
In 1995, I visited the Dutch LCN Dronten Show with the young
lad for the first time. From that day, I made the decision to quit
model railroading and start collecting and converting farm mod-
els. Thereafter, I sold all my Maerklin trains and started buying
farm models from the Siku Farmer Series and Britains. At first, it
was mostly Siku, because you could buy them on almost every
street corner and they were not that expensive. Britains was a
different story… those models were hard to find in stores at that
time. The internet marketplace was up and coming and eBay
didn´t exist at the time. You could get the names of vendors and
sellers from other collectors who might have the model you were
looking for and some vendors went to visit the UK to buy rare
models for the collectors in mainland Europe. I bought myself a
fax machine so that I could get sales lists from the vendors and
dealers with the models they had to offer. The late 1990´s was
a great time for collectors and people like me who enjoyedcon-
verting models, the shows in Holland and other countries were
not that big and all the collectors knew each other. It was not
about the money or how many models you have or have sold…
they swapped and gave each other tips and tricks on how to
make a model different. The farm model community was small
and unique.
I did many conversions in the first 10-12 years, today we would
call it “light conversion” - put some other wheels on the model,
original paint, some other decals, rear view mirrors and working
lights and sell it for a profit and use this to expand your collec-
tion. Back in the 1990´s, converting included using other wheels,
front hitches, antennas and rear-view mirrors. Wheels from RC
trucks and cars, front hitches from Siku models, and mirrors
made from plastic and nails. Hunting for scrapped farm toys on
flea markets and little toy fairs, hoping to find a 50 Pence toy
for the cab, wheels or rear hitch or even mint condition farm
toys from back in the day for little money. This was fun, and
still is - finding farm toys for a few quid and adding them to
your collection. Now, 25 years after buying my first model, I´m
still collecting and converting. My early conversions were Siku
models and some Britains, nowadays it´s Wiking, Marge Models
Typical of European or Germany in the early 80´s.
Fendt 309 LSA converted with a front-end loader and
detachable rear duals, MB Trac with Silage cutter and
MB Trac 1000 with Deutz-Fahr loader wagon.
The small heap is older grass silage, the heap at the front
is maize silage and the one at the back is a new grass
silage pile.

Me with the trophy and a happy face.
I came second place in 2019 with
conversions of an Oliver 2655, Min-
neapolis-Moline A4T-Series and
Plainsman 4WD tractors. All con-
versions are based on the Ertl Ol-
iver 2655. The building and base
plate are made out of Styrofoam.
Up until now, I have only made three displays, all for the NFTS and displayed
just once. The first one went to a friend of mine to break it up, I sent the second
one to auction it for charity and the last one went to a collector who was thrilled
by the building. I want to try again in 2021 but it will only be possible when
COVID is over and life is back to normal, so that traveling is possible.

When you get 1st place, you’re not allowed to compete again for the next 2
years, so I built a new 1/32 scale display for the 2019 show and again I was
lucky enough to get 2nd place with my workshop display - a European building
for USA 4-WD Enthusiasts to work on their tractors.

This is a Britain’s pre-production prototype valmet 805
logging set, it’s one of only two I know to exist having
the different exhaust used for steering the front wheels
which Britain’s didn’t put into mass production with the
black mud guards on the rear. It also has the ‘sample
only’ sticker on the roof which I only found the other day
when taking it out the box for photos! I’ve had this model
for almost 30 years. This set was made in very early 1986

At last Britains! A sensible neater way to
secure the model to the inside of the box
by a couple of wire ties. While doing these
reviews, it makes it so much easier to secure
the tractor back in the box. A very good pre-
sentation box for 100 years, congratulations
Britains on this achievement!
General Review
A good gloss finish on the main panels of
the model, the front mudguards and bonnet
sides, toolbox air cleaner, exhaust and lights
are in black. The John Deere emblem on the
front stands proud, all the decals are well
detailed. There is a good lock on the steering
and ample pivot. The engine is well detailed.
The lights all around the tractor are picked
out in silver or red for rear brake lights and
orange for the indicators. The rear linkage
is a normal Britains type so there will be a
choice of machinery to attach behind it. Rea-
sonable detail on the wheels and tyres.
Operators Cab
A very well detailed interior with all the con-
trol levers in place and lever tops picked out
in orange and yellow, the operators seat has
armrests fitted. I could not find a way into the
cab for an operator to be fitted. The steering
wheel centre has the John Deere emblem,
which is a nice touch. Mirrors are fitted and
are sturdy. The cab interior has been painted
in beige, this makes the cab nice and bright
inside.
Overveiw Of Model
Not just a model for the collector, but also a
good sturdy play toy tractor for the younger
generation of carpet farmers. I did try to fit a
UH plough and a SIKU potato hiller but these
would not fit, but I have a SIKU hiller which I
have modified by filing a little of the mounting
pins and it fits well. If the lift lever was off
centre I think it would fit without being filed.
I was a little bit surprised that I could not fit
an operator as I have done in some recent
Britains models. The cab just unclips off the
main body so it’s very easy to fit one of the
Britains drivers. However, a very good and
well detailed tractor. Well worth buying.

Looking in the Box
The model is held in the box with a couple
of wire tires which makes writing these
reviews so much easier. Putting the model
back in the box and securing it for the end
collector with the wires they used before
is a pain in the neck.
General Model Review
A very similar model to the JD 3050. A
good sturdy model tractor with a good
paint finish all around the tractor. Engine
side panels are in black and parts of the
cab. All the decals are clear, the John
Deere emblem on the front panel stands
proud, front weights are fitted to this
tractor and there are no front mudguards
which I think makes it look better for a
replica of an earlier tractor. The steering
lock is good with a good pivot on the front
axle. The engine detail is good and the ex-
haust manifold is different to the JD 3050.
The rear linkage is the standard Britains
type. Wheels and tyres have some detail.
Operators Cab
I could not find a way into the cab to fit an
operator, which is a pity if you wish to dis-
play the tractor onto a diorama. Britains
always make drivers in a sitting position,
so why not make them easy to fit?! The
cab is very well detailed with all the con-
trols in the right place and lever tops in
different colours. A nice beige colour finish
to the interior, mirrors are made sturdy,
so for the younger carpet farmer they will
stand a knock or two.
Overveiw
A very sturdy tractor for both collecting or
for a play toy for the younger generation.
This new range of this very popular tractor
will be a hit with the collectors of this
iconic brand of tractors.

John Deere 3640
Britains Scale 1:32
Looking in the box
Good sturdy box with a couple of wire
tires to release it from the inner box, a well
presented model from Britains.
General Review
Very good paint finish all around the
tractor, decals are clear and the John
Deere emblem on the front panel stands
proud which looks good, the steering has
a good side to side lock and the axle has
a good pivot to allow going over rough
ground. All the road and work lights are
picked out in black with silver, these are
very well detailed. The bonnet sides on
this tractor are in green. The exhaust has
a water trap top fitted. A tool box is fitted
to the right hand side of the chassis, the
rear linkage is the standard Britains type.
Wheels and tyres have some detail, This
will be another tractor that will appeal to
the younger carpet farmer, and the John
Deere collectors.
Operators Cab
The cab, like the other two reviews on the
3050 and 3650, is well detailed with all the
levers and either orange or yellow, some
with black tops and the seat is fitted with
armrests like the other two models. The
steering wheel has the John Deere badge
in the centre which adds a nice touch to
the interior with the beige trim in the cab.
Again, fitting a driver into the cab could be
a challenge, however, on all three tractors
there is a screw underneath the main
body, it may be a way in, but I decided not
to tamper with it. Sturdy mirrors are fitted
with a flashing beacon on the roof.
Model Overveiw
Like the other two John Deere tractors,
these will be popular with the collectors
and the younger generation. They are
strong models, and on a model farm
layout with machines behind them they
would look impressive as a fleet. I think
Britains are on with a winner with these
earlier versions of the tractors.

6T Dumper JCB
Britains Scale 1:32
Looking in the Box
This is a sturdy looking dumper which
will appeal to the JCB collector and the
younger collector as a play toy. It comes
in a sturdy box with a front clear plastic
window.
General Review
The dumper has a good paint finish with
clear decals fitted. The pivot steer has a
reasonable lock from side to side but the
model has no axle pivot. One ram lifts the
tipping body to near vertical position. Also
there is side to side adjustment on the
dumper body. There are some details on
the underside, axle detail and drive shafts
etc. A towing eye is fitted to the rear of
the dumper. Lights are fitted all around the
dumper.
Operators Cab
There is quite a bit of detail inside the
operators cab with foot pedals and gear
lever plus some other bits and pieces to
operate this machine. Good strong mirrors
and a pair of flashing lights on the cab
roof, amber and green. I understand the
green light flashes if the operator is wear-
ing a seat belt! I could not see a way into
the cab to fit a driver.
Model Overveiw
In general, this is a strong model for this
famous brand of machinery. Can be used
as a toy or collectors item. The hobbyists
collecting tractors and farm machinery will
benefit from these cheaper models, they
are both highly collectable and good to
use as a play toy to keep the next genera-
tion of younger carpet farmers buying and
keeping he hobby alive. I wish Britains
would make some of their models with
cabs fitted to make it easy to fit drivers,
They make the drivers so why not make
them easy to fit?

Well presented and the model was secured in
the box, however, the exhaust pipe had broken
off, which must have happned at the factory.
Super glue came to the rescue!
General Review
This new range of classic tractors are looking
very interesting from Britains ERTL, the Inter-
national 1066 Turbo review model has a high
gloss red and cream finish to all the paintwork,
the rear mudguards and bonnet are red plastic.
All the decals are clear and the IH badge stands
proud, the tractor’s front grill is embossed and
the black and silver are well detailed, the en-
gine has a lot of detail too. The steering wheel
steers the front axle with broad fat tyres fitted
and they look the very good. A front weight is
fitted with the IH emblem embossed onto ei-
ther side. The rear wheels and tyres are well
detailed and they are made of plastic. The hy-
draulic lift arms are the standard Britains type
so a lot of the early Britains would look good
behind this tractor. Fitting a driver should not
be an issue on this tractor providing there is
room between the steering wheel and the well
detailed seat. However I tried and neither the
early or more recent Britains drivers would go
straight on. The exhaust pipe has the water
trap top fitted.
Model Overveiw
All in all a very sturdy looking classic tractor
and will prove to be very popular with collec-
tors, one will be going into my collection for
sure as I like the idea of Britains bringing out
the new classic collection, it brings back mem-
ories from my tractor driving days. I am looking
forward to the Fordson E27N and the JD 4020.
I hope they produce more models of this era
onto the market. It’s a pity about the non fitting
drivers but if I put this tractor onto a diorama,
I would find a figure that is stood, I have one
on a sugar beet diorama with a mug of drink in
his hand, stand him near the tractor for a lunch
break, or put a seated figure on a box near the
tractor wheel. I spent many days having my
dinner sitting up on the wheel on a windy day,

General Review
This tractor reminds me of the earlier ERTL

tractor is a heavy model and like the earlier
one it still looks good. It would make a great
collectors item. Eight wheels gives this trac-
tor the aggressive look and would look great
on a diorama with a large piece of machin-
ery towed behind. A nice red gloss finish and
bright decals all around the tractor. The model
has steering on both front and rear axles, the
steering can be placed in crab steer or four
wheel steer, the rear lift linkage is fitted with
a towing hitch and the lift arms have holes in
the ends to accept mounted equipment like a
large plough but this would need to have the
front of the plough stuited to accept the lift
arms, a top link is fitted has well, also double
assistor rams. There’s detail underneath with
steering rams on both front and rear axles
and a track rod on the front and rear axle too.
The wheels have some detail and the tyres
have good tread fitted.
Operators Cab
Fitting a driver into the cab may be a problem
I could not find a way into it. There are screws
underneath so you may find a way into the
cab, the drivers seat looks like it has a seat
belt moulded into it. Plenty of detail inside the
cab with levers for different operation and de-
cals fitted.
Overveiw Of model
Britain ERTL have made a fine job of revamp-
ing this IH Case to make it a great collectors
item, it’s strong enough for the younger car-
pet farmer to put it through the paces and it
would look good with a large cultivator towed
behind just to give the carpet a good rake and
possibly make some dust fly. Well done Brit-
ains ERTL for the fine Prestige model of an
early iconic prairie farm tractor.

