1.0 Profession and occupation (30 marks)
a) It has been suggested that a profession may be distinguished from an occupation. Elaborate on the
key differences after researching into this area.
b) Is quantity surveying, construction management and contracting considered professions? Explain and
justify your views for each.
2.0 RICS Code of Ethics (Pass/ Not achieved)
All professions have a code of ethics. Read the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) code of
ethics and professional standards.

a) Enroll on the RICS ‘Ethics Walkthrough’ online continuing professional
development (CPD) course. Take notes while reading and listening to every part of
the online course and complete the online test. Once you have successfully
completed the online course and test, generate and save the RICS ‘Ethical
Standards Walkthrough’ CPD certificate as a pdf file. The certificate must have your name and be
dated in 2018.
The RICS CPD certificate must be attached to this assignment as evidence of having enrolled and
successfully completed the online course. This is a compulsory and absolute requirement of this
assignment. If a valid and compliant RICS CPD certificate is not attached, you will be
considered to have failed this assignment.

website. This online course should take between one and two hours to complete. It is not difficult if you
pay attention when reading and listening to the course online.

3.0 BQSM Code of Ethics (60 marks)
Access and read the Board of Quantity Surveyors Malaysia (BQSM) Code of Conduct under the new
Quantity Surveyors (Amendment) Rules 2016.
You can access it from the BQSM website, under Download, Guidelines, Guideline Act Com, Quantity

a) Critically review and prepare a commentary on ten provisions you consider to be important under the
Quantity Surveyors (Amendment) Rules 2016, Part IV Code of Professional Conduct. Include
examples to illustrate your commentary.
b) Access and read the BQSM Conditions of Engagement under Part IV Code of
Professional Conduct. Explain and elaborate on the professional duty of care and
standard expected of quantity surveyors.
4.0 Presentation of assignment
The assignment is to be submitted in a report format and as such should have a formal structure and
layout. It should be presented as a neatly bound professional document single sided.
Length: should not exceed 3000 words for the task.
Requirements: Present this assignment as a report titled: Professional Ethics
Divide your report into parts or sections using the THREE main headings 1 – 3 above, with appropriate
subheadings. The cover page of your report must include your group students’ name, the title of this
assignment, the month and year, and the module name and number (Professional Practice 1 (QSB
60604)).
All submissions shall have a bibliography of references and sources used in the preparation of the
project. APA style of referencing should be used.
Group reports must include the “Peer Review” from each member and collected by the team lead and
put into a sealed envelope, a description of the specific contributions of the various members of the
assignment group and an assessment of the percentage contribution of each member.

If any student disagrees with their colleagues on the percentage allocation they have been given, they
may attach to the appendix of the group report, their argument as to why they should receive a different
allocation. Where the allocations are equal, all students in the group will be awarded the total mark
assessed for the report. Students who make a less-than-equal contribution will be awarded a lower
mark (as judged by the lecturer on the basis of the students’ comments; for example, students who
make half the contribution of their colleagues will receive half the total mark for the report).
Work must be submitted through Turnitin and a hard copy to the lecturer together with the
assignment.
Turnitin will be used to check the originality of the report. Similarity Index is 35% maximum.
5.0 Late Submissions
The School imposes a late submission penalty for work submitted late without a valid reason e.g. a
medical certificate. Any work submitted after the deadline (which may have been extended) shall have
the percentage grade assigned to the work on face value reduced by 10% for the first day and 5% for
each subsequent day late. A weekend counts as one (1) day.
Individual members of staff shall be permitted to grant extensions for assessed work that they have set
if they are satisfied that a student has given good reasons.
Non submission will result in zero mark for this assignment.The Board of Examiners may overrule any
penalty imposed and allow the actual mark achieved to be used if the late submission was for a good
reason.
6.0 Deadline
You must submit this assignment 1 in MS Word or PDF not later than 12.00 pm, Tuesday 26 June
2018.