New Holland T6175
Tractor & NCDump
Trailer play set
Looking in the Box
Both the tractor and Dump trailer are stur-
dy, well packed and ideal for the younger
collector and carpet farmer.
General Review
The New Holland tractor has a good paint
finish, all the decals are clear and bright,
the tractor is the New Holland T6 175, all
the road and work lights are picked out
in silver and orange for the rear lights, the
blue filler cap is in blue, this adds that
extra bit of detail. The model has a good
steering lock from side to side and the axle
pivots for uneven ground. Front weights
have been added. The rear linkage is the
standard Britains, so mounted equipment
is catered for. The dump trailer has a
spring loaded drawbar. Large twin rams lift
the dump box to a steep angle, this would
be ideal on a sugar beet diorama tipping a
load of beet onto a beet clamp at the end
of a field. I think the rear door should pivot
down, but the review model was stiff so
I did not force the issue, all in all a good
solid trailer with axles that pivot
Operators Cab
A great deal of detail has gone into the op-
erators cab, the seat is blue and grey and
they have added the New Holland emblem
onto it, the rest of the cab interior is in grey
with a passenger seat added. All controls
including the computer screen are posi-
tioned to the right of the driver as normal.
The steering column also has levers on it
for different functions. Drivers mirrors are
well built, so will take a few knocks. Twin
flashing beacons are mounted on the rear
of the cab roof.
Model Overveiw
This outfit looks good and should sell well
to both the younger collector and general
farm machinery collector, as I said in the
review cover, it would be great to have
both items in mud and put onto a diorama
with a beet harvester or just on its own,
Take a picture of a beet heap on a head-
land of a field and use it has a backdrop to
a diorama.

Britains Scale 1:32
General Review
A well presented model of this Fleming
Double bale lifter, with two round bales
supplied in the box. I fitted this to the new
Britains IH Farmhall tractor and it’s an
ideal piece of mounted equipment for any
farm layout with livestock, the loaded mod-
el with the two bales can easily drop off by
a push button on the top of the main frame,
which then releases a catch to drop off the
bales. The review model has a high gloss
paint finish in blue with clear decals of the
company name Fleming on either side and
main frame.
Model Overveiw
A must for any collector of farm equipment,
will be an ideal model to use on a diorama
livestock environment.

clear formed cover to retain it securely.
General Comments
This is a well detailed combine, for either the carpet farmer
from the age of fourteen plus, or for the general model farm
machinery collector. It is well built in diecast with plastic
parts, the paint work has a good gloss finish to it and all
the decals are clear, work and road lights are picked out
in their different colours at the front and rear. However, the
rear light clusters are a little flimsy, the grain tank is fixed
open, with detailed steps into it, and the long reach grain
auger clips into the open position. At the rear, a reasonably
detailed straw chopper is attached, the engine bay detail
is fine. The feed elevator has a pair of rams, this allows
either the grain or maize header to be in a work or transport
position.
Operators Cab
Steps up to the cab are in a light plastic. The cab has work
lights all around the top, a pair of beacons on the cab roof
and folding mirrors either side. Twin seats are fitted and the
interior of the cab is detailed fairly well, I could not find a
way into the cab to fit an operator
Tracks & Wheels
The detail on the tracks and the running gear both drive and
the idler rollers are good. The track cleats are well detailed
and the rear wheels steer but do no pivot from side to side.
Headers
The corn header is moulded in plastic throughout with a
good gloss finish. A pair of rollers are there to assist the
reels to turn, the reel tines do pivot which is a nice touch.
The maize header folds, again all plastic but with more de-
tail than the grain header, the feed auger revolves with two
wheels on the underside. Another nice touch is the pto’s on
either side and a couple of rams are fitted to fold the side
header units up into the transport position.
Steptoes Comments
A good sturdy model of this iconic brand of machinery, for
the collector and carpet farmer in mind. It would look good
on a diorama either in a maize setting or grain. The open
hopper could be filled with grain and to get around the op-
erator he could be stood on the catwalk of the cab looking
into the trailer stood at the side talking to the tractor driver.

PART THREE
PART THREE
For modelling ploughed fields I use carpet tiles, for the 1:76
scale I use the tile straight out of the pack. Next, I will place
the field into my scene. I’ll add a tractor and plough to make
it look more realistic. I cut the tile about half way along the
grain to the shape of the number of furrows on the plough, the
idea is to make it look like it is working. The top picture shows
SIKU 1:50th tractor and the plough working, Siku make a good
range of farm equipment in 1:50th and 1:87th scale. The tile is
then painted in a dark brown with white added to lighten it up.
Next, I add a woodland scatter in earth colour and while the
paint is still wet, I add PVA glue mixed with the paint. For larger
scales I cut the tile in strips and glue at an angle, the picture
shows a New Holland 1:50 scale Siku Tractor and plough. In
both scales I add the work side to the furrow, cut another tile
to suit, then add scatter in a different colour or different shades
of static grass using PVA. For larger scales just cut bigger strips,
I glue the tiles and strips with UHU glue.
Picture above shows a Crawler trailed reversable plough, these
were a common site in the 1970’s, mainly in Lincolnshire fen
area. They were built in four or five furrows by a local Agricul-
tural dealer.
Next, a smaller project, adding extras to a Siku Grimme 150-60 1:32
scale potato harvester. This type of harvester wasn’t popular in the
UK, they were very good in salad potatoes crops. I drove the demo
machine when it first came to Grimme UK in 1999, the first Suffolk
on salads. Then to Lincolnshire, and onto the Scottish borders in main
crop potatoes, then back to Yorkshire. Picture no 4 shows the harvest-
er working in Nr Damme, Northern Germany.
While we were there it worked in very dry hot conditions. We also
went to East Germany to see two four-row Grimme SF3000 self pro-
pelled harvesters lifting potatoes.

The Siku model is reasonably good, I was able to get my hands
on a second machine from the Grimme factory and it gave me
a chance to add modifications to it and build a diorama. The
modifications carried out included the operators cab, making it
pivot, when driving the machine you can pivot the cab sideways
to the right for better vison to the front digging area. The rear
wheels I extended to a wider wheel base, I made a new deviner
web, (A deviner web is a wide spaced web which allows crop to
pass through leaving the potato tops to carry back over onto the
ground). Also, I added an extra bunker end chute and anti roll
flap in the bunker, a long flashing beacon on the cab roof, PTO
drive shaft to the deviner web, repainted cab and interior, added
mirrors, plus I added extra transfers with side stripes and added
two people on the POB, (picking off band) and wheathering with
crop thoughout. The crop of potatoes where bought through Hol-
ly Loves Toys.
Next on the Build list, a SF3000 Four Row Potato Har-
vester, the picture shows the real version working in
Norfolk in 2001. I decided to build this machine around
the 1:50th scale, with the idea to use two Siku 1:50 scale
tractors and two converted trailers on a diorama with
another model of a Grimme DLS two row self propelled
harvester of the same year. The front wheels came from
a set of four row crop wheels from Holly Loves Toys, the
Larger rear wheels were to be used on another project
later on, the rest of the machine I built from scratch
with plastrut. The chassis is made in box section using
Powerbond 806 glue and pinned together. For the en-
gine block I use 10mm foam board, then add the extra
parts to build up the engine. I have found that power-
bond glues this together very well, other glues I use are
Humbrol and sometimes Gorilla glue with a brush in the
bottle.
Building a Grimme four row SF 3000 Self
Propelled Harvester
On the tracks, for glueing plastic to metal, Powerbond 806 is ideal.
The part I had the most trouble building was the operators cab with
it’s curved front window screen and tilted front panel. The roof I
built up in layers of 1mm and 2mm plastic sheets bought from my
local Railway model shop. For the screen I used 1mm clear plastic I
had on stock, I made a card board template for all the clear area one
piece to do both the sides and the front. I then marked it out with
a thin marker pen and cut it to size. To add the curve, I used a piece
of wood the width of the screen and cut and placed it in the centre
part of the screen, then carefully held over a hot steaming Kettle us-
ing thick gloves. After three tyres I managed to get two units made.
The second screen i’m making will be for the Grimme DLS machine.
Both these machines were built during the first Covid 19 lockdown,
as well has several other models from the Grimme Stable.
The picture opposite shows the Grimme DLS two row self propelled
potato harvester. All parts except the wheels were scratch built. I
made this machine at the same time as the SF3000, both machines
are similar. I find while one model has glue drying, you can build
parts for the other, this is the system I used with two other early
Grimme harvesters which used the same chassis design.
The pictures below shows the final build
of the ASA-Lift carrot harvester

ASA build machines to lift many different types of vegetable crops, which include Carrots, Parsnips, Red beet, Oinions,
Leeks and Cabbage etc. One of my model TRS’ will be painted in dark blue, the second machine will be in the new
colour Grimme Red. All the different sub units are held in place with rods, this helps with painting each unit then when
dry it can be all pinned together, The front web and main web use the same pin running though a bracket either side
of the chassis then through the side panels on both the two web units. Then the crop elevator will another pin. Sand
colour Humbrol I use for undercoat, then Humbrol red for top coat, One of the machines I have used Midnight Blue,
both colour are a decent match to the real colours.
Adding the crop, and soil to the machine, is to first painted all the webs with PVA neat glue, then add Woodland sce-
nic soil coloured scatter, then add the carrots, For these I used orange coloured electric wire used on model railway
OO gauge, all you need to do is cut into short lengths and scatter the pieces onto the main and second main webs,
also onto the crop elevator for delivery into the trailer. You can also use this idea in the trailer using a false floor, to
add false floors I use layers of foam board, build up to required level that suits your needs then paint the top layer, to
the crop colour. By using a false floor less crop is used with the effect of a full trailer load.
The Next Build
A Model Of the 1965 Mobile Pea Viner
A Model Of the 1965 Mobile Pea Viner
The next new build is a Pea Viner I drove for a few years in the 1960’s. The season would last between
six to seven weeks, with two operators on twelve hour shifts. Every weekend we would work eighteen
hour shifts, from night shift to day shift. For a young lad of seventeen, the pay was good, I remember
throughout the year 1970 I managed to take home £1,000, twenty quid a week, I worked long hours for
this. These photos were taken on a Kodak 44A camera, so the pictures are not too clear, I still have the
camera and it’s some sixty years old!
I built the chassis first, this was made with a Plastruct 4.8mm box with inserts at either end, 3.2mm. All
the parts were cut and pinned with 1.6mm coated wire, all parts glued using Powerbond glue. Scale is
1:32 approx. When this machine is finished and displayed, the tractor used on the diorama will be a MF
1080, It would have been nice if there was a MF175 in 1:32 scale, but I have not seen one, has anyone
seen one? Next, the axels for the wheels are built using the same Plastruct box as the chassis, also the
under conveyer, followed by the ends to hold the drum in position and centre beater bar.

Announced last year in the prototype phase at Nuremberg Toys Fair,
Wiking released one of the first models of the Claas Xerion 5000 Track TS.
The German manufacturer offers us the latest update from Claas of the
Xerion 5000. This version is equipped with tracks instead of wheels but
note that a wheeled version is planned.
To begin with, the packaging is as usual, with a shiny white cardboard out-
er box and polystyrene inner packaging. 2 beautiful photos of the machine
are printed. The miniature itself is impressive in terms of size.
Under the chassis, the transmission elements are well detailed. There are
2 3-point hitches, the same used on previous versions - unfortunately they
are still fixed with awful rivets which could receive a touch of paint to em-
bellish the model.
FARM MODELLER · ISSUE FOUR
40
The independently steered axles are fitted with
Zuidberg stamped tracks (the Dutch manufactur-
er of transmission components). The elements in
question are very well finished, the tracks are well
proportioned. The undercarriage raises the tractor
higher with tracks than when fitted with wheels,
therefore, the ground clearance seems a little high
to me. I have no examples to compare (525 mm on
the track version at scale 1:1) the miniature scales
up at 730 mm which is quite substantial.
Moving to the cabin, this is fixed as per the real
one and is the latest generation. All the instru-
ments are there, such as the Cmotion controller
and the CEBIS screen.
The cabin is equipped with an opening door and a
few accessories to complete the finishing touches
such as the presence of a fire extinguisher at the
rear, a few hoses and numerous headlights around
the front.

The front of the model is imposing like the real
one, but the big downside is the absence of
a hinge for opening the bonnet, which leaves
one looking through this semblance of a grill
which is no longer there, instead, there is a
thin piece of transparent black plastic cov-
ering the MTU 530 CV engine block (Wiking
have done far better at modelling grills in the
past).
At the rear of the tractor, we find the platform
which can receive trailed equipment thanks
to the ‘5th wheel’ coupling, there are also
hydraulic elements to connect them to the
tractor. The platform can receive equipment
specifically dedicated to Xerion.

George Gilliland is nine years old and has been collecting models for
the last four years. His mother Ashley and his father Ian are sixth gen-
eration farmers on the land nestling at the foot of Scrabo Tower near
Newtownards. Their farm overlooks the famous beauty spot of Strangford
Lough, County Down.
He received his farmyard diorama from Santa about four years ago and
recently he was given a very detailed farmhouse as a birthday present.
George especially likes the “Old School” tractors, the Britains David
Brown 996, the Britains Ford TW35 and the Britains Ford TW 10, these
are his favourites.
George has called his farmyard the Blackmountain Farm, and he adds
more detail every day. His first tractor was a Bruder Massey Ferguson and
he now has a big collection of mostly Britains tractors and implements.
His mother and father have told him he will be allowed the more delicate
models when he is older. In the meantime he would love to have either a
John Deere 6710 Forager or a John Deere 7810 tractor.
As his diorama gets ever bigger he’s hoping his father buys him a shed to
house his collection and his mother can have her living room back!

Announced before its big sister, the 8900 TT, here we present the 6900 TT
after a few months of delay. The model of the 6000 series, which is part of
the straw walker machines and whose main structure is identical to the 8000
series, is based on a 6-walker machine.
There are some differences, but these are really subtle. The rear most upper
housing which hides the air filter is no longer present, the rear beacon is not
positioned in the same way, but the big difference comes from the Vario 930
header which we will talk about later. The Claas box is more compact than
for the 8000 models, the front face is printed with a photo of the machine,
the inner packaging is a polystyrene box.
First under the chassis, as on the previous model nothing exceptional, a
plastic moulding representing the structure of the machine and various
components such as the box rods, the feet of grain tank, auger, elevators
and the fuel filler.

The Terra Trac undercarriage is identical to the 8000,
perfectly represented, the tracks turned and the under-
carriage oscillates. Another version of track would have
been welcome. Regarding the rear axle, the latter steers
slightly oscillate the pendulum and moulded rod system,
and finally, 2 small springs at the bottom for suspension.
The cabin is identical, we find the latest generation with
the field scanner integrated into the roof. All the finish-
es are there; the guardrails are very thin; we find various
working and main lights everywhere on the front fascia
and the interior of the cab is fitted with all the equipment
necessary for operating the machine (C MOTION and
CBIS control). The catwalk of the 6900, equipped with a
removable ladder, is identical to its big sister.
Regarding the exterior of the model, one downside is that
the covers do not open of course, as per the other mod-
els. Different parts of the machine are visible such as the
engine outlet (heart of all the drives) and the DPF and the
exhaust outlet. The MAN D26 507hp engine is not visible
because of the closed hood. Dynamic cooling is also very
well reproduced thanks to the photo-etched grid which
gives it a lot of realism. The air treatment system is visible
with the filter housing which is extended by a large tube
which runs along the radiator and engine.

The 13,500 litre grain tank is an option on the real one, (identical to 8800 in reality), the latter is
finely reproduced and manually functional, there’s no impact on folding because the tarpaulins
are very flexible. The panels are articulated by means of small, well-hidden hinges. The interior
of the grain tank gives access to a ladder to go down inside and there is an auger mounted on
a spring, which allows this to lift by itself when opening. Auger model 5 XL is represented, the
same as its big sister, the latter is also available as an option on the 6900 because it can take
a header of 10.80 m. Note that the augers are offered according to the cutting widths. In our
case, we would have liked a 4 XL example which would have been more logical and brought a
little more difference to the 8000.
Let’s go back to the front to look at the chain or belt conveyor of your choosing, which is the
same as other models. We will recognize the vacuum system and it is very well-done, vacu-
uming dust with its imposing elbow and side ejection. Finally, at the back we find the straw
chopper, with large tubing to protect the rear of the machine.
The 930 Vario header measures 303 mm in overall width. The reels are movable, up, down and
forward, they are equipped with small teeth. The frame of the latter remains simple and the drive
gimbal is not really the best finished, you have to be content with a piece of flexible plastic that
dangles which I think is quite average in terms of quality for a brand like Marge Models.
Concerning the header trolley, we have the basic model with drawbar as it is for the 8000, but
shorter. The header is held correctly thanks to small lug which maintains it on the central beam.
Marge Models has succeeded in its aim in terms of mould use, but knowing that there is a slight
difference in size at 1/1, which represents only a few mm at 1/32 we would have hoped to see
more differences. After having analysed the exposed parts of the hoods and some interior parts
of the latter, I can tell you that the differences are miniscule.
So, a note to the purist of the brand, the 6000 range, will be completed by 3 other models 6800
TT, 6900 and 6800 with wheels.

Out Of The Box
The box is made out of thin card, howev-
er, the model is enclosed in polystyrene
to keep it well secured within the box.
General Appearance
First impression is a very well detailed
model by Wiking, the paint finish is su-
perb throughout, the decals on the bon-
net are clear and the front logo stands
proud, there is a small toolbox on the
front left side with a JD logo on it. The
top of the bonnet has vents right through
and at the front there are mesh air vents.
The front lights are well detailed (A nice
touch would be to have theselLight up)
The bonnet will lift up to display the en-
gine.
Operators Cab
The cab is fitted with folding mirrors ei-
ther side and top flashing beacons, also
forward facing work lights either side
and each side of the cab roof two work
lights plus four rear facing lights, the rear
window opens and the nearside cab
door too. The exhaust stack is on the
right side of the cab and the air cleaner
is on the left.
The steps up to the cab are well detailed
and a nice touch are the hand rails both
on the steps and at the top, on the small
catwalk. The Cab interior has a lot of de-
tail with twin seats, computer scene and
pockets on the right side for odds and
ends and a pair of foot pedals, which are
visible when the cab door is open.

Tracks
All four track units are very well detailed
especially the top drive rollers. There are
bottom idlers and centre rollers, the rub-

Elsewhere in this magazine, you will learn about the trials and tribulations which preceded our return to the
Vintage Model Tractor Market place. To start the ball rolling, we are bringing you new and subtly improved versions
of the 1/32 scale tractor kits we launched in the 1980s. Initially, these kits are available in limited numbers due to lead
time constraints on deliveries from our sub-contactors to meet demand during the current Covid restrictions.

Browns Models, 19 Manor Road, Tynemouth, North Shields, Tyne and Wear NE30 4RJ
1936 Ferguson Brown Model A
The first true production Ferguson tractor, featuring their 3 point linkage, was produced for them by David Brown. The model
depicted features the Coventry Climax engine and is available with either Steel Wheels or Rubber Tyres and optional mudguards
These kits are available at £70 each.
John Deere Model B
Introduced in the mid 30s, the originals
were referred to as “Unstyled”.
The second iteration from the 40s was
essentially the same tractor but with
modernised tinwork, hence “Styled”.
Both came in 3 forms, Tricycle (Paired
front wheels), BN Single front wheel, or
BW, with a wide front axle.
The modeller can choose solid or
spoked wheels, and optional mudguards.
These kits are available at £85 each.
The driver featured is available separately for £6 each.
1922 Crossmount Case
For the steam age railway modeller,
add interest with a OO/HO scale
Crossmount Case tractor for that
period look to your layout.
This kit is available at £20.
This will shortly be joined by a matching
2 furrow trailed plough.

Out Of The Box
First impressions, taking the model out of the
box, it’s a very well packed tractor and the
detail is fantastic.
General Review
The detail on this Valtra is out of this world,
from front to back with its burnt orange
colour scheme and matt black mudguards,
the detailed front linkage complete with twin
assistor rams and top link. The steering on
the review model was limited, a V logo on
the front is in chrome with chrome around
the headlights, the front axle pivots, the Valtra
logo on the bonnet sides are also embossed.
Looking at all the work lights around the tractor
they have the look of LED’s, even the indicators,
this model has been well thought out. Most of
the engine detail is covered with the bonnet,
but all modern tractors are the same, The steps
into the cab are a little flimsy so care is needed
when handling the tractor. Rear linkage is very
well detailed complete with top link. All the
wheels and tyres are well moulded too.
Drivers Cab
I could not find a way into the cab to fit a driver,
however, I would say this Valtra will be placed
in a collectors glass cabinet for safe keeping.
There’s ample detail in the cab with all the
controls that you would find in this modern
tractor. Including foot pedals, computer screen
etc. Mirrors fold down the sides of the cab
and the sun roof will let extra light into this
workplace. Twin flashing lights and radio arial
will need handling with care.
Steptoes Comments
A brilliant Valtra model, compliments to the
design team at Universal Hobbies. I understand
the Valtra G 135 will be available in different
colours. The Orange Valtra will be limited to
1000 pieces.
There are also three more colours available
for the Valtra G135 Tractor, have a look on
the next page!

Out Of The Box
Again, a well packed model with screw fix-
ings to a base plate and a couple of wire fit-
tings around the front axle. The box is made
of good quality card with a stiffer card around
the plastic base holding the model.
General Review
A good sturdy well put together model with a
lot of detail from top to bottom, the paint fin-
ish has high gloss to it, the decals all around
the bonnet are clear and bright, the trac-
tor castings are very good with a lot of de-
tail around the front with underslung weight
block, the engine again has great detail on
both sides. Looking underneath the tractor,
the detail on the front and rear axles is superb
with drive shafts and final drives all very well
cast and there is some pivot on the front axle,
the wheel castings with the PAVT rims have
great detail and the tyres are well moulded.
The rear linkage is the type that will accept
lift equipment. One thing that is missing are
front lights.
Operators Cab
I could not see a way in to the cab, however,
there are small screws either side of the cab
under the mudguards, this may be a way in
to the cab to fit a driver. There’s detail in the
cab, but what you have to remember is when
this tractor was made, the controls for the
driver were not like they are today, so I feel
the control and dials are ideal. There are foot
pedals for brake and clutch and hydraulic le-
vers. Mirrors are fitted either side of the cab,
and work lights on the rear, steps are fitted to
both sides for entry into the cab.
Steptoes Comments
This model is a credit to the Universal Hob-
bies team, With a limited edition of 1000 piec-
es this tractor model will soon sell out. A must
for Ford collectors and collectors of all types
of model tractors. This tractor fitted to a early
Dowdswell plough model (which were made
several years ago) would look great on a di-
orama. Food for thought.

Model Reviews
This Replicagri Renault 56 is one of the first new models of the year, re-
leased several weeks ago. Tt has pleased collectors of the diamond brand.
Overall, the miniature is well proportioned and many details are present.
Under the chassis there is nothing inparticular in terms of detail, on the
other hand the steering front axle shows the rod system which pushes the
steering rod is removable.
The imposing one-piece hood lifts to give us access to the 3-cylinder unit
MWM D325-3 of 46 HP. Various components such as the intake pipes and
oil and diesel filters are well represented as is the exhaust with exit below.
The driving position is well reproduced with a seat with mechanical sus-
pension and the lift control is very well represented, the dashboard is also
well detailed.
The rear of the tractor is not bad either, there is a 3-point hitch, the handles
on the arms are well represented, a tool bar and a top link are included
with the tractor. Overall we have a nice little model, despite the presence
of some rivets but it will find its place on different diorama stages.

Resin Tractor
Schuco Scale 1:32
Out Of The Box
Light card box with the model in a second
box of polystyrene, the tractor is held in the
box with two screws on a plastic type plinth.
The feft hand side mirror had come off but
that’s an easy fix.
General Comments
Another resin model to review by Schuco,
the Same Hercules 160 tractor in 1:32 scale.
The satin paint finish is on the dull side,
however, this light model has good detail-
ing around the front grille, the head lights
are inset with a clear cover over them. The
bonnet has bright decals fitted and there
are seethrough grooves down the bonnet
on both sides which shows the engine, this
is a nice touch. Why an all resin model I
ask myself? They are lighter than diecast,
but not as strong in other areas, both the
resin models that I have reviewed recently
have had bits either broken or fall off. I think
more detail can be put into certain parts of
a model with resin, for example, the grooves
in tractor bonnets or where the model needs
strength like the basic chassis. It needs to
be diecast, or a stronger material than resin.
Operators Cab
Looking through the cab windows the driv-
ers seat looks a bit on the large side. The is
no opening to put a driver into the cab, the
Dash board is well detailed with dials etc,
Hydraulic Linkages
The detail on the rear linkage is ok, but there
is no movement.
Wheels & Tyres
Detailing on the wheel rims is quite good
and tyres are reasonably well detailed.
Steptoes Comments
Collectors of this famous brand of tractor
will add it to there collection, but this may
depend on the price. It will be a model that
will need a lot of care when handling and
best kept in a cabinet.
Thanks Steptoe!

Out Of The Box
The Ferguson 35 comes in a light well dis-
played card box with model enclosed in a
second box made of polystyrene to keep the
model secure, removing it from the box for
the review is easy with no screws to take out.
I’m impressed with the way Universal Hobbies
have packed this model for the end customer.
However, the engine oil filter was not glued and
in the box loose, no big deal, just a dab of glue
would cure this. And the right side mudguard is
a little loose.
General Comments
I remember when the real version came onto
the market place, with the grey and gold
paintwork. Several local smallholders were
some of the first customers to buy this new
tractor. This tractor would possibly be a follow
on from a Ferguson TE 20, their only tractor.
The model Paintwork has a good gloss finish in
both colours. With 1:16 you get a lot of detail
and Universal Hobbies deserve credit for the
detail from front to back with the amount that is
shown. Even the small toolbox on the left side
opens. The bonnet opens to reveal the engine
in great detail, pity about the oil filter, it did slip
back into its mounting easily but needs a spot
of glue. All the operators controls are where
they should be, even the gear levers have
socks at there bases. The hydraulic lift controls
are on the right of the drivers seat.
Hydraulic Rear Lift
The hydraulic is again well detailed right down
to the hook, checked that the chains are in
place but there’s no top link fitted. A hydraulic
trailer pipe connection is on the left side of the
seat. Clutch and brake pedals are well detailed
down to the catch to lock the brake pedals
together for road use.
Wheels & Tyres
All wheels are detailed well and tyres are well
moulded.
Comments
A well presented model of this iconic Ferguson
tractor, no points are deducted for the two
items not secured on the model so 10/10 to the
Universal Hobbies team for such a true-to-life
scale model.

Out Of The Box
The model is well secured within the second part of
the box, the outside case is fairly strong has well.
The one I have for review, I think, is a dealer box.
The only thing I don’t like are the wires that hold the
tractor within the box should be plastic.
General Appearance
The front weight block is packed separate and is
easy fitted to the front linkage, movement up and
down is good and there’s also a moveable top link.
A fairly heavy tractor with a very good paint finish in
red and satin black on the front and rear mud-
guards’ outer edges. The bonnet is well moulded
with good clear decals on the sides and front with
the MF badge. All the lights are well moulded with a
touch of silver paint, I also noticed two small yellow
dots on the front left corner, these look like a pair of
external spool valves for front mounted equipment.
The side light clusters on the cab front need to be
treated with care but are well detailed, the side
mouldings on the offside of the cab have good
detail and the left side fuel tanks with a blue cap. All
these little touches add that little bit extra to make a
fine model. Rear lights are well detailed.
Operators Cab
The operators cab is fitted with twin mirrors which
are fixed, could not find a way in to the cab to fit an
operator. There are three pedals on the cab floor
and the interior is very well detailed with all the dif-
ferent control levers on the side console and around
the steering wheel. The main seat is coloured in light
blue with the MF logo on the backrest, a small extra
seat is also fitted. Flashing beacons are also fitted
to the cab roof. Window wipers are on both front
and back windows. Top cab lights are fitted to the
front and rear of the cab roof.
Rear Linkage
The rear lift arms will raise up and down and will
lock, they look like they would accept lift machinery
available on the market. The top link is moulded into
position, which is a bit strange as the front top link
is adjustable. Why not do the rear one the same?
A towing hook is fitted so that trailed machines are
catered for. A selection of spool valves are detailed
in to this moulding at the rear
Wheels & Tyres
The front axel pivots but there’s no lock from side to
side on the review model. Reasonable detail on the
wheels and tyres.
General Comments
A model well worth buying for any collectors cabi-
net, or for display on a diorama. Mine will go onto a
diorama with a trailer in tow loaded with spuds.

Out Of The Box
Light card outer box with the model enclosed within
a polystyrene box. I notice two small issues, one of
the screws holding the front track rod had come out,
but I screwed it back in, the second issue was that
the check chain on the rear linkage had come adrift.
General Comments
This model is the most detailed model I had the
pleasure of reviewing, wherever you look, the scale of
the detail is stunning. The blue paint work has a good
gloss finish to it. At the front, the detail is great on the
starting handle with the wire retaining clip to hold it
in position when not in use, the embossed radiator
with the Fordson logos on the front and down the
sides, the two headlights have even got the electric
wires to them. The engine detail is a work of art, with
the throttle rod and choke rods in position. PTO belt
pulley with the lever to engage it just like the real
tractor! Electric cables connect to the starter motor.
The exhaust has been touched up at the bottom with
brown paint to look like the paint has been burnt off,
there is so much detail to mention! Driver controls
are all there with foot brake pedals and clutch pedal.
The battery box is mounted at the back of the bonnet
with a console and a few dials. A large toolbox is
situated on the left side of the engine.
Hydraulic Linkage
Everything in this area is detailed to a high standard
with check chains on the arms and an extra chain
from one arm to the other, one side of this had come
loose. The swinging drawbar has the pin through it.
There is a foot plate below the top link mounting but
no top link is present.
Wheels & Tyres
All the wheels are well detailed and tyres well
moulded like the rest of this model.
Steptoes Comments
There’s only one word to describe this true replica
of the iconic Fordson E27N, Brilliant. 10/10 top
marks Universal Hobbies, this is a must for all you
collectors
“A short story about a E27N that collected potatoes
from the farm I worked on 55 years ago. They were
collected for stock feed that had been bagged up
in the field, the tractor was fitted with a Perkins P6
engine, the operator, a chap in his late twentys,
would bring a spare trailer to be loaded by the gang
picking the crop. On his return with a second trailer,
he would drop it half way down the field then would
do his party piece: he would go full throttle in top
gear down the field, then brakes full on with the
tractor sliding in the loose soil, engage reverse gear
and clutch out with the tractor still going forward
while the rear wheels were going backwards. This he
would do many times through the season. And never
a repair bill, these tractors were bullet proof.”

Out Of The Box
This model arrived in a light card box with model
held in a second polystyrene container, this gives
extra support for this large model (pet hate!), the
wire that holds tractor in the polystyrene box
passes though plastic holders and then twists
underneath. For review purposes you have to
retain the wire to put back again once reviewed
and pictures are taken.
General Comments
Once again, a well detailed model from Universal
Hobbies. The paintwork has a good gloss finish
to it in both the blue and off white colours. All
the decals are clear, the front Ford badge stands
proud on the mesh grill. Front headlights are
recessed into the front it looks great. A large
set of front weights are fixed to the front frame
and are well cast. The engine has a lot of detail,
which is normal for Universal Hobbies on this
size of scale, the exhaust is detachable and the
air cleaner has a nice glass pre cleaner unit at
the top. The left side bonnet lifts to reveal more
engine detail.
Operators Cab
The cab steps, side lights and mirrors on each
side of the cab are flimsy so care is needed
when handling this model. There are big indi-
cators on each of the mudguards and a good
size ploughing light is fitted. Cab interior is well
detailed but I couldn’t find a way into the cab,
however, for a model this size and quality I don’t
think it will be put onto a muddy diorama, this
will be a model for the serious Ford collector
and live in a glass cabinet. Another nice touch is
around the windows, the rubber which holds the
windows in is well shown in the moulding of the
main cab panels.
Rear Linkage
The rear of the tractor back end is well detailed,
showing the pto screw on cap, swinging draw-
bar, lift arms with check chains and the left side
an assistor am. No top link is supplied on this
model.
Wheels & Tyres
Front and rear wheels and tyres are moulded
with good detail, the rear wheel weights look the
part.
Steptoes Comments on the review .
Universal Hobbies should be proud of this replica
of this classic Ford tractor, and a must for the
serious collector.10/10

  • 4. WWW.FARMMODELLERMAGAZINE.COM FARM MODELLER · ISSUE FOUR A Dutchman in Germany Jacco van den Broek 03 and Weise Toys, and some ROS models. A few years back, my collection consisted of 3000 models, but with a lack of space in my basement, I started to sell and reduce my collection to about half of what it was. I have sold most of my conversions, but some of them are still in my collection. With the dawn of the internet, a lot changed for me and the biggest flea market at that time was eBay, once online with my high-speed 64K modem, the farm model world opened up for me, I could buy toys and models from around the world…something our millennials don´t remember. It was time to widen my horizon and I made plans to visit other international farm toy shows. In 2008, I travelled with a friend of mine to the National Farm Toy Show in Dyersville, Iowa, USA. The “mother of all farm toy shows” was overwhelming for me because everything was so different. At that time, I already knew Cathy Scheibe, the person who organized the show every year at Beckmann High school in Dyersville. As we talked about the displays, I told her that they looked great but on the other side of the Atlantic they do better than the America shows here. She challenged me to build a display and show it in Dyersville and before I knew it, I had accepted the challenge. Over the few next years when she visited the LCN Show in Zwolle, Netherlands, she reminded me about the promise I had made and in 2011, I showed up with a display in Dyersville. Since the first show in Dyersville 1978, I was the first competitor from outside the USA, with the first 1/87 (H0) scale and smallest display ever showed at the NFTS. I competed against the very popular 1/64 scale displays and got second place, not bad for the first time I made a display in 1/87 in a size of 60 x 40 cm. There are no pictures of this display anymore because my computer failed a few years later ,but there´s still a video of it on YouTube. After that first display, the bug bit me, so I promised to come back with another one in 1/32 scale. In 2016 I went back to Dyersville with a new display in a bigger suitcase, never dream- ing I would get first place in the big scale division where you compete against the 1/16 displays and for the first time in NFTS history, 5 displays in 1/32 scale. Again, the smallest of displays at only 90 x 60 cm. First, I would like to introduce myself, my name is Jacco van den Broek, born and raised in the Netherlands until the age of 20. In the summer of 1986, the Dutch ministry of defense sent me to Germany where I worked as a professional soldier at a maintenance company up in the north of Germany, somewhere between American and British troops. My time ended in the autumn of 1993 when I became a civilian again, I stayed in Ger- many and married my lovely wife. At that time my intention was to have a model railway, but be- cause space was limited, I knew that wasn’t possible. Then, one day, a 15-year-old lad knocked on my door; he was told that I had small tools, that I was working on model trains and I could help him with his “project”. Almost every day he came round with some parts and asked me to drill a hole here and there or glue this and that, one day I asked him what he was building. He was a little ashamed to tell me, that he was making a slurry tanker with a trailing hose distribution out of a spray can and a crop sprayer from Siku, and that kids of his age didn´t find it cool playing with farm toys…or playing at all. I told him that he should bring his bits and bobs over to me and we could do the project together. Now…I don´t have any farming background at all, but it was an interesting experience helping him with his slurry tanker. In 1995, I visited the Dutch LCN Dronten Show with the young lad for the first time. From that day, I made the decision to quit model railroading and start collecting and converting farm mod- els. Thereafter, I sold all my Maerklin trains and started buying farm models from the Siku Farmer Series and Britains. At first, it was mostly Siku, because you could buy them on almost every street corner and they were not that expensive. Britains was a different story… those models were hard to find in stores at that time. The internet marketplace was up and coming and eBay didn´t exist at the time. You could get the names of vendors and sellers from other collectors who might have the model you were looking for and some vendors went to visit the UK to buy rare models for the collectors in mainland Europe. I bought myself a fax machine so that I could get sales lists from the vendors and dealers with the models they had to offer. The late 1990´s was a great time for collectors and people like me who enjoyedcon- verting models, the shows in Holland and other countries were not that big and all the collectors knew each other. It was not about the money or how many models you have or have sold… they swapped and gave each other tips and tricks on how to make a model different. The farm model community was small and unique. I did many conversions in the first 10-12 years, today we would call it “light conversion” - put some other wheels on the model, original paint, some other decals, rear view mirrors and working lights and sell it for a profit and use this to expand your collec- tion. Back in the 1990´s, converting included using other wheels, front hitches, antennas and rear-view mirrors. Wheels from RC trucks and cars, front hitches from Siku models, and mirrors made from plastic and nails. Hunting for scrapped farm toys on flea markets and little toy fairs, hoping to find a 50 Pence toy for the cab, wheels or rear hitch or even mint condition farm toys from back in the day for little money. This was fun, and still is - finding farm toys for a few quid and adding them to your collection. Now, 25 years after buying my first model, I´m still collecting and converting. My early conversions were Siku models and some Britains, nowadays it´s Wiking, Marge Models Typical of European or Germany in the early 80´s. Fendt 309 LSA converted with a front-end loader and detachable rear duals, MB Trac with Silage cutter and MB Trac 1000 with Deutz-Fahr loader wagon. The small heap is older grass silage, the heap at the front is maize silage and the one at the back is a new grass silage pile.
  • 5. WWW.FARMMODELLERMAGAZINE.COM FARM MODELLER · ISSUE FOUR Me with the trophy and a happy face. I came second place in 2019 with conversions of an Oliver 2655, Min- neapolis-Moline A4T-Series and Plainsman 4WD tractors. All con- versions are based on the Ertl Ol- iver 2655. The building and base plate are made out of Styrofoam. Up until now, I have only made three displays, all for the NFTS and displayed just once. The first one went to a friend of mine to break it up, I sent the second one to auction it for charity and the last one went to a collector who was thrilled by the building. I want to try again in 2021 but it will only be possible when COVID is over and life is back to normal, so that traveling is possible. Wiking Fendt 1050 with Vredestein Traxxion wheels. ROS Joskin 3-Axle Muckspreader with wooden protection beams on top and a rock catcher.Other wheels and tires to make it more interesting. Wiking John Deere 6210R with Trel- leborg tires and US-Wheelcenters at the rear, a Minion front weight and a ROS Joskin Vacu-Vargo slurry tanker with other wheels, mudguards, extra hydraulic tank, slurry hoses and new style Joskin Decals. Wiking Fendt 828 S4 with S3 Trelle- borg wheels and detachable, small row-crop duals with MOLCON adapt- ers. This is one of my early conversions of the Britains MB Trac 1500. Paint- ed in bright and dark green, an ex- haust of Siku Ford TW35 and self- made aluminium rims for the duals and decals of a Bruder 1500….great models in the late 1990´s A recent conversion of a Schuco Schlüter Super Trac 2500 TVL. Con- verted with Alliance wheels, a 3D- printed front hitch by www.steini- trecker.de and some other details like my own created and made wa- ter slide decals. A not finished project; A Norscott Claas Jaguar 880 Fieldshuttle. I see this one as a kind of prototype for the next one I´ll build. A small part of my collection Another small part of my collection And another small part of my collec- tion 04 When you get 1st place, you’re not allowed to compete again for the next 2 years, so I built a new 1/32 scale display for the 2019 show and again I was lucky enough to get 2nd place with my workshop display - a European building for USA 4-WD Enthusiasts to work on their tractors.

Passionate about agriculture since I was little, I have been collecting agricultural miniatures for more than 10 years, mainly artisanal agricultural models and I make a few. I am also passionate about photography, which gives me the opportunity to share some photos on my Facebook page ‘Clément and his miniatures’ 1) Modification of a Weise Toys Fendt 306 LS. This 305 LS is a replica of my grandfather’s tractor. On this tractor I changed the front wheels to period ones, the rear linkage and modified an Agram HM 24 removable loader 05

  • 8. WWW.FARMMODELLERMAGAZINE.COM FARM MODELLER · ISSUE FOUR 07 This is a Britain’s pre-production prototype valmet 805 logging set, it’s one of only two I know to exist having the different exhaust used for steering the front wheels which Britain’s didn’t put into mass production with the black mud guards on the rear. It also has the ‘sample only’ sticker on the roof which I only found the other day when taking it out the box for photos! I’ve had this model for almost 30 years. This set was made in very early 1986 Simon Wheelers Rare Britains Prototype Valmet 805 Tractor Logging Set
  • 10. WWW.FARMMODELLERMAGAZINE.COM FARM MODELLER · ISSUE FOUR John Deere 3050 Britains 1:32 Scale 09
  • 11. WWW.FARMMODELLERMAGAZINE.COM FARM MODELLER · ISSUE FOUR 10 John Deere 3050 Britains Scale 1:32 At last Britains! A sensible neater way to secure the model to the inside of the box by a couple of wire ties. While doing these reviews, it makes it so much easier to secure the tractor back in the box. A very good pre- sentation box for 100 years, congratulations Britains on this achievement! General Review A good gloss finish on the main panels of the model, the front mudguards and bonnet sides, toolbox air cleaner, exhaust and lights are in black. The John Deere emblem on the front stands proud, all the decals are well detailed. There is a good lock on the steering and ample pivot. The engine is well detailed. The lights all around the tractor are picked out in silver or red for rear brake lights and orange for the indicators. The rear linkage is a normal Britains type so there will be a choice of machinery to attach behind it. Rea- sonable detail on the wheels and tyres. Operators Cab A very well detailed interior with all the con- trol levers in place and lever tops picked out in orange and yellow, the operators seat has armrests fitted. I could not find a way into the cab for an operator to be fitted. The steering wheel centre has the John Deere emblem, which is a nice touch. Mirrors are fitted and are sturdy. The cab interior has been painted in beige, this makes the cab nice and bright inside. Overveiw Of Model Not just a model for the collector, but also a good sturdy play toy tractor for the younger generation of carpet farmers. I did try to fit a UH plough and a SIKU potato hiller but these would not fit, but I have a SIKU hiller which I have modified by filing a little of the mounting pins and it fits well. If the lift lever was off centre I think it would fit without being filed. I was a little bit surprised that I could not fit an operator as I have done in some recent Britains models. The cab just unclips off the main body so it’s very easy to fit one of the Britains drivers. However, a very good and well detailed tractor. Well worth buying. Thanks Steptoe!

  • 14. WWW.FARMMODELLERMAGAZINE.COM FARM MODELLER · ISSUE FOUR 13 John Deere 3650 Britains Scale 1:32 Looking in the Box The model is held in the box with a couple of wire tires which makes writing these reviews so much easier. Putting the model back in the box and securing it for the end collector with the wires they used before is a pain in the neck. General Model Review A very similar model to the JD 3050. A good sturdy model tractor with a good paint finish all around the tractor. Engine side panels are in black and parts of the cab. All the decals are clear, the John Deere emblem on the front panel stands proud, front weights are fitted to this tractor and there are no front mudguards which I think makes it look better for a replica of an earlier tractor. The steering lock is good with a good pivot on the front axle. The engine detail is good and the ex- haust manifold is different to the JD 3050. The rear linkage is the standard Britains type. Wheels and tyres have some detail. Operators Cab I could not find a way into the cab to fit an operator, which is a pity if you wish to dis- play the tractor onto a diorama. Britains always make drivers in a sitting position, so why not make them easy to fit?! The cab is very well detailed with all the con- trols in the right place and lever tops in different colours. A nice beige colour finish to the interior, mirrors are made sturdy, so for the younger carpet farmer they will stand a knock or two. Overveiw A very sturdy tractor for both collecting or for a play toy for the younger generation. This new range of this very popular tractor will be a hit with the collectors of this iconic brand of tractors. Thanks Steptoe!

  • 17. WWW.FARMMODELLERMAGAZINE.COM FARM MODELLER · ISSUE FOUR 16 John Deere 3640 Britains Scale 1:32 Looking in the box Good sturdy box with a couple of wire tires to release it from the inner box, a well presented model from Britains. General Review Very good paint finish all around the tractor, decals are clear and the John Deere emblem on the front panel stands proud which looks good, the steering has a good side to side lock and the axle has a good pivot to allow going over rough ground. All the road and work lights are picked out in black with silver, these are very well detailed. The bonnet sides on this tractor are in green. The exhaust has a water trap top fitted. A tool box is fitted to the right hand side of the chassis, the rear linkage is the standard Britains type. Wheels and tyres have some detail, This will be another tractor that will appeal to the younger carpet farmer, and the John Deere collectors. Operators Cab The cab, like the other two reviews on the 3050 and 3650, is well detailed with all the levers and either orange or yellow, some with black tops and the seat is fitted with armrests like the other two models. The steering wheel has the John Deere badge in the centre which adds a nice touch to the interior with the beige trim in the cab. Again, fitting a driver into the cab could be a challenge, however, on all three tractors there is a screw underneath the main body, it may be a way in, but I decided not to tamper with it. Sturdy mirrors are fitted with a flashing beacon on the roof. Model Overveiw Like the other two John Deere tractors, these will be popular with the collectors and the younger generation. They are strong models, and on a model farm layout with machines behind them they would look impressive as a fleet. I think Britains are on with a winner with these earlier versions of the tractors. Thanks Steptoe!

  • 20. WWW.FARMMODELLERMAGAZINE.COM FARM MODELLER · ISSUE FOUR 19 6T Dumper JCB Britains Scale 1:32 Looking in the Box This is a sturdy looking dumper which will appeal to the JCB collector and the younger collector as a play toy. It comes in a sturdy box with a front clear plastic window. General Review The dumper has a good paint finish with clear decals fitted. The pivot steer has a reasonable lock from side to side but the model has no axle pivot. One ram lifts the tipping body to near vertical position. Also there is side to side adjustment on the dumper body. There are some details on the underside, axle detail and drive shafts etc. A towing eye is fitted to the rear of the dumper. Lights are fitted all around the dumper. Operators Cab There is quite a bit of detail inside the operators cab with foot pedals and gear lever plus some other bits and pieces to operate this machine. Good strong mirrors and a pair of flashing lights on the cab roof, amber and green. I understand the green light flashes if the operator is wear- ing a seat belt! I could not see a way into the cab to fit a driver. Model Overveiw In general, this is a strong model for this famous brand of machinery. Can be used as a toy or collectors item. The hobbyists collecting tractors and farm machinery will benefit from these cheaper models, they are both highly collectable and good to use as a play toy to keep the next genera- tion of younger carpet farmers buying and keeping he hobby alive. I wish Britains would make some of their models with cabs fitted to make it easy to fit drivers, They make the drivers so why not make them easy to fit? Thanks Steptoe!

  • 23. WWW.FARMMODELLERMAGAZINE.COM FARM MODELLER · ISSUE FOUR 22 Case IH International 1066 Britains Scale 1:32 Looking in the Box Well presented and the model was secured in the box, however, the exhaust pipe had broken off, which must have happned at the factory. Super glue came to the rescue! General Review This new range of classic tractors are looking very interesting from Britains ERTL, the Inter- national 1066 Turbo review model has a high gloss red and cream finish to all the paintwork, the rear mudguards and bonnet are red plastic. All the decals are clear and the IH badge stands proud, the tractor’s front grill is embossed and the black and silver are well detailed, the en- gine has a lot of detail too. The steering wheel steers the front axle with broad fat tyres fitted and they look the very good. A front weight is fitted with the IH emblem embossed onto ei- ther side. The rear wheels and tyres are well detailed and they are made of plastic. The hy- draulic lift arms are the standard Britains type so a lot of the early Britains would look good behind this tractor. Fitting a driver should not be an issue on this tractor providing there is room between the steering wheel and the well detailed seat. However I tried and neither the early or more recent Britains drivers would go straight on. The exhaust pipe has the water trap top fitted. Model Overveiw All in all a very sturdy looking classic tractor and will prove to be very popular with collec- tors, one will be going into my collection for sure as I like the idea of Britains bringing out the new classic collection, it brings back mem- ories from my tractor driving days. I am looking forward to the Fordson E27N and the JD 4020. I hope they produce more models of this era onto the market. It’s a pity about the non fitting drivers but if I put this tractor onto a diorama, I would find a figure that is stood, I have one on a sugar beet diorama with a mug of drink in his hand, stand him near the tractor for a lunch break, or put a seated figure on a box near the tractor wheel. I spent many days having my dinner sitting up on the wheel on a windy day, No cabs in the early 1960s. Thanks Steptoe!

  • 25. WWW.FARMMODELLERMAGAZINE.COM FARM MODELLER · ISSUE FOUR 25 Britains ERTL Case IH 4894 Prestige Scale 1:32 Looking in the Box The Case 4894 comes in a well presented box will plenty of support to keep the model secure within it. General Review This tractor reminds me of the earlier ERTL Case model from the 1980’s which I had. This tractor is a heavy model and like the earlier one it still looks good. It would make a great collectors item. Eight wheels gives this trac- tor the aggressive look and would look great on a diorama with a large piece of machin- ery towed behind. A nice red gloss finish and bright decals all around the tractor. The model has steering on both front and rear axles, the steering can be placed in crab steer or four wheel steer, the rear lift linkage is fitted with a towing hitch and the lift arms have holes in the ends to accept mounted equipment like a large plough but this would need to have the front of the plough stuited to accept the lift arms, a top link is fitted has well, also double assistor rams. There’s detail underneath with steering rams on both front and rear axles and a track rod on the front and rear axle too. The wheels have some detail and the tyres have good tread fitted. Operators Cab Fitting a driver into the cab may be a problem I could not find a way into it. There are screws underneath so you may find a way into the cab, the drivers seat looks like it has a seat belt moulded into it. Plenty of detail inside the cab with levers for different operation and de- cals fitted. Overveiw Of model Britain ERTL have made a fine job of revamp- ing this IH Case to make it a great collectors item, it’s strong enough for the younger car- pet farmer to put it through the paces and it would look good with a large cultivator towed behind just to give the carpet a good rake and possibly make some dust fly. Well done Brit- ains ERTL for the fine Prestige model of an early iconic prairie farm tractor. Thanks Steptoe!

  • 28. WWW.FARMMODELLERMAGAZINE.COM FARM MODELLER · ISSUE FOUR 28 New Holland T6175 Tractor & NCDump Trailer play set Looking in the Box Both the tractor and Dump trailer are stur- dy, well packed and ideal for the younger collector and carpet farmer. General Review The New Holland tractor has a good paint finish, all the decals are clear and bright, the tractor is the New Holland T6 175, all the road and work lights are picked out in silver and orange for the rear lights, the blue filler cap is in blue, this adds that extra bit of detail. The model has a good steering lock from side to side and the axle pivots for uneven ground. Front weights have been added. The rear linkage is the standard Britains, so mounted equipment is catered for. The dump trailer has a spring loaded drawbar. Large twin rams lift the dump box to a steep angle, this would be ideal on a sugar beet diorama tipping a load of beet onto a beet clamp at the end of a field. I think the rear door should pivot down, but the review model was stiff so I did not force the issue, all in all a good solid trailer with axles that pivot Operators Cab A great deal of detail has gone into the op- erators cab, the seat is blue and grey and they have added the New Holland emblem onto it, the rest of the cab interior is in grey with a passenger seat added. All controls including the computer screen are posi- tioned to the right of the driver as normal. The steering column also has levers on it for different functions. Drivers mirrors are well built, so will take a few knocks. Twin flashing beacons are mounted on the rear of the cab roof. Model Overveiw This outfit looks good and should sell well to both the younger collector and general farm machinery collector, as I said in the review cover, it would be great to have both items in mud and put onto a diorama with a beet harvester or just on its own, Take a picture of a beet heap on a head- land of a field and use it has a backdrop to a diorama. I fitted this to the new Britains IH Farmhall tractor and it’s an ideal piece of mounted equipment for any farm layout with livestock, the loaded mod- el with the two bales can easily drop off by a push button on the top of the main frame, which then releases a catch to drop off the bales. The review model has a high gloss paint finish in blue with clear decals of the company name Fleming on either side and main frame. Model Overveiw A must for any collector of farm equipment, will be an ideal model to use on a diorama livestock environment. Thanks Steptoe!

  • 34. WWW.FARMMODELLERMAGAZINE.COM FARM MODELLER · ISSUE FOUR 34 ERTL John Deere S780 Combine Harvester Scale 1:32 Out of the Box Light card box with a clear window to view the model. The model is placed into a polystyrene open box with another clear formed cover to retain it securely. General Comments This is a well detailed combine, for either the carpet farmer from the age of fourteen plus, or for the general model farm machinery collector. It is well built in diecast with plastic parts, the paint work has a good gloss finish to it and all the decals are clear, work and road lights are picked out in their different colours at the front and rear. However, the rear light clusters are a little flimsy, the grain tank is fixed open, with detailed steps into it, and the long reach grain auger clips into the open position. At the rear, a reasonably detailed straw chopper is attached, the engine bay detail is fine. The feed elevator has a pair of rams, this allows either the grain or maize header to be in a work or transport position. Operators Cab Steps up to the cab are in a light plastic. The cab has work lights all around the top, a pair of beacons on the cab roof and folding mirrors either side. Twin seats are fitted and the interior of the cab is detailed fairly well, I could not find a way into the cab to fit an operator Tracks & Wheels The detail on the tracks and the running gear both drive and the idler rollers are good. The track cleats are well detailed and the rear wheels steer but do no pivot from side to side. Headers The corn header is moulded in plastic throughout with a good gloss finish. A pair of rollers are there to assist the reels to turn, the reel tines do pivot which is a nice touch. The maize header folds, again all plastic but with more de- tail than the grain header, the feed auger revolves with two wheels on the underside. Another nice touch is the pto’s on either side and a couple of rams are fitted to fold the side header units up into the transport position. Steptoes Comments A good sturdy model of this iconic brand of machinery, for the collector and carpet farmer in mind. It would look good on a diorama either in a maize setting or grain. The open hopper could be filled with grain and to get around the op- erator he could be stood on the catwalk of the cab looking into the trailer stood at the side talking to the tractor driver. Thanks Steptoe!

  • 36. WWW.FARMMODELLERMAGAZINE.COM FARM MODELLER · ISSUE FOUR 36 Barry Burrell Building with Building with PART THREE PART THREE For modelling ploughed fields I use carpet tiles, for the 1:76 scale I use the tile straight out of the pack. Next, I will place the field into my scene. I’ll add a tractor and plough to make it look more realistic. I cut the tile about half way along the grain to the shape of the number of furrows on the plough, the idea is to make it look like it is working. The top picture shows SIKU 1:50th tractor and the plough working, Siku make a good range of farm equipment in 1:50th and 1:87th scale. The tile is then painted in a dark brown with white added to lighten it up. Next, I add a woodland scatter in earth colour and while the paint is still wet, I add PVA glue mixed with the paint. For larger scales I cut the tile in strips and glue at an angle, the picture shows a New Holland 1:50 scale Siku Tractor and plough. In both scales I add the work side to the furrow, cut another tile to suit, then add scatter in a different colour or different shades of static grass using PVA. For larger scales just cut bigger strips, I glue the tiles and strips with UHU glue. Picture above shows a Crawler trailed reversable plough, these were a common site in the 1970’s, mainly in Lincolnshire fen area. They were built in four or five furrows by a local Agricul- tural dealer. Next, a smaller project, adding extras to a Siku Grimme 150-60 1:32 scale potato harvester. This type of harvester wasn’t popular in the UK, they were very good in salad potatoes crops. I drove the demo machine when it first came to Grimme UK in 1999, the first Suffolk on salads. Then to Lincolnshire, and onto the Scottish borders in main crop potatoes, then back to Yorkshire. Picture no 4 shows the harvest- er working in Nr Damme, Northern Germany. While we were there it worked in very dry hot conditions. We also went to East Germany to see two four-row Grimme SF3000 self pro- pelled harvesters lifting potatoes. Customising a Grimme 150-60 Siku potato harvester 1:32 scale
  • 37. WWW.FARMMODELLERMAGAZINE.COM FARM MODELLER · ISSUE FOUR 37 The Siku model is reasonably good, I was able to get my hands on a second machine from the Grimme factory and it gave me a chance to add modifications to it and build a diorama. The modifications carried out included the operators cab, making it pivot, when driving the machine you can pivot the cab sideways to the right for better vison to the front digging area. The rear wheels I extended to a wider wheel base, I made a new deviner web, (A deviner web is a wide spaced web which allows crop to pass through leaving the potato tops to carry back over onto the ground). Also, I added an extra bunker end chute and anti roll flap in the bunker, a long flashing beacon on the cab roof, PTO drive shaft to the deviner web, repainted cab and interior, added mirrors, plus I added extra transfers with side stripes and added two people on the POB, (picking off band) and wheathering with crop thoughout. The crop of potatoes where bought through Hol- ly Loves Toys. Next on the Build list, a SF3000 Four Row Potato Har- vester, the picture shows the real version working in Norfolk in 2001. I decided to build this machine around the 1:50th scale, with the idea to use two Siku 1:50 scale tractors and two converted trailers on a diorama with another model of a Grimme DLS two row self propelled harvester of the same year. The front wheels came from a set of four row crop wheels from Holly Loves Toys, the Larger rear wheels were to be used on another project later on, the rest of the machine I built from scratch with plastrut. The chassis is made in box section using Powerbond 806 glue and pinned together. For the en- gine block I use 10mm foam board, then add the extra parts to build up the engine. I have found that power- bond glues this together very well, other glues I use are Humbrol and sometimes Gorilla glue with a brush in the bottle. Building a Grimme four row SF 3000 Self Propelled Harvester On the tracks, for glueing plastic to metal, Powerbond 806 is ideal. The part I had the most trouble building was the operators cab with it’s curved front window screen and tilted front panel. The roof I built up in layers of 1mm and 2mm plastic sheets bought from my local Railway model shop. For the screen I used 1mm clear plastic I had on stock, I made a card board template for all the clear area one piece to do both the sides and the front. I then marked it out with a thin marker pen and cut it to size. To add the curve, I used a piece of wood the width of the screen and cut and placed it in the centre part of the screen, then carefully held over a hot steaming Kettle us- ing thick gloves. After three tyres I managed to get two units made. The second screen i’m making will be for the Grimme DLS machine. Both these machines were built during the first Covid 19 lockdown, as well has several other models from the Grimme Stable. The picture opposite shows the Grimme DLS two row self propelled potato harvester. All parts except the wheels were scratch built. I made this machine at the same time as the SF3000, both machines are similar. I find while one model has glue drying, you can build parts for the other, this is the system I used with two other early Grimme harvesters which used the same chassis design. The pictures below shows the final build of the ASA-Lift carrot harvester I decided to build two machines at the same time but with different specifications
  • 38. WWW.FARMMODELLERMAGAZINE.COM FARM MODELLER · ISSUE FOUR 38 ASA build machines to lift many different types of vegetable crops, which include Carrots, Parsnips, Red beet, Oinions, Leeks and Cabbage etc. One of my model TRS’ will be painted in dark blue, the second machine will be in the new colour Grimme Red. All the different sub units are held in place with rods, this helps with painting each unit then when dry it can be all pinned together, The front web and main web use the same pin running though a bracket either side of the chassis then through the side panels on both the two web units. Then the crop elevator will another pin. Sand colour Humbrol I use for undercoat, then Humbrol red for top coat, One of the machines I have used Midnight Blue, both colour are a decent match to the real colours. Adding the crop, and soil to the machine, is to first painted all the webs with PVA neat glue, then add Woodland sce- nic soil coloured scatter, then add the carrots, For these I used orange coloured electric wire used on model railway OO gauge, all you need to do is cut into short lengths and scatter the pieces onto the main and second main webs, also onto the crop elevator for delivery into the trailer. You can also use this idea in the trailer using a false floor, to add false floors I use layers of foam board, build up to required level that suits your needs then paint the top layer, to the crop colour. By using a false floor less crop is used with the effect of a full trailer load. The Next Build A Model Of the 1965 Mobile Pea Viner A Model Of the 1965 Mobile Pea Viner The next new build is a Pea Viner I drove for a few years in the 1960’s. The season would last between six to seven weeks, with two operators on twelve hour shifts. Every weekend we would work eighteen hour shifts, from night shift to day shift. For a young lad of seventeen, the pay was good, I remember throughout the year 1970 I managed to take home £1,000, twenty quid a week, I worked long hours for this. These photos were taken on a Kodak 44A camera, so the pictures are not too clear, I still have the camera and it’s some sixty years old! I built the chassis first, this was made with a Plastruct 4.8mm box with inserts at either end, 3.2mm. All the parts were cut and pinned with 1.6mm coated wire, all parts glued using Powerbond glue. Scale is 1:32 approx. When this machine is finished and displayed, the tractor used on the diorama will be a MF 1080, It would have been nice if there was a MF175 in 1:32 scale, but I have not seen one, has anyone seen one? Next, the axels for the wheels are built using the same Plastruct box as the chassis, also the under conveyer, followed by the ends to hold the drum in position and centre beater bar. The pictures below show the final build of the ASA-Lift carrot harvester

Benjamin Tanari Benjamin Tanari Model Reviews Model Reviews Announced last year in the prototype phase at Nuremberg Toys Fair, Wiking released one of the first models of the Claas Xerion 5000 Track TS. The German manufacturer offers us the latest update from Claas of the Xerion 5000. This version is equipped with tracks instead of wheels but note that a wheeled version is planned. To begin with, the packaging is as usual, with a shiny white cardboard out- er box and polystyrene inner packaging. 2 beautiful photos of the machine are printed. The miniature itself is impressive in terms of size. Under the chassis, the transmission elements are well detailed. There are 2 3-point hitches, the same used on previous versions - unfortunately they are still fixed with awful rivets which could receive a touch of paint to em- bellish the model.
  • 40. WWW.FARMMODELLERMAGAZINE.COM FARM MODELLER · ISSUE FOUR 40 The independently steered axles are fitted with Zuidberg stamped tracks (the Dutch manufactur- er of transmission components). The elements in question are very well finished, the tracks are well proportioned. The undercarriage raises the tractor higher with tracks than when fitted with wheels, therefore, the ground clearance seems a little high to me. I have no examples to compare (525 mm on the track version at scale 1:1) the miniature scales up at 730 mm which is quite substantial. Moving to the cabin, this is fixed as per the real one and is the latest generation. All the instru- ments are there, such as the Cmotion controller and the CEBIS screen. The cabin is equipped with an opening door and a few accessories to complete the finishing touches such as the presence of a fire extinguisher at the rear, a few hoses and numerous headlights around the front.
  • 41. WWW.FARMMODELLERMAGAZINE.COM FARM MODELLER · ISSUE FOUR 41 The front of the model is imposing like the real one, but the big downside is the absence of a hinge for opening the bonnet, which leaves one looking through this semblance of a grill which is no longer there, instead, there is a thin piece of transparent black plastic cov- ering the MTU 530 CV engine block (Wiking have done far better at modelling grills in the past). At the rear of the tractor, we find the platform which can receive trailed equipment thanks to the ‘5th wheel’ coupling, there are also hydraulic elements to connect them to the tractor. The platform can receive equipment specifically dedicated to Xerion.

His mother Ashley and his father Ian are sixth gen- eration farmers on the land nestling at the foot of Scrabo Tower near Newtownards. Their farm overlooks the famous beauty spot of Strangford Lough, County Down. He received his farmyard diorama from Santa about four years ago and recently he was given a very detailed farmhouse as a birthday present. George especially likes the “Old School” tractors, the Britains David Brown 996, the Britains Ford TW35 and the Britains Ford TW 10, these are his favourites. George has called his farmyard the Blackmountain Farm, and he adds more detail every day. His first tractor was a Bruder Massey Ferguson and he now has a big collection of mostly Britains tractors and implements. His mother and father have told him he will be allowed the more delicate models when he is older. In the meantime he would love to have either a John Deere 6710 Forager or a John Deere 7810 tractor. As his diorama gets ever bigger he’s hoping his father buys him a shed to house his collection and his mother can have her living room back!
  • 45. WWW.FARMMODELLERMAGAZINE.COM FARM MODELLER · ISSUE FOUR 45 Announced before its big sister, the 8900 TT, here we present the 6900 TT after a few months of delay. The model of the 6000 series, which is part of the straw walker machines and whose main structure is identical to the 8000 series, is based on a 6-walker machine. There are some differences, but these are really subtle. The rear most upper housing which hides the air filter is no longer present, the rear beacon is not positioned in the same way, but the big difference comes from the Vario 930 header which we will talk about later. The Claas box is more compact than for the 8000 models, the front face is printed with a photo of the machine, the inner packaging is a polystyrene box. First under the chassis, as on the previous model nothing exceptional, a plastic moulding representing the structure of the machine and various components such as the box rods, the feet of grain tank, auger, elevators and the fuel filler. • 46. WWW.FARMMODELLERMAGAZINE.COM FARM MODELLER · ISSUE FOUR 46 The Terra Trac undercarriage is identical to the 8000, perfectly represented, the tracks turned and the under- carriage oscillates. Another version of track would have been welcome. Regarding the rear axle, the latter steers slightly oscillate the pendulum and moulded rod system, and finally, 2 small springs at the bottom for suspension. The cabin is identical, we find the latest generation with the field scanner integrated into the roof. All the finish- es are there; the guardrails are very thin; we find various working and main lights everywhere on the front fascia and the interior of the cab is fitted with all the equipment necessary for operating the machine (C MOTION and CBIS control). The catwalk of the 6900, equipped with a removable ladder, is identical to its big sister. Regarding the exterior of the model, one downside is that the covers do not open of course, as per the other mod- els. Different parts of the machine are visible such as the engine outlet (heart of all the drives) and the DPF and the exhaust outlet. The MAN D26 507hp engine is not visible because of the closed hood. Dynamic cooling is also very well reproduced thanks to the photo-etched grid which gives it a lot of realism. The air treatment system is visible with the filter housing which is extended by a large tube which runs along the radiator and engine.
  • 47. WWW.FARMMODELLERMAGAZINE.COM FARM MODELLER · ISSUE FOUR 47 The 13,500 litre grain tank is an option on the real one, (identical to 8800 in reality), the latter is finely reproduced and manually functional, there’s no impact on folding because the tarpaulins are very flexible. The panels are articulated by means of small, well-hidden hinges. The interior of the grain tank gives access to a ladder to go down inside and there is an auger mounted on a spring, which allows this to lift by itself when opening. Auger model 5 XL is represented, the same as its big sister, the latter is also available as an option on the 6900 because it can take a header of 10.80 m. Note that the augers are offered according to the cutting widths. In our case, we would have liked a 4 XL example which would have been more logical and brought a little more difference to the 8000. Let’s go back to the front to look at the chain or belt conveyor of your choosing, which is the same as other models. We will recognize the vacuum system and it is very well-done, vacu- uming dust with its imposing elbow and side ejection. Finally, at the back we find the straw chopper, with large tubing to protect the rear of the machine. The 930 Vario header measures 303 mm in overall width. The reels are movable, up, down and forward, they are equipped with small teeth. The frame of the latter remains simple and the drive gimbal is not really the best finished, you have to be content with a piece of flexible plastic that dangles which I think is quite average in terms of quality for a brand like Marge Models. Concerning the header trolley, we have the basic model with drawbar as it is for the 8000, but shorter. The header is held correctly thanks to small lug which maintains it on the central beam. Marge Models has succeeded in its aim in terms of mould use, but knowing that there is a slight difference in size at 1/1, which represents only a few mm at 1/32 we would have hoped to see more differences. After having analysed the exposed parts of the hoods and some interior parts of the latter, I can tell you that the differences are miniscule. So, a note to the purist of the brand, the 6000 range, will be completed by 3 other models 6800 TT, 6900 and 6800 with wheels.

  • 56. WWW.FARMMODELLERMAGAZINE.COM FARM MODELLER · ISSUE FOUR 56 VALTRA G135 Unlimited Orange Metallic UH6292 Universal Hobbies Scale 1:32 Out Of The Box First impressions, taking the model out of the box, it’s a very well packed tractor and the detail is fantastic. General Review The detail on this Valtra is out of this world, from front to back with its burnt orange colour scheme and matt black mudguards, the detailed front linkage complete with twin assistor rams and top link. The steering on the review model was limited, a V logo on the front is in chrome with chrome around the headlights, the front axle pivots, the Valtra logo on the bonnet sides are also embossed. Looking at all the work lights around the tractor they have the look of LED’s, even the indicators, this model has been well thought out. Most of the engine detail is covered with the bonnet, but all modern tractors are the same, The steps into the cab are a little flimsy so care is needed when handling the tractor. Rear linkage is very well detailed complete with top link. All the wheels and tyres are well moulded too. Drivers Cab I could not find a way into the cab to fit a driver, however, I would say this Valtra will be placed in a collectors glass cabinet for safe keeping. There’s ample detail in the cab with all the controls that you would find in this modern tractor. Including foot pedals, computer screen etc. Mirrors fold down the sides of the cab and the sun roof will let extra light into this workplace. Twin flashing lights and radio arial will need handling with care. Steptoes Comments A brilliant Valtra model, compliments to the design team at Universal Hobbies. I understand the Valtra G 135 will be available in different colours. The Orange Valtra will be limited to 1000 pieces. There are also three more colours available for the Valtra G135 Tractor, have a look on the next page! Thanks Steptoe!

The box is made of good quality card with a stiffer card around the plastic base holding the model. General Review A good sturdy well put together model with a lot of detail from top to bottom, the paint fin- ish has high gloss to it, the decals all around the bonnet are clear and bright, the trac- tor castings are very good with a lot of de- tail around the front with underslung weight block, the engine again has great detail on both sides. Looking underneath the tractor, the detail on the front and rear axles is superb with drive shafts and final drives all very well cast and there is some pivot on the front axle, the wheel castings with the PAVT rims have great detail and the tyres are well moulded. The rear linkage is the type that will accept lift equipment. One thing that is missing are front lights. Operators Cab I could not see a way in to the cab, however, there are small screws either side of the cab under the mudguards, this may be a way in to the cab to fit a driver. There’s detail in the cab, but what you have to remember is when this tractor was made, the controls for the driver were not like they are today, so I feel the control and dials are ideal. There are foot pedals for brake and clutch and hydraulic le- vers. Mirrors are fitted either side of the cab, and work lights on the rear, steps are fitted to both sides for entry into the cab. Steptoes Comments This model is a credit to the Universal Hob- bies team, With a limited edition of 1000 piec- es this tractor model will soon sell out. A must for Ford collectors and collectors of all types of model tractors. This tractor fitted to a early Dowdswell plough model (which were made several years ago) would look great on a di- orama. Tt has pleased collectors of the diamond brand. Overall, the miniature is well proportioned and many details are present. Under the chassis there is nothing inparticular in terms of detail, on the other hand the steering front axle shows the rod system which pushes the steering rod is removable. The imposing one-piece hood lifts to give us access to the 3-cylinder unit MWM D325-3 of 46 HP. Various components such as the intake pipes and oil and diesel filters are well represented as is the exhaust with exit below. The driving position is well reproduced with a seat with mechanical sus- pension and the lift control is very well represented, the dashboard is also well detailed. The rear of the tractor is not bad either, there is a 3-point hitch, the handles on the arms are well represented, a tool bar and a top link are included with the tractor. Overall we have a nice little model, despite the presence of some rivets but it will find its place on different diorama stages.

  • 65. WWW.FARMMODELLERMAGAZINE.COM FARM MODELLER · ISSUE FOUR Hercules 160 Resin Tractor Schuco Scale 1:32 Out Of The Box Light card box with the model in a second box of polystyrene, the tractor is held in the box with two screws on a plastic type plinth. The feft hand side mirror had come off but that’s an easy fix. General Comments Another resin model to review by Schuco, the Same Hercules 160 tractor in 1:32 scale. The satin paint finish is on the dull side, however, this light model has good detail- ing around the front grille, the head lights are inset with a clear cover over them. The bonnet has bright decals fitted and there are seethrough grooves down the bonnet on both sides which shows the engine, this is a nice touch. Why an all resin model I ask myself? They are lighter than diecast, but not as strong in other areas, both the resin models that I have reviewed recently have had bits either broken or fall off. I think more detail can be put into certain parts of a model with resin, for example, the grooves in tractor bonnets or where the model needs strength like the basic chassis. It needs to be diecast, or a stronger material than resin. Operators Cab Looking through the cab windows the driv- ers seat looks a bit on the large side. The is no opening to put a driver into the cab, the Dash board is well detailed with dials etc, Hydraulic Linkages The detail on the rear linkage is ok, but there is no movement. Wheels & Tyres Detailing on the wheel rims is quite good and tyres are reasonably well detailed. Steptoes Comments Collectors of this famous brand of tractor will add it to there collection, but this may depend on the price. It will be a model that will need a lot of care when handling and best kept in a cabinet. Thanks Steptoe! 64

  • 68. WWW.FARMMODELLERMAGAZINE.COM FARM MODELLER · ISSUE FOUR FE 35 (1956 ) Ferguson Out Of The Box The Ferguson 35 comes in a light well dis- played card box with model enclosed in a second box made of polystyrene to keep the model secure, removing it from the box for the review is easy with no screws to take out. I’m impressed with the way Universal Hobbies have packed this model for the end customer. However, the engine oil filter was not glued and in the box loose, no big deal, just a dab of glue would cure this. And the right side mudguard is a little loose. General Comments I remember when the real version came onto the market place, with the grey and gold paintwork. Several local smallholders were some of the first customers to buy this new tractor. This tractor would possibly be a follow on from a Ferguson TE 20, their only tractor. The model Paintwork has a good gloss finish in both colours. With 1:16 you get a lot of detail and Universal Hobbies deserve credit for the detail from front to back with the amount that is shown. Even the small toolbox on the left side opens. The bonnet opens to reveal the engine in great detail, pity about the oil filter, it did slip back into its mounting easily but needs a spot of glue. All the operators controls are where they should be, even the gear levers have socks at there bases. The hydraulic lift controls are on the right of the drivers seat. Hydraulic Rear Lift The hydraulic is again well detailed right down to the hook, checked that the chains are in place but there’s no top link fitted. A hydraulic trailer pipe connection is on the left side of the seat. Clutch and brake pedals are well detailed down to the catch to lock the brake pedals together for road use. Wheels & Tyres All wheels are detailed well and tyres are well moulded. Comments A well presented model of this iconic Ferguson tractor, no points are deducted for the two items not secured on the model so 10/10 to the Universal Hobbies team for such a true-to-life scale model. • 70. WWW.FARMMODELLERMAGAZINE.COM FARM MODELLER · ISSUE FOUR 8737 Tractor Massey Ferguson - Scale 1:32 Out Of The Box The model is well secured within the second part of the box, the outside case is fairly strong has well. The one I have for review, I think, is a dealer box. The only thing I don’t like are the wires that hold the tractor within the box should be plastic. General Appearance The front weight block is packed separate and is easy fitted to the front linkage, movement up and down is good and there’s also a moveable top link. A fairly heavy tractor with a very good paint finish in red and satin black on the front and rear mud- guards’ outer edges. The bonnet is well moulded with good clear decals on the sides and front with the MF badge. All the lights are well moulded with a touch of silver paint, I also noticed two small yellow dots on the front left corner, these look like a pair of external spool valves for front mounted equipment. The side light clusters on the cab front need to be treated with care but are well detailed, the side mouldings on the offside of the cab have good detail and the left side fuel tanks with a blue cap. All these little touches add that little bit extra to make a fine model. Rear lights are well detailed. Operators Cab The operators cab is fitted with twin mirrors which are fixed, could not find a way in to the cab to fit an operator. There are three pedals on the cab floor and the interior is very well detailed with all the dif- ferent control levers on the side console and around the steering wheel. The main seat is coloured in light blue with the MF logo on the backrest, a small extra seat is also fitted. Flashing beacons are also fitted to the cab roof. Window wipers are on both front and back windows. Top cab lights are fitted to the front and rear of the cab roof. Rear Linkage The rear lift arms will raise up and down and will lock, they look like they would accept lift machinery available on the market. The top link is moulded into position, which is a bit strange as the front top link is adjustable. Why not do the rear one the same? A towing hook is fitted so that trailed machines are catered for. A selection of spool valves are detailed in to this moulding at the rear Wheels & Tyres The front axel pivots but there’s no lock from side to side on the review model. Reasonable detail on the wheels and tyres. General Comments A model well worth buying for any collectors cabi- net, or for display on a diorama. Mine will go onto a diorama with a trailer in tow loaded with spuds. Thanks Steptoe! 69

I notice two small issues, one of the screws holding the front track rod had come out, but I screwed it back in, the second issue was that the check chain on the rear linkage had come adrift. General Comments This model is the most detailed model I had the pleasure of reviewing, wherever you look, the scale of the detail is stunning. The blue paint work has a good gloss finish to it. At the front, the detail is great on the starting handle with the wire retaining clip to hold it in position when not in use, the embossed radiator with the Fordson logos on the front and down the sides, the two headlights have even got the electric wires to them. The engine detail is a work of art, with the throttle rod and choke rods in position. PTO belt pulley with the lever to engage it just like the real tractor! Electric cables connect to the starter motor. The exhaust has been touched up at the bottom with brown paint to look like the paint has been burnt off, there is so much detail to mention! Driver controls are all there with foot brake pedals and clutch pedal. The battery box is mounted at the back of the bonnet with a console and a few dials. A large toolbox is situated on the left side of the engine. Hydraulic Linkage Everything in this area is detailed to a high standard with check chains on the arms and an extra chain from one arm to the other, one side of this had come loose. The swinging drawbar has the pin through it. There is a foot plate below the top link mounting but no top link is present. Wheels & Tyres All the wheels are well detailed and tyres well moulded like the rest of this model. Steptoes Comments There’s only one word to describe this true replica of the iconic Fordson E27N, Brilliant. 10/10 top marks Universal Hobbies, this is a must for all you collectors “A short story about a E27N that collected potatoes from the farm I worked on 55 years ago. They were collected for stock feed that had been bagged up in the field, the tractor was fitted with a Perkins P6 engine, the operator, a chap in his late twentys, would bring a spare trailer to be loaded by the gang picking the crop. On his return with a second trailer, he would drop it half way down the field then would do his party piece: he would go full throttle in top gear down the field, then brakes full on with the tractor sliding in the loose soil, engage reverse gear and clutch out with the tractor still going forward while the rear wheels were going backwards. This he would do many times through the season. And never a repair bill, these tractors were bullet proof.” Thanks Steptoe! 71

WWW.FARMMODELLERMAGAZINE.COM FARM MODELLER · ISSUE FOUR Universal Hobbies Ford 7000 Tractor - Scale 1:16 Out Of The Box This model arrived in a light card box with model held in a second polystyrene container, this gives extra support for this large model (pet hate!), the wire that holds tractor in the polystyrene box passes though plastic holders and then twists underneath. For review purposes you have to retain the wire to put back again once reviewed and pictures are taken. General Comments Once again, a well detailed model from Universal Hobbies. The paintwork has a good gloss finish to it in both the blue and off white colours. All the decals are clear, the front Ford badge stands proud on the mesh grill. Front headlights are recessed into the front it looks great. A large set of front weights are fixed to the front frame and are well cast. The engine has a lot of detail, which is normal for Universal Hobbies on this size of scale, the exhaust is detachable and the air cleaner has a nice glass pre cleaner unit at the top. The left side bonnet lifts to reveal more engine detail. Operators Cab The cab steps, side lights and mirrors on each side of the cab are flimsy so care is needed when handling this model. There are big indi- cators on each of the mudguards and a good size ploughing light is fitted. Cab interior is well detailed but I couldn’t find a way into the cab, however, for a model this size and quality I don’t think it will be put onto a muddy diorama, this will be a model for the serious Ford collector and live in a glass cabinet. Another nice touch is around the windows, the rubber which holds the windows in is well shown in the moulding of the main cab panels. Rear Linkage The rear of the tractor back end is well detailed, showing the pto screw on cap, swinging draw- bar, lift arms with check chains and the left side an assistor am. No top link is supplied on this model. Wheels & Tyres Front and rear wheels and tyres are moulded with good detail, the rear wheel weights look the part. Steptoes Comments on the review .
